Book Review - Backseat

About the Book
In his first foray into fiction, author Tom Wascoe gives readers a road adventure that will resonate with anyone who has ever found themselves in an unexpected place.

Backseat tells the story of Michael, an introverted college freshman whose longing for acceptance leads him to pledge a fraternity. When he unexpectedly finds himself among the last group of pledges, he accepts a most unusual challenge: hitchhike 1500 miles and back in three days with only ten dollars in his pocket.

A shy loner with an uncertain future, Michael realizes this is his first real adventure, and sets out to soak in every new experience he encounters. As he stands by the side of the road with his thumb out on a freezing December evening, he learns he is ready for his life to change and leaps headfirst into the experience of a lifetime. Paired with a pledge he hardly knows, Michael begins to see the world in a new light as he meets people he never expected to and finds kindness where he least expects it.

Peppered with interesting characters and witty inner monologue, Backseat is the tale of one young man’s journey to find himself along the highways and byways of America and still get back in time for class on Monday.

Full of colorful, quirky characters and told through the eyes of a young man full of awe and wonder, Backseat takes readers on the journey of a lifetime. Anyone who has ever heard the call of the road will find themselves drawn in to Michael’s adventure and will find themselves furiously turning pages to discover where he will end up.

My Take on the Book
This is a coming of age story that is so well written. You have a great opportunity to see the world in a completely different way. I found the book to be a fun and interesting book that had me wondering what would come next. The pages just flew by and I have to say that I was quite impressed with the character development. I really liked the character of Michael and though he was not much like me, I completely related to him and to the other characters in the story. I truly enjoyed this book and this is definitely a story I would recommend to all!
