Soul Riders: The Legend Awakens

About the Book

The Soul Riders series tells the heroic tale of four young girls who have been chosen by destiny to save the world from the ancient demon: Garnok and his band of dangerous Dark Riders.

Having split up on their own individual missions at the end of book 1, the Soul Riders are now in increasing danger. In a desperate act, Anne manages to save her friends by using her newfound magical abilities. Together again, the Soul Riders feel their powers intensify as they work in unison for the first time. The legend awakens as they start their training with the druids and learn who they are and what it means to be a Soul Rider.

To truly master their powers they must obtain a book that is kept by the witch Pi who was once an ally to the druids, but now has turned on them. When they return to the druids, they learn that a magical rift has been opened up threatening to destroy Winter Valley and the thousands who live there. Linda has visions of the dark and terrible fate that awaits if the Dark Riders succeed. But worst of all, they realize that they are the ones who caused the rift and have no choice but to ride out together to try and neutralize the threat . . .

The Legend Awakens is the second installment in the epic, fantasy trilogy, Soul Riders, about magic, friendship, and horses bound to thrill all young equestrian fans.

My Take on the Book
Just like in the first book, this book follows the game that you can play online. If you have never played that in the past you may want to try this out to better understand some of the context of the characters and more. The book is a fun read and the characters were well developed in my daughters' perspective. The book follows the first book well and by the end, you will be waiting for book 3!

Book Review - The Amelia Six

The Amelia Six

About the Book
Amelia Earhart’s famous aviator goggles go missing and eleven-year-old Millie has to find them before the night is over in this girl-powered middle grade whodunit.

Eleven-year-old Amelia Ashford—Millie to her friends (if she had any, that is)—doesn’t realize just how much adventure awaits her when she’s given the opportunity of a lifetime: to spend the night in Amelia Earhart’s childhood home with five other girls. Make that five strangers. But Millie’s mom is a pilot like the famous Amelia, and Millie would love to have something to write to her about…if only she had her address.

Once at Amelia’s house in Atchison, Kansas, Millie stumbles upon a display of Amelia’s famous flight goggles. She can’t believe her good luck, since they’re about to be relocated to a fancy museum in Washington, DC. But her luck changes quickly when the goggles disappear, and Millie was the last to see them. Soon, fingers are pointing in all directions, and someone falls strangely ill. Suddenly, a fun night of scavenger hunts and sweets takes a nosedive and the girls aren’t sure who to trust. With a blizzard raging outside and a house full of suspects, the girls have no choice but to band together. It’s up to the Amelia Six to find the culprit and return the goggles to their rightful place. Or the next body to collapse could be one of theirs.

My Take on the Book
This was a fun mystery that has some strong women characters throughout. As a father of girls I am always looking for books that have strong girls that my girls can connect to and this book did just that. You get six girls that love science that come together to solve a mystery tied to Amelia Earhart. If you love mysteries you will love this fun book. The book is geared toward middle school readers and my seventh grader did love this book. She told me that she loved the story and the way the characters have to work together. The book keeps you guessing throughout. It is clever and really a book that you will want to keep reading from beginning to end!

Book Review - Unbirthday: A Twisted Tale

About the Book
What if Wonderland was in peril and Alice was very, very late?

Alice is different than other eighteen-year-old ladies in Kexford, which is perfectly fine with her. She'd rather spend golden afternoons with her trusty camera or in her aunt Vivian's lively salon, ignoring her sister's wishes that she stop all that "nonsense" and become a "respectable" member of society. Alice is happy to meander to Miss. Yao's teashop or to visit the children playing in the Square. She's also interested in learning more about the young lawyer she met there, but just because she's curious, of course, not because he was sweet and charming.

But when Alice develops photographs she has recently taken about town, familiar faces of old suddenly appear in the place of her actual subjects-the Queen of Hearts, the Mad Hatter, the Caterpillar. There's something eerily off about them, even for Wonderland creatures. And as Alice develops a self-portrait, she finds the most disturbing image of all-a badly-injured dark-haired girl asking for Alice's help. Mary Ann.

Returning to the place of nonsense from her childhood, Alice finds herself on a mission to stop the Queen of Hearts' tyrannical rule and to find her place in both worlds. But will she able to do so . . . before the End of Time?

My Take on the Book
I love Twisted Tales and seeing what these authors come up with to make these books make the Disney characters that you know and love. I have read many of these books in the past and I have to say that I loved this one. The book really allows you to see some amazing antics, madness and more and even though this book is 500 pages, the pages fly by! The story itself was great and made it hard to put the book down. By the end of this I was so excited to see the next book in this line of books!

Book Review - The Positive Influence Leader: Helping People Become Their Best Self

The Positive Influence Leader: Helping People Become Their Best Self

    About the Book

No one can do it for you, but you don’t have to do it alone.

Everyone benefits from a positive influence in their lives. If you think about the various types of leaders you’ve encountered—parents, teachers, coaches, bosses—you can probably pinpoint one, perhaps more than one, leader who provided the support, the skills, or the inspiration that helped you become your best self.

The heart of the book is a series of in-depth interviews with a diverse group of leaders across a wide spectrum of organizations. The interviews are supplemented by similar experiences of famous and successful people such as Oprah Winfrey, Michael Bloomberg, and LeBron James.

Michael and Glenn Parker demonstrate the various ways positive influence leaders have altered the lives and careers of many successful people. The book is both inspirational and instructive. It will move you to become a positive influence leader or help you learn ways to increase your effectiveness as a leader. In one of the most compelling sections of the book, people share their encounters with negative people and the mechanisms they developed for coping—and in most cases, thriving—as a result of the experience.

Positive Influence: The Leader Who Helps People Become Their Best Self highlights four types of positive influence leaders:
    • The Supportive Positive Influence Leader
    • The Teacher Positive Influence Leader
    • The Motivating Positive Influence Leader
    • The Role Model Influence Leader
Research by the Parkers indicates that you can be a positive influence on others in ways that are different from other positive influence leaders. And yet, while each style is different, any one of the four can be helpful, especially if it is targeted to your specific needs.

A Positive Influence Toolkit. In addition to sharing inspiring stories and practical strategies, the Parkers provide you with the tools you need to assess your current style of leadership and become a more effective positive influence leader. In the book, you will find:
    • A survey to help you identify your specific positive leadership style;
    • Tips for becoming a more effective positive influence leader; and
    • An improvement plan that will help you increase your effectiveness as a positive influence leader.
Positive Influence: The Leader Who Helps People Become Their Best Self is both inspirational and practical. The personal stories offer a hopeful path for leaders looking for positive change, while the tools and techniques provide a solid foundation for effective leadership development.

    My Take on the Book
This was a great book that really explores the importance of influencing others. This book was an amazing book that teaches you about the type of positive influence leaders and also about even turning a negative influence experience into a positive one. The book is practical in nature, has self-assessment  and other tools that will help you to be a more positive influencer within your work and in your life. This is a book that I would highly recommend to all!

5,203 Things to Do Instead of Looking at Your Phone

    About the Book

    Because life is calling.

Put down your phone, close the lid on your laptop, and get back in touch with the wonders of the world around you. With thousands of ideas for simple, beautiful things to do instead of scrolling down the rabbit hole of cyberspace, this healing little book offers the opportunity, 5,203 times, to slow down, look up, and rediscover what makes you feel nourished and grounded as a human being. With illustrations throughout by Scot Ritchie.

    My Take on the Book
This was a great book that I gave to my daughter right away. Her generation spends a lot of time on their phone and sometimes I feel like I have to give her a ton of ideas about things she could be doing instead. This book is filled with a ton of great ideas to do just that. I will say that some of the things that are suggested are more for adults that are living on their own, but there are other ideas that are great for teens too! I loved this book and you could easily even mark off things that you have done to challenge yourself to do something new everyday! This is definitely a book I recommend to all!

    My Take on the Book
This book really allows you to delve deeper into who you are as a man and a father. The author has allowed you to take some down-to-earth learning from fathers from many different walks of life and turn this learning into action. After each story you will be asked to write out some answers to questions that will help you better define your own thoughts on fatherhood. Book Review - Inside Your Customer's Imagination: 5 Secrets for Creating Breakthrough Products, Services, and Solutions

    About the Book

Organizations need to offer customers breakthrough products, services, and solutions to effectively compete in today's innovation-hungry economy. The challenge is customers often don't know precisely what they want. As Henry Ford is reputed to have said, "If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses."

To surprise and awe your customers, Chip Bell advises developing co-creation partnerships with them. Co-creation partnerships are about fulfilling customers' hopes and aspirations, not just their needs and expectations. Co-creation partnerships require (1) curiosity that uncovers insight, (2) grounding that promotes clear focus, (3) discovery that fosters risk-taking, (4) trust that safeguards partnership purity, and (5) passion that inspires energized generosity.

Using examples from organizations like McDonald's, DHL, Marriott, Lockheed Martin, Discover Financial, Ultimate Software, and many more, Bell shows how co-creation partnerships enable you to tap into the treasure trove of ideas, ingenuity, and genius-in-the-raw within every customer.

    My Take on the Book
This book takes a unique perspective from an amazing author that has lived the experience he is trying to teach. This book helps you think about your customer and really inspire you to think creatively about what you want to offer to keep your customers coming back. The book is full of great stories that illustrate the learning that he is sharing and from beginning to end you are taken on a journey of discovery that will spark your own imagination to the possibilities in front of you. The book is one you will not want to put down!

Movie Review - We Bare Bears: The Movie

    We Bare Bears: The Movie

    About the Movie
When Grizz, Panda, and Ice Bear catch the attention of the Department of Wildlife Control, their world turns upside down. The Bears are left with no choice but to go on the run.

    My Take on the Movie
My kids have been fans of We Bare Bears for years. While it had been a little while since they last watched them, they were excited to see this movie to relive their love of these characters. The movie really hits on topics that are relevant today but it also hits on topics of love, acceptance, friendship and more, while keeping with the humor that people know. This is a family friendly movie that was a ton of fun to watch. Highly recommend to all!
