Book Review - Out of the Wild Night

Out of the Wild Night

About the Book

Ghosts are alive on the island of Nantucket. You can hear them in the wind and in the creaks of the old homes. They want to be remembered. And, even more, they want to protect what was once theirs.

The ghosts have chosen a few local kids to save the island against the adults who would do it harm. But the kids can't be sure how the ghosts are going to act. Things tend to disappear when ghosts are around. People tend to get trapped - especially if they're up to no good. Only the kids can make things right . . . if the ghosts will let them.

Out of the Wild Night is master storyteller Blue Balliett at her spooky best, a spellbinding tale about the haunted residents of a very special place.

My Take on the Book
This was a great book full of adventure, mystery and supernatural phenomena. This book had a great plot and on every page, as a reader, you find yourself wondering what will come next and whether the Ghosts and kids can do what needs to be done to be able to save the island. This was a book that was a ton of fun to read. I found myself not wanting to put the book down!

Book Review - The Courage Way: Leading and Living with Integrity

The Courage Way: Leading and Living with Integrity

About the Book
Leadership demands courage. You have to make good decisions while balancing inevitable tensions and knowing when to take risks. You need to keep your values in sight regardless of the pressures around you. At its core, leadership is a daily, ongoing practice, a journey toward becoming your best self and inviting others to do the same.

And that's where The Courage Way comes in. It's a guide to leadership that shows how to access and draw upon courage in all that you do. It has its roots in the work of Parker J. Palmer, who in fifty years of teaching, speaking, and writing has explored the human spirit--what he has called "the inner landscape"--and its role in life and leadership.

Shelly Francis identifies key ingredients needed to cultivate courage, the most fundamental being trust--in ourselves and in each other. She describes how to build trust through the Center for Courage & Renewal's Circle of Trust approach, centered around eleven "touchstones," poetic and practical operating guidelines for holding the meaningful conversations vital to trust building. Each chapter features true stories of how leaders have overcome challenges and strengthened their organizations through touchstones such as "Extend invitation, not demand"; "No fixing, saving, advising, or correcting"; and "When the going gets rough, turn to wonder."

My Take on the Book
I am always interested in finding amazing books that can help me become a stronger leader and this book was definitely one that I have taken so much out of thus far. I have actually gone back through this for the second time to learn even more. What is so great about this book is that it is a truthful account of how you can turn around the relationships that you have with others and work to build authentic relationships with those around you. As you read this you see that this book is filled with a ton of tools, stories and ideas that will help you to create a strong vision as well as assist you in leading with courage, humor, kindness and more. This book really helps you find your inner strength that will help you become a stronger and better leader.

Book Review - Clem Hetherington and the Ironwood Race

Clem Hetherington and the Ironwood Race

About the Book
A dangerous rally race... and archaeology?!

Clementine Hetherington and her robot brother, Digory, have run away from the orphanage they've been living in since their parents died. Clem and Dig want to follow in their famous archaeologist mother's footsteps, but no one will take them seriously. Their chance arrives when a man from their past saves Digory's life, and to repay the debt they enter a multiday rally race... to recover stolen artifacts! Clem and Dig hope to win so they can give the artifacts to a museum, but their opponents want to sell them on the black market. The Ironwood Race has no rules, and Clem and Dig might be in over their heads!

My Take on the Book
This is a review that my daughter wrote about this book...

I thought this graphic novel was great. It is about a girl named Clementine but people call her Clem. She has a robot brother named Digory, but people call him dig . Clem's parents died but she does not  know how they died, so she lived in a orphanage. She ran away with Dig and they lived in a vacant store/apartment. Then one of their parents' so called friends found them in the apartment and asked if they would go on a dig with him, however, they turned down the offer at first. Later, when some people break Digory, Clem runs and asks for help and says to the friend of the parents "if you fix him, I will do the dig". Digory got fixed and they decided to assist with the dig. Clem is great at riding in the front seat of a race car and wins most races but finds difficulties in the way that she races and at the end she finds out a huge secret. I think it was a great book and I hope there is another one soon!

Book Review - The Perfect Pillow

The Perfect Pillow

About the Book
In his strange new room on his big new bed, Brody tosses and turns, holding his stuffed dragon named Horst. His parents can't help him fall asleep, so he has no choice to go out and search for a better bed. Is it a squirrel's nest? A cloud? A rowboat on a pond? No, the moon is too bright, and the croaking frogs are too loud, so there's nothing for it but to go back home and jump into his big new bed, where a friendly dragon makes a perfect pillow.

Young readers will enjoy floating along with Brody and Horst in this friendly nocturnal adventure with all the makings of a bedtime classic.

My Take on the Book
This is a very cute story that shows you a story of a boy that is trying to find the best place to sleep. It is fun to watch him try so many different places. The story is fun and the illustrations are beautiful!

Book Review - When Pigs Fly

Henry is ready to do what no pig has done before. "But pigs can't fly," says his sister, Henrietta. Nothing will stop Henry from trying, until it looks as though gravity might finally get the better of him. Fortunately, Henrietta has an idea that gives both of them a lift.

Henry's determination and Henrietta's imagination combine to make a positive sibling story about creative play and teamwork.

My Take on the Book
This is a very cute story that talks about both sharing and caring, both important things that I know we try to teach our own kids. This book teaches these messages in fun ways that will allow them to learn and have fun while reading as well.
