Holiday Gift Guide - SOL Republic Deck

SOL Republic Deck
 photo disclaimer2_zps8af35ac1.jpg

About the Speaker
The SOL REPUBLIC x Motorola DECK is the only wireless speaker featuring Super-Power Wireless Range and Heist Mode™, allowing up to 5 friends to pair at once and take turns controlling the music.

Product Features

  • Powered by large R2 Sound Engines and a bass port for bigger sound
  • NFC or Bluetooth pairing
  • Speakerphone for hands free calling
  • Acoustically transparent slim-fit case lets you listen to the DECK while you protect it
  • Charges via mini USB cable

My Take on the Speaker
With a bit over four hours of volume I was impressed with the length of usability on this speaker. On top of this the sound quality was solid. I loved the portability of the speaker itself, and you can easily take it with you no matter where you are going or where you may need some amplification. One of the fun things with this speaker was the fact that five people can hook into it at once and using Heist mode you can steal each others' music and share it back and forth. This was a bit of a novel concept for me, but I have to say that it made a lot of sense to me and I am surprised to not see more doing this. The setup for this was easy and only took a few minutes. Just this past weekend we had a get-together which was not in an area of the house where music was able to be heard and this product definitely saved the evening. All-in-all for the price and for the additional add-ons this is definitely something that I would place on any of my friends' christmas want lists and I think you will want to as well!

My Take on the Movie
My family are HUGE Disney movie fans. Whether they are cartoons or regular movies we are there. I have been a bit skeptical on some of the sequels in the past as some were not to the same caliber of writing or animation it seemed to me. However in saying this I have to relate that this was not the cast with these films. My girls loved both of these films. One of the things that I appreciated was having two films in one. This means less space and easier transport-ability in the long run as well. The movies had some great new songs and I appreciated that they used similar actors so that the voices would remain in tact for the characters that you know and love. There are also some great messages that parents want to share with their children in these movies that range from messages of friendship and dedication, to those of self-exploration and trusting in others as well as many others. All-in-all, this was a great Blu-ray and one that I would highly recommend to others!

My Take on the DVD
My kids love this series! Whether it is because that love animals, are pet owners themselves, or they just love the idea of being able to talk to animals, I don't know, but they are hooked. This series is well made and cover many issues that at least my oldest is starting to deal with. Some of the issues discussed may be a bit too advanced for younger viewers, but the cartoon itself and the characters within will draw the viewer in even further. This is a fun series for the whole family!

Book Review - Understanding World Religions: A Bible-Based Review of 50 Faiths

Understanding World Religions: A Bible-Based Review of 50 Faiths
 photo disclaimer2_zps8af35ac1.jpg

About the Book
Confused by the varying religious viewpoints in your workplace, neighborhood, even your family? Understanding World Religions—contrasting 50 world faiths with Christianity—can help. Christians believe Jesus’ claim to be “the way and the truth and the life” (John 14:6), though dozens of other religions propose varying pathways to God, heaven, or personal fulfillment. Describing these alternate viewpoints fairly and non-judgmentally, Understanding World Religions features major world faiths (Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism), Christian-based religions (Mormonism, Unification Church, Christian Science), traditional religions (African, Chinese, Native American), and various hard-to-categorize beliefs (Gnosticism, Hare Krishna, New Age Spirituality, Wicca). This fully-illustrated guide is a fascinating and useful tool to help you understand others’ beliefs.

My Take on the Book
This was a very complete book! Each of the fifty faiths are examined fully and you get to leave reading this with a much better understanding of not only the history of each of them but also the basic tenets of each too. I found this book to be very interesting and left with a much greater understanding of these faiths. I was impressed with how vast this was too as their were faiths that I had never heard of held within the book!

About the Book
The Scare Games are the biggest event of the year at Monsters University. Mike and the other Oozma Kappas need to win, or Mike and Sulley will get expelled. Read their story in the e-book, or help Mike and Sulley train for the Scare Games in nine learning games.

Product Features

  • Nine games teach letters, math, memory and more
  • E-book tells the "Monsters University" movie story
  • Take and decorate photos with Monsters U stickers and frames (compatible with any InnoTab system with a camera)
  • Works with all InnoTab systems

My Take on the Book
What I loved about this game was that it followed the movie quite well and provided some great learning games that for my daughter who is in kindergarten was perfect. The games were intuitive and allowed her to practice both things that she knew already but also challenged her too. All of this was supported by characters from the Monsters University movie which she loved too. I think the Scared Card Club is still probably her favorite, but I have to say that for me, mine was probably the Toxicity challenge. All of the games within were fun and engaging and provided great learning that can be taken on the go! All-in-all this was a great game for my daughter and seeing how much she has learned already, I will definitely be looking at future Innotab learning games in the future to support her education and I highly encourage you to do the same for your own child!

Book Review - Grimmtastic Girls: Cinderella Stays Late

Grimmtastic Girls: Cinderella Stays Late
 photo disclaimer2_zps8af35ac1.jpg

About the Book
The authors of the hit Goddess Girls series put a fun and girly twist on another super-popular theme: fairy tales!

Once upon a time, in faraway Grimmlandia...

A Grimmtastic girl named Cinderella is starting her first week at Grimm Academy on the wrong foot. Cinda's totally evil stepsisters are out to make her life miserable. The Steps tease Cinda, give her terrible advice about life at the academy, and even make her look bad in front of her new friends, Red, Snow, and Rapunzel! But when Cinda overhears the Steps plotting a villainous deed that could ruin Prince Awesome's ball, Cinda, her new friends, and a pair of magical glass slippers have to stop them--before the last stroke of midnight!

My Take on the Book
This is a great new way to experience the Cinderella fairy tale. The author has updated the tale and brought it into more relevant terms to today's youth while still maintaining the story itself. The author has also developed some great characters within this story that you will love to love and hate. What was also nice about the story was how it weaved in other characters from other fairy tales, as it showed the interconnections of all of the fairy tale characters themselves. All-in-all this was a fun book that my daughter enjoyed. By the end she was asking for another book in the series - what more can a dad ask for than that!

 photo disclaimer2_zps8af35ac1.jpg

About the Book
The infamous, Most Wanted Goosebumps characters are out on the loose and they're coming after you! Catch them all, undead or alive!

It doesn't take long for Tommy to find out he's in big trouble. His whole family is obsessed with winning and he's being sent off to a special camp to help make him into a "winner." When Tommy gets there, he sees that something isn't right. All of the kids are so competetive. It's almost like their lives depend on it. Can Tommy survive The Final Exam?

My Take on the Book
Get ready to get a bit scared or as my daughter says, freaked out, when you read this. This is Goosebumps at its best and through the plot and the characters you will be kept on the edge of your seat wondering what will come next and whether Tommy will make it out of the story alive. I am not giving anything away here, but will say that they story itself was a lot of fun and sometimes a bit over the top, but my nine year old loved it, and so will your own child (and maybe even you too!).

Book Review - I Am Walt Disney

I Am Walt Disney
 photo disclaimer2_zps8af35ac1.jpg

About the Book
I am the creator of Mickey Mouse. I am Walt Disney.

As a child, I had a wild imagination and a great curiosity. As I grew up, I used those qualities to become a cartoonist. Eventually, I turned these drawings into films and began my own animation business. One of my characters, Mickey Mouse, became so popular that movie theaters sold out and I won an Academy Award. After pursuing a career as a film producer, director, screenwriter, voice actor, entrepreneur and entertainer, I added developer to my resume when I created Disneyland amusement park. I became tremendously successful and beloved by children of all ages because of my belief that even the impossible is possible. I am Walt Disney.

To this day, Walt Disney's characters remain some of the most recognizable images in the world. With books, TV shows, films, and amusement parks devoted to his creations, the Walt Disney name lives on. Learn all about this remarkable man's fascinating life in Scholastic's biography series, I AM.

My Take on the Book
My family are HUGE Walt Disney fans. I am not just saying Walt Disney Movies or theme parks, but fans of the man himself and the vision that he created that lives on today. This was instilled in me by my mother and I have shared it on with my own kids. This book opens Walt Disney, the man, to the younger reader and what I loved about it was that it shared his whole life with the reader from beginning to end and has a ton of details in it that even I did not know. The book was a great, and easy read and my eldest daughter and I read it together (which was a ton of fun). We are going back down to Orlando to visit the parks in 2014, and I now feel that my daughter has a much better appreciation for the man who started it all because of this book!

Book Review - I Survived the Nazi Invasion, 1944

I Survived the Nazi Invasion, 1944
 photo disclaimer2_zps8af35ac1.jpg

About the Book
In one of the darkest periods in history, one boy struggles to survive...

In this gripping new addition to the bestselling I SURVIVED series, a young Jewish boy escapes the ghetto and finds a group of resistance fighters in the forests of Poland. Does he have what it takes to survive the Nazis -- and fight back?

My Take on the Book
This book really makes the Nazi invasion come alive for the reader. Through sharing historical facts through fictional characters the reader gets drawn into the invasion and begins to understand what it was like then. My daughter and I had a long conversation about World War and what happened during this time after she read this and I know she came out shocked at what could happen in the world around her. This was well written and you get lost in the story. It also was a compelling read and my daughter was finished so quickly... which is always a great sign!

My Take on the Book

Book Review - Titanic: Voices from the Disaster

Titanic: Voices from the Disaster
About the Book
Critically acclaimed nonfiction author Deborah Hopkinson pieces together the story of the TITANIC and that fateful April night, drawing on the voices of survivors and archival photographs.

Scheduled to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the tragic sinking of the TITANIC, a topic that continues to haunt and thrill readers to this day, this book by critically acclaimed author Deborah Hopkinson weaves together the voices and stories of real TITANIC survivors and witnesses to the disaster -- from the stewardess Violet Jessop to Captain Arthur Rostron of the CARPATHIA, who came to the rescue of the sinking ship. Packed with heartstopping action, devastating drama, fascinating historical details, loads of archival photographs on almost every page, and quotes from primary sources, this gripping story, which follows the TITANIC and its passengers from the ship's celebrated launch at Belfast to her cataclysmic icy end, is sure to thrill and move readers.

My Take on the Book
I have always been intrigued by the Titanic disaster. From the movies and books that have been written, I find it interesting to find out more about the ship, its crew and the passengers upon the boat. This book goes so much deeper than many of the books and does bring in the voices of the people from the boat itself. The book is full of great facts and figures and any person that is either new to learning about the disaster or even soneone like me who really enjoys reading about it, you will come to find that this book is a must read!

Book Review - Wheels Stop: The Tragedies and Triumphs of the Space Shuttle Program, 1986-2011

Wheels Stop: The Tragedies and Triumphs of the Space Shuttle Program, 1986-2011
 photo disclaimer2_zps8af35ac1.jpg

About the Book
Humanity’s first reusable spacecraft and the most complex machine ever built, NASA’s Space Shuttle debuted with great promise and as a dependable source of wonder and national pride. But with the Challenger catastrophe in 1986, the whole Space Shuttle program came into question, as did NASA itself, so long an institution that was seemingly above reproach. Wheels Stop tells the stirring story of how, after the Challenger disaster, the Space Shuttle not only recovered but went on to perform its greatest missions. From the Return to Flight mission of STS-26 in 1988 to the last shuttle mission ever on STS-135 in 2011, Wheels Stop takes readers behind the scenes as the shuttle’s crews begin to mend Cold War tensions with the former Soviet Union, conduct vital research, deploy satellites, repair the Hubble Space Telescope, and assist in constructing the International Space Station. It also tells the heart-wrenching story of the Columbia tragedy and the loss of the magnificent STS-107 crew.

As complex as the shuttle was, the people it carried into orbit were often more so—and this is their story, too. Close encounters with astronauts, flight controllers, and shuttle workers capture the human side of the Space Shuttle’s amazing journey—and invite readers along for the ride.

My Take on the Book
This was a great book filled with stories, some that I was aware of, but so many that were new to me. As someone who grew up with the highs and lows of the space shuttle, I loved reading this and appreciated all of the intricate details that were included in this book. There was so much that I was unaware of and this book shares it with the reader. You not only gain a better understanding of the technical side of things in regards to space travel and the shuttle, but you also get to know the people through the interviews and so much more that the author shares. On each page you are transported further and further into the book and even though at first the book may seem long, you will find yourself flying through this and compelled to read even more (or at least I was).

I highly recommend this to all, as it offers rich description and detail as well as unprecedented access to insider interviews and research that I have never come across before in a book on this topic before!
