Book Review - Unbridled: Taming the Bully

About the Book
About one in every five high school students is bullied, according to the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control.

What’s the best way to combat bullying? Sheila R. Smart says the best way is the Christ-like way.

With more than 30 years of experience in youth ministry, author and lay minister Sheila R. Smart introduces a novel approach to combat bullying by placing dependence on God who provides power, courage and wisdom. Weaving Scripture into an educational story for the youth, Smart addresses serious issues surrounding teen bullying, such as suicide, disrespect and lack of forgiveness.

In her new book, Unbridled: Taming the Bully, Smart tells a story of two children who are bullied after they move to a new city and a new school. Throughout this story, Smart shows young teens how Christ-mirrored ways can counteract bullying. Using themes of forgiveness, together with Jesus’ love and redemption, this book is a guide for using Scriptures and prayer to influence the behavior of bullies in a positive way, bringing them to their knees.

Not only is Unbridled meant for teens, but it also can serve as a guidebook for parents, grandparents, teachers and other community leaders. Smart’s messaging is applicable to many social situations.

Through Smart’s experience as a superintendent of children’s ministries in Queens, N.Y., and Charlotte, N.C., coupled with the research performed with her grandchildren, she wrote a practical, relatable story that teaches children tangible ways to independently and responsibly combat bullying.

Unbridled is a must-have for every Christian family’s bookshelf and serves as a teen’s go-to book for hope, courage, faith and determination.

My Take on the Book
As a person who was bullied when I was young, this was a great story that really brought out a great message for all families to share with their children. What I loved about the story was how the author brought out Jesus' message in the actions of the characters and how she was able to let the reader learn new, more spiritual ways for how people can deal with bullies on a daily basis.  The book provided a fun to read tale that was practical in nature and provided the reader with some great insights into what they should do to deal with bullies! This is a great read for any young teen as it makes you rethink the way you may have thought about bullying in the past and how you can re-conceptualize them for the future.
