Book Review - Pepper Parrot's Problem with Patience: A Captain No Beard Story

About the Book
“Pepper Parrot’s Problem with Patience: A Captain No Beard Story” (ISBN 1478113553) is the hotly anticipated sequel to 2012’s Kirkus Award-winning “Captain No Beard: An Imaginary Tale of a Pirate’s Life” by children’s book author Carole P. Roman. Known for its playful pirate ship crew and important life lessons, the “Captain No Beard” series offers young readers the unique opportunity to jump aboard a fictional pirate ship and join the crew for a day.

Aboard the Flying Dragon, the crew learns that new crewmate Pepper Parrot is having trouble with the drills. The problem is simple; Pepper doesn’t know her right from her left side. Despite her growing frustrations, the crew of the Flying Dragon, including Captain No Beard and his cousin Hallie, teach her a trick to learn the difference between her right and left.

The latest entry to the series shows young readers that they shouldn’t be sad or frustrated over situations, because they have the ability to overcome anything. “Pepper Parrot’s Problem with Patience” demonstrates to young readers that with others around them who are patiently waiting and willing to help guide them toward progress and success, anything is achievable.

Touching upon frustration, anger and dyslexia, Captain No Beard and his crew show children everywhere that through teamwork and reasoning, any problem can be solved. Emphasizing the ability to improve and learn with confidence and guidance, the solution-oriented crew of The Flying Dragon can uplift anyone’s spirits and entertain them with their crazy antics.

My Take on the Book
Carol P. Roman's story about Pepper Parrot's problem with distinguishing left from right is appropriate to share with young children. It is a story of patience, understanding, teamwork, and compassion for individual differences.

Carole shares a strategy in the story to help a child distinguish left from right. The story shows clearly that we can help our children to become confident even with a few tricks if they are having difficulty.
