Book Review - What Works: Common Sense Solutions for a Stronger America
About the Book
New book from America’s #1 syndicated columnist, much in the same vein as the highly successful America the Beautiful by Ben Carson.
Thomas probes and provides answers to questions like, why must we constantly refight the same battles over and over? Why don’t we consult the past and use common sense in order to see that what others discovered long before we were born can still works today? Our politics and even our spiritual lives too often resemble the film “Groundhog Day” in which actor Bill Murray wakes up and repeats the same event again and again with the same results. Think present-day Washington.
We KNOW what works—historically and instinctively—but politics too often gets in the way, as does ignorance. Too few people pay attention and the politicians easily pick their pockets—literally and intellectually. That’s why Congress has an approval rating lower than cockroaches and colonoscopies and only slightly above pedophiles.
What Works is about solutions, not theories. It’s about pressuring political leadership to forget about the next election and start focusing on the needs of the people who work hard, and send increasing amounts of their tax dollars to Washington, and long to see the country achieve something of value … like it has always done.
My Take on the Book
This book takes on a whole new approach to looking at why things continually happen over and over again in Washington. While I did not agree with Thomas' opinions on many aspects, it still was interesting looking at how he analyzed things and looked at America. The book is pointed and blunt and you see why people like his writing as he hold nothing back. He uses humor as well as logic to bring you full circle to the ideas that he is trying to address and share. He is clear and puts forth a conservative view of America, but also disagrees with some of the Republican Party platform too. If you are more of a liberal like me, you will probably not appreciate all of the arguments, but you will gain a better perspective on the conservative ideas that are pervasive in America today.
