Wild @ Art Encourges Children to Let Their Imagination go Wild!

I find that as my daughters get older they want to have more and more individuality and I know that now that Diva-J is in school, this will only continue, and most likely get worse. Even now, we see this in the things that we buy for school. I am amazed at how little things can send them into a tizzy, while other things are inconsequential.

When I was asked to check out the Wild@art Pencil Art and Wild@art Eraser Art kits I was impressed by the fact the kits do allow kids to express who they are in the way that they want. What I liked most was watching what my daughter chose to do with each of the kits and watch her creative juices flow.

Anything Diva-J can make with her hand she tends to enjoy, so in both of these she was excited.

The sets were very easy for Diva-J to use and make her own pencil and eraser designs. In both sets there were some fun accessories.

If you are for a gift that will bring out the best in your childs' creativity these kits are definitely ones to consider!

  • Pick a fabric, wrap it around the dress form and secure it in the Style Lock System on the back!
  • It's Easy!
  • Use the stylus tool to lock fabric into place.
  • Add fashion flare to your outfit with stickers and rhinestones.
  • The possibilities are endless with Harumika!
My Take on the Product
This product truly captured my eldest daughters imagination. As someone who loves Barbie and her Polly Pockets and dressing them up in her own fashion. This product allows her to design and make the outfits just like a designer would. My only complaint is that it didn't come with more fabrics. The product does come with some, but you are limited. You may have to try and find some other fabrics at a fabric store and then cut the pieces to size to add to your collection (If you can figure it out).

Overall, a fun, creative toy that anyone interested in clothing design will get a kick out of.

Juno Jr. DVDs

Original Orchestral Music by Award-Winning Composer
The Day the Music Stopped is part of the Juno Jr. Series, which is designed to introduce musical concepts to children of preschool age. The series was created by Emmy-award winning composer and mom, Belinda Takahashi, Ph.D., and it features her original orchestral music compositions for children. Unlike many music-appreciation toys that feature electronic sounds, the Juno Jr. series features original orchestral music recorded by real musicians on real instruments. The Day the Music Stopped gives children a valuable opportunity to hear and learn through a variety of authentic sounds and rhythms.

Follow Juno and Her Friends on a Magical Musical Adventure

Like all Juno Jr. videos, The Day the Music Stopped features Juno, a little girl who loves music, her baby brother Rai Rai, and her adorable friends. Vibrant animation and rich storylines serve as the background to the adorable puppet characters.

Designed to engage preschool-age children, The Day the Music Stopped has an extended plotline featuring Juno and her friends. Juno and her little brother Rai Rai are magically transported to the world of Harmonia Springs--a town where the trees are made of cellos, cars are shaped like bass clefs, lamp posts are shaped like French horns, and chimneys are made of tuba bells.

When Juno and Rai Rai's friend Bunny accidentally presses the big red button on Murphy's Shush Machine, she inadvertently silences the town of Harmonia Springs. Juno realizes that in order to bring life back to the town, she and her friends have to create their own music with melody, harmony, rhythm, and--most of all--friendship.

A Dynamic Musical Experience
Over the course of their journey, Juno and her friends sing fun and exciting songs with engaging melodies and rhythms. The songs are accompanied by orchestral arrangements that can be enjoyed by both children and parents alike.

Juno Jr.'s The Day the Music Stopped DVD has a runtime of approximately 60 minutes and offers English, Spanish, and French language options. Interactive bonus features include Let's Interact! and Language Flash Cards.

My Take on the DVD
My youngest daughter had never seen Juno before reviewing this DVD, but after seeing it, she was hooked! The music as well as plot were things that drew her in and even I found it to be engaging. After now watching it a few times she loves to sing and dance along with whatever comes on the screen. The characters are fun loving and keep her attention as well. My eldest who is six watched the DVD for a short period of time but it did not hold her attention like it did for Diva-PJ.

As a previous puppeteer, I found the puppets to be fun and the puppeteers were very skilled. Overall, this was a fun DVD that any preschooler would enjoy!

Book Review - The Nomination

About the Book
William Tapply, the adored author of dozens of books, including more than twenty New England-based mystery novels, continues to delight us with his work even after his tragic death in July 2009 from leukemia. The Nomination, his wildly anticipated final stand-alone thriller offers a suspenseful and intricately woven plot that keeps the reader guessing until the very last page!

Here, Tapply brings events from the final days of the Vietnam War into direct conflict with contemporary American politics. It’s a fast-paced story of passion, loneliness, desperation, greed, murder, and justice that forces us all to ask ourselves just how far we would go to conceal the dark, incriminating secrets of our past.

Vietnam War hero and Massachusetts judge Thomas Larrigan is tapped by his friend, the President, to fill the upcoming vacancy on the Supreme Court of the United States. The President needs a sure bet, and Thomas Larrigan is the perfect candidate – a loving husband and father with a sterling judicial record. Except Larrigan has secrets, ones that he is so frantic to keep hidden that he enlists the aid of his old Marine buddy, a brutally efficient hit man, to sweep the closet clean.

But there are some secrets Larrigan does not even know are still alive.  Elusive former film goddess Simone Bonet holds close information that could crush not only Larrigan’s career, but his entire world. Meanwhile, former police detective Jesse Church, desperately on the run for her life, also possesses a secret that could destroy Larrigan, knowledge of which she isn’t yet aware. And celebrity ghostwriter Mac Cassidy, while mourning the death of his wife, will also become a threat to Larrigan’s ascendance to the highest judicial post in the land.

The Nomination is the story of how these lives intersect in deception, desperation, revelation, death, and ultimately, redemption.  Tapply’s last novel is undoubtedly one of his best - brilliantly crafted, tightly spun, and brought together with a conclusion so shocking that it leaves no doubt that Tapply’s reign as a master of the art of suspense will continue.

About the Author:
William G. Tapply was the author of dozens of books, including more than two dozen New England-based mystery novels and nearly a thousand magazine articles, mostly about fly fishing and the outdoors. Tapply died in July 2009 after a battle with leukemia. He lived and wrote in Hancock, New Hampshire.

My Take on the Book
While I have not yet read any of this authors' previous novels, but in reading this I can see how this book is able to stand on its own as a great suspense. The book was highly engaging and I found myself wanting to sit down and read continually until the end.

I found the book to be a compelling thriller that shows a sharp contrast to American politics and society. The author has done a great job at sharing evocative descriptions and complex plot. He also has done a great job at developing strong well-developed characters for the reader.

Overall, this was a great read, and this is one that I would highly recommend to all!

Book Review - When Big Issues Happen to Little Girls

About the Book
Picking up where Reviving Ophelia left off sixteen years ago, this book is a contemporary look at the big issues adolescent girls face in the 21st Century, and how a generation of parents is as ill-equipped to deal with them as the daughters themselves.

Nothing since Reviving Ophelia (and the dozens of copycats that came after) has garnered widespread attention or addressed on a large scale the tremendous responsibility and challenges of raising girls. But that was sixteen years ago. When Big Issues Happen to Little Girls (HCI Books-- $14.95), provides new help for a whole new generation of parents.

It is not another book on "raising girls," or the psychology of girls, or of eating disorders, and body issues. We know those are symptoms and coping mechanisms of greater things, and When Big Issues Happen to Little Girls poses the question: Why are our girls not able to cope?

This book answers that question by introducing and explaining the concept that today's young girls are facing adult-sized issues that are not only beyond their own level of emotional, intellectual, and physical capacities but beyond those of their own parents. The problem is not only that our girls are immersed in adult-sized conflicts, but the adults who love them are ill-equipped to deal with them or help the child deal with them. This is where the main mission of the book comes in and the uniqueness to the market is offered.

When Gen-Xers were growing up their parents were worried about things like kidnappings and how to answer embarrassing questions about oral sex, or about bisexuality or homosexuality, or helping their child deal with divorce. Now, such questions, issues, and rites of passage would be a parental dream!
While they might not have been "ready" to have the sex talk, they were equipped to have it nonetheless. But with issues that have arisen faster than you can say tweet, now grown-up Gen- X parents can't keep up with the tutorials that are required to stay current and understand what their girls are faced with. They literally don't know how to handle the new problems or the psychological and emotional repercussions that come with them, how serious they really are, and more important, where to start.
We need new guidelines. Enter Erin A. Munroe, LMHC, who has been counseling adolescents for more than a decade and sees children, adolescents, and families experiencing a range of issues--including trauma, substance abuse, depression, anxiety, attention deficit disorders, adjustment disorders, and more. Because her specialty is trauma and anxiety, Munroe is in a unique position to help parents understand how girls cope and react to stressors and adult-sized problems today, so they can be active and effective participants in their daughters' reality. But what is most valuable is Munroe's identification of common denominators that can shed light on our girls' coping styles in a broad sense. Therefore, she is the perfect person to teach parents what to do when, inevitably, big issues happen to little girls.
Erin Munroe, LMHC, is the author of the upcoming From Stressing Out to Chilling Out: The Anxiety Workbook for Girls (Fairview Press, 2010). She is also the author of the newly-published The Everything Guide to Step-parenting: Practical, Reassuring Advice for Creating Healthy, Long-Lasting Relationships (Adams Media, 2009, with credited technical reviewer Irene Levine, Ph.D.).

Currently, Erin works as a licensed mental health counselor at the South Boston Community Health Center. She sees children, adolescents, and families experiencing a range of issues—including trauma, substance abuse, depression, anxiety, attention deficit disorders, adjustment disorders, and more. Erin's position at the health center started as a part-time position in their confidential teen clinic, where Erin still provides counseling and support to teenagers struggling with everything from college applications to talking to their parents about pregnancy.

Erin has worked in the mental health field since 2001. She has worked with adolescents in schools as a licensed school guidance counselor and adjustment counselor, and outside of school as a licensed mental health counselor. She dedicated herself to the field after working with a program whose goal was to reunite families whose children had been taken away due to abuse and neglect.

Erin attended Boston University where she earned her graduate degree in mental health counseling and behavioral medicine. As an undergraduate, Erin attended the College of the Holy Cross, where she majored in English and completed significant coursework in deaf studies. Erin also provides trainings in self-care, relaxation, life balance, and identifying and managing mental illness in the classroom.

My Take on the Book
This book is a great guide for parents to better understand the issues that adolescents face on a daily basis. The power of this book is that the authors understand that parents don't always know what to say or how to say it. Thus, this book suggests that though open communication parents will be able to help their daughters deal with the issues that they struggle with.

One of the things that I know that I have struggled with in the past was in allowing my own emotions when dealing with often upsetting or confusing situations with my girls. This book provides parents specific strategies to manage their emotions and build stronger communication ties.

As a parent I am always looking for resources that will help me in the future as my girls get older and they start having to deal with the challenging issues that I know will come eventually.

I strongly recommend this book to parents of daughters to find new ways to help them to become stronger individuals as well as to build a stronger relationship with them.

Book Review - The Whistleblower

About the BookKathryn’s story is unique, heroic, and compelling—and as Rachel Weisz herself says, Kathryn is “a remarkable woman who had the courage to tell the truth and stand up for the victims of sex trafficking, putting her own life on the line.”

When Nebraska police officer and divorced mother of three Kathryn Bolkovac saw a recruiting announcement for private military contractor DynCorp International, she applied and was hired. Good money, world travel, and the chance to help rebuild a war-torn country sounded like the perfect job. Bolkovac was shipped out to Bosnia, where DynCorp had been contracted to support the UN peacekeeping mission. She was assigned as a human rights investigator, heading the gender affairs unit. The lack of proper training provided sounded the first alarm bell, but once she arrived in Sarajevo, she found out that things were a lot worse. At great risk to her personal safety, she began to unravel the ugly truth about officers involved in human trafficking and forced prostitution and their connections to private mercenary contractors, the UN, and the U.S. State Department. After bringing this evidence to light, Bolkovac was demoted, felt threatened with bodily harm, was fired, and ultimately forced to flee the country under cover of darkness—bringing the incriminating documents with her. Thanks to the evidence she collected, she won a lawsuit against DynCorp, finally exposing them for what they had done. This is her story and the story of the women she helped achieve justice for.

About the Author

Kathryn Bolkovac is a former police investigator from Nebraska who served as an International Police Task Force human rights investigator in Bosnia. She cooperated with Human Rights Watch to expose the misconduct and human rights abuses committed against young girls, forced into prostitution and used as sex slaves by U.S. military contractors such as DynCorp and other UN-related police and international organizations. She lives in Lincoln, Nebraska, and Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Cari Lynn is the author of three books of narrative nonfiction, including Leg the Spread: A Woman’s Adventures Inside the Trillion-Dollar Boys Club of Commodities Trading. Lynn has written for numerous magazines and newspapers including O, Health, Good Housekeeping, and the Chicago Tribune. She lives in Los Angeles, CA.

My Take on the BookThis is the story of an amazing woman. Kathy is a remarkable woman who was willing to stand up and tell the truth, standing up for the victims of sex trafficking, even to the extent of putting her own life on the line. In reading this book I have to say that this book opened my eyes to some of the dark aspects of our societies.

I was deeply moved by this authors' story and know that her voice must be heard to be able to raise further awareness about the consequences of war. Both Kathryn Bolkovac and Cari Lynn have shown great courage and moral strength in bringing these issues to the forefront. This book was both disturbing and fascinating and though this is not something that most will want to admit exists in our society, it is very important that everyone understands so that these practices will cease to exist in the future.

Book Review - No Urn for the Ashes

About the Book
There is no telling the chaos that would result from an announcement that someone discovered a formula that would enable us to replace fossil fuels.  Every nation would want to get their hands on it - there would be no end to the lengths they would go to in order to get control of the secret that would make them the most powerful nation on earth!

No Urn for the Ashes (Bayfire Press Publishing) is an outstanding novel by Alison Sawyer Current.  It is the perfect blend of adventure, thrills, compassion and grief, and the author’s choice of her dynamic characters reflects an incredible insight into human nature.
Tennyson Garland is the genius behind the discovery of this formula and he knew he must keep it a secret.  After this brilliant scientist and his young daughter tragically die in a fire at their isolated mountain cabin, his widow realizes there are evil forces at work that will stop at nothing to control the world with this discovery.   Eight years pass and Taylor is in the midst of a failing marriage, still suffering the loss of her first husband and child, and finds herself having to deal with the past once again.  She gets caught up in the treachery of Kevin Levine, the former colleague of her first husband who was always left behind in the wake of Tennyson’s brilliance.  The drama that follows leads her to believe that her daughter may actually be alive!

In this suspense-filled, page-turning story readers get transported to Nicaragua and on to Mexico when a new struggle arises – with the prize being the greatest discovery of modern times.  We follow Taylor in her search for her long-lost child as she deals not only with the past, but with the return of her absent father who is tortured by his own demons, and the mysterious stranger who was hired by him but who may represent an even greater threat than even Levine’s insatiable ambition for control!  Readers share Taylor’s warm relationship with Ruby, her dearest friend and most intimate confidant, and the uneasy and emotion-packed truce with Patricia, the mother by adoption of a girl named Emma – who may well turn out to be Taylor’s long-lost child, Rebecca.

No Urn for the Ashes is action-packed to the very end.  For more information on either the book or its creative author, please visit www.bayfirepress.com.

My Take on the Book
This book keeps you on the edge of your seat! As a mystery lover, this book draws you into Isla Mujeres in Mexico. The author has done a remarkable job at developing the characters within this book as well as weaving a beautiful geographic tapestry for the reader to explore.

I found the book to be a page turner and one that made me forget about the world around me and instead be drawn into the struggles that the characters within the book face both in Nicaragua and then Mexico.

The characters within this book are faced with so many personal challenges that they have had to deal with both in the past and present, that as a reader you do feel for them and you start to want them to succeed. As all the plots unfold readers encourter and bear witness to Taylor's emotional journey as she attempts to make sense of her past and how to deal with the dilemmas of the present.

In this book, he author treats readers to both a mysterious plot as well as wonderful characters in which to identify.

Overall, this book is a strong one and one that I would recommend to any Mystery lover!

Book Review - Shmirshky: The Pursuit of Hormone Happiness

About the Book
Hot flashes flashing you? Awake at 3 a.m.? Forgetting the names of your very own children? Don't worry--E, the author of Shmirshky, understands how you feel.

Shmirshky is the first book of its kind--a guide to women's midlife changes that's quick, easy, and full of love! Reading Shmirshky is like having coffee with a hilarious friend who tells it straight about hormone craziness and how to get help.

Let's face it, perimenopause and menopause are still too rarely talked about. Shmirshky turns this taboo topic into an all-inclusive page-turner.

Whether you're a woman who's suddenly losing her keys, her temper, and her mind, or that woman's partner, child, or friend, Shmirshky is for you.

Suffering in silence is OUT. Reaching out is IN.

What the heck is a shmirshky?
  • a delicious dessert?
  • an ancient form of yoga?
  • a superfood?
  • a posh baby stroller brand?
  • a painful deep tissue massage?
  • an automatic floor mop?
  • a precursor to modern-day vodka?
  • the feeling you get after eating too many French fries?
  • a feeling of serenity and empowerment? a community? a movement?
  • a name for something special that only women possess?
  • a guide to achieving your very own version of hormone happiness?
  • . . . well, now you're on to something!
My Take on the BookWhile I am not a woman going through menopause, I do have women in my life who will reach this point in the future or have already gone through this, so for me it is good for me to understand the process and what women go through during this time.

The book was an easy read and a very personal journey that was shared by the author. Some of the journey for me was a bit uncomfortable in content (seeing that I am a guy), but it was informative and opened my eyes. I can see how this book would be a valuable resource for any individual going through menopause or preparing for this.

Overall, this was a great book, and one that was very informative. I would highly recommend this book for anyone that is going through menopause or preparing for this in the future.

Book Review - Tapping the Source

About the Book
Easy to use, enjoyable to read, and proven effective, this is a revolutionary new method for taking advantage of the “law of attraction” drawn from the legendary Master Key System.

Thanks to such books as Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich and the recent best-selling The Secret, millions of people now realize that success comes from more than just chance, fate, good connections, or even hard work. At the same time, these volumes don't offer a practical daily process for attaining your goals-and that's exactly what Tapping the Source provides. It teaches a daily method that stimulates the process for manifesting your dreams outlined in The Secret. These techniques can be applied to any aspect of life, from sex to career to creativity. Just “tap into the source”-daily Manifestation Sessions, each totaling no more than three to five minutes-and live the life you want!

What is the MASTER KEY SYSTEM?
The genesis of the ideas in Tapping the Source-which are a natural extension of the concepts expounded upon in The Secret-is Charles Haanel's classic 1912 work, The Master Key System. Although Napoleon Hill is popularly considered the father of the “law of attraction,” a letter from Hill to Charles Haanel, reproduced in Tapping the Source, thanks Haanel for his illuminating ideas. The letter is dated 1919, 18 years before Think and Grow Rich was published.

My Take on the BookThis book was so inspirational. The book does a great job at motivating the reader to find their true passions. In reading this book, I even found myself encouraged into finding my own passions. I found that this book can easily boost someone's self-esteem!

Though I am a positive person, I have had my own issues with finding inner peace while trying to balance being a father, employee. What I learned from this book is that the only way I will be successful is to find happiness in what I do with my life.

This book is not an overnight fix, instead it is something that will challenge you to change your life if you wish to challenge yourself!

My Take on the BookThi book i full of great information that will definitely get you ready to use your iPad up and running. The book is a great read and though it look long, it is an easy and quick read. The book is full of pictures and reference information. and includes a large number of pictures for reference purposes and learning about your iPad without actually having an iPad in front of you.

What makes this book great is that it covers most of the information that the new user will need and be interested in. Some of the information was simple such as turning the iPad off and on. The book is well set up and made using the iPad simple. In the end of the book they even get into more advanced topics such as moving Microsoft Office docs to and from your iPad and suggested apps - though the apps are a bit out of date.

Overall, this is a great book and one that I would highly recommend.
