Book Review - The World's Best Jokes for Kids Volume 2: Every Single One

About the Book

"What did the table say to the chair? Dinner's on me." Kids love jokes, and they also love silly drawings. This book is unique in that every joke is illustrated by New York Times bestselling duo Swerling & Lazar. Each drawing is a sweet comic gem in itself and will help get the kids reading ... and the whole family laughing.

This illustrated book by the New York Times bestselling creators of the Happiness Is . . . project will leave your family in stitches. The World’s Best Jokes for Kids Volume 2 is filled with hundreds of corny, brilliant, and silly jokes—each paired with a small drawing that’s a sweet comic gem in itself. It’s the perfect book for road trips, rainy days, or those special moments when kids and parents can laugh together.

My Take on the Book

This is another great joke book. We loved the first volume of this and this new volume was just as fun! We tend to try and send jokes in the kids lunches so we are always looking for new "fun" jokes that they will love. With the book we were able to find new jokes we had never seen before. The kids loved the jokes and we all loved the illustrations that we found throughout the book!

My Take on the Book
My kids love jokes and they loved this book too. This book had some very funny jokes within it and as they read through the book I loved hearing them laugh. On top of great jokes the book is also filled with great illustrations as well that make the book really stand out. Best of all for me, I found that the kids were remembering the jokes as well. They would tell their friends their favorite ones, which is a great sign! With this being volume one, we are all looking forward to volume 2!

Book Review - Williams Wakes Up

Williams Wakes Up

About the Book
William and his animal friends have had the whole winter to nap. Now it's time for them to wake up and welcome a very special guest. There's lots to do to get ready, from scrubbing the floors to decorating the house to baking a tasty treat. But it's so hard to leave a cozy bed. . . . Will everyone get up in time to do their part? This book's gentle rhymes and humorous illustrations full of signs of spring will make it a little easier to wait for the first warm days of the season.

My Take on the Book
We loved the earlier William book that we have read in the past and my daughters and I loved this as well. This book has amazing images throughout and a fun plot line as well. You get to see William in a new way but my girls loved it as well.

Book Review - Where Birdie Lives

Where Birdie Lives

About the Book
Perfect for toddlers who love to play as they read, this adorable interactive picture book is sure to entertain children - and their parents! This heartwarming tale tells the readers about the quest of an endearing little puppy in search of a birdie. The young reader is challenged to solve a mystery and to look for a birdie under each flap, and then be delighted to find it at the very end. High-quality polygraphy and thick board pages help children develop early motor functions and imagination, and the touching illustrations by a young artist Elena Tsvetaeva will make this book a favorite for your child.

My Take on the Book
This is a cute book that lets your child look through a different lens when looking at the world. While the book is about a bird it also allows you to see the bird and the world from the dog's vantage point as well. It was fun to see how the dog is trying to find out what a bird is and by the end he the dog does succeed. This is a great book to read to a young pre-reader or to have your early reader read with you!

My Take on the Book
The relay device has been working great over the past week that I have been using it. I love that I can give it to my daughter and she can easily talk back to us. It is a walkie-talkie type of device where you just click the middle button to talk. Beyond this though, there are applications that you can connect to this device so your child can have music or more. The device also has a geo-locator within it so it gives me piece of mind that I can know where my daughter is and I can track where she is going as well. With my daughter being more independent but not having a phone I want to be able to stay connected and this device does just that. It is easy to use and my daughter tells me the same. She loves being able to talk to me without having to call and I can say that it was a nice way to meet our needs and price-wise it was definitely in the budget.

Book Review - The Great Indoors

The Great Indoors

About the Book

When the humans head out to go camping, the animals settle in for a relaxing holiday of their own! Teen bear takes over the bathroom with her curling iron, the beavers prepare their fanciest recipes, and the deer kick up their feet for a dance party. What starts as a little unwinding soon escalates to a big mess, just in time for everyone to head home. . . .

Julie Falatko and Ruth Chan's quirky humors shine in this hilarious take on family trips that will have kids wondering what exactly goes on back at home when they're on vacation.

My Take on the Book
This is a funny story that looks at wild animals having a vacation in a human house. At first, things go well and everyone is doing things that complement each other but then as time goes on things start to go a bit awry. Then, as time does go on the animals start to see that living in the wild might be best for them after all. The book was so much fun and humorous. The images were beautiful and funny too. This is a great book that I would highly recommend to all.

Book Review - Lawrence in Fall

Lawrence in Fall

About the Book

When Lawrence Fox's teacher announces that students will be presenting their collections at show-and-tell, Lawrence realizes he doesn't have anything to share.

Luckily, Papa knows just what to do to help! Together, they venture into the woods. Lawrence is scared at first, but as he grows comfortable in the forest, he starts to recognize its magic, and how beautiful and unique each tree and leaf is, allowing him to gather a splendid, one-of-a-kind collection of his own!

My Take on the Book
Such a great book! This book not only helps young readers to understand that there are things all around them that can be unique and interesting that they can share with so many. The book shows the beauty of nature but also how nature can create ways to help you feel more a part of the world and it will continue to place you in awe as you explore it. The book also shows a great relationship between a father and son. This is a great book for all ages and the illustrations are simply gorgeous.

Book Review - Underwear!

Underwear

About the Book

Bare bear! Stop right there! Underwear!

Under where?

So begins the dialogue between a tired bear dad and a rambunctious bear cub who would rather play with his tighty whities than get into bed. Underwear makes great hair. It can even turn one into a superber, or a goggle-wearing swimming bear. But beware of a big scare! Rhymes, homonyms, and conjunctions abound in this book that could be used to teach reading, but its primary purpose is to make bedtime fun.

My Take on the Book
This is such a funny book that lets you see the hilarity that can ensue when you try to get your kids to wear underwear. This book really captures the silliness that a child can bring into the mix when it comes to this and the author does it in a fun, rhyming way that will draw you in from beginning to end. You also get amazing illustrations that are visually stunning as well. I can see this book being a family favorite for many, especially when kids are young and going through this for themselves.

Book Review - This Is the Construction Worker

This Is the Construction Worker

About the Book
Young readers will delight in this step-by-step journey as a construction worker goes about her day on the job. With compelling details, vibrant color, and a driving rhythm, This is the Construction Worker builds up excitement as the high rise project in the illustrations grows taller and taller. Emphasizing teamwork and camaraderie, this story is a great read for home and the classroom, perfect for vehicle lovers and all young fans of busy activity!

My Take on the Book
This book looks at the daily life of a construction worker. First, I have to say how great it was to see a woman in this role, as even five years ago this might not have been the case. The book walks you through the day of a construction worker. You get to see how construction workers work as a team to create the world around us. The book shows construction workers in a very good light and allows all young readers to better be able to understand what and who construction workers are.

Book Review - Harbor Bound

Harbor Bound

About the Book

Seal the hatches.
Lock the boom.
Looming waves.
Up . . . up . . . ZOOM!

Daylight is fading, so it's time for boats of all kinds to wrap up their work and navigate back to harbor. As a tugboat and its crew of father and child steer toward home, it's a race to get there before the storm does! Harbor Bound traces their energetic journey, finally culminating with a gentle lullaby as they reach the shore.

This picturebook is a natural choice for children who love vehicle stories, and its steady, lilting rhythm makes it perfect for bedtime reading.

My Take on the Book
This was a beautiful book that incorporates boating terms in a lyrical way to create a beautiful book with images that draw you in. The book walks you through a typical day and with the words that a sailor or boater would know but the general public might not, you learn a lot within this book. I also love that there was a glossary in the back to help your young reader to better understand these terms!

Book Review - Wilma's Way Home: The Life of Wilma Mankiller

Wilma's Way Home: The Life of Wilma Mankiller

About the Book

As a child in Oklahoma, Wilma Mankiller experienced the Cherokee practice of Gadugi, helping each other, even when times were hard for everyone. But in 1956, the federal government uprooted her family and moved them to California, wrenching them from their home, friends, and traditions. Separated from her community and everything she knew, Wilma felt utterly lost until she found refuge in the Indian Center in San Francisco. There, she worked to build and develop the local Native community and championed Native political activists. She took her two children to visit tribal communities in the state, and as she introduced them to the traditions of their heritage, she felt a longing for home.

Returning to Oklahoma with her daughters, Wilma took part in Cherokee government. Despite many obstacles, from resistance to female leadership to a life-threatening accident, Wilma's courageous dedication to serving her people led to her election as the first female chief of the Cherokee Nation. As leader and advocate, she reinvigorated her constituency by empowering them to identify and solve community problems.

This beautiful addition to the Big Words series will inspire future leaders to persevere in empathy and thoughtful problem-solving, reaching beyond themselves to help those around them. Moving prose by award-winning author Doreen Rappaport is interwoven with Wilma's own words in this expertly researched biography, illustrated with warmth and vivacity by Linda Kukuk.

My Take on the Book
This is a great book that really opened my eyes to a woman that I did not know much about. I actually read this to my daughters and I am glad that I did as Wilma was a powerful woman that stood for equal rights and more. I loved reading this my daughters because even in their school district they do not spend a lot of time talking about what happened to Native Americans in the United States. Wilma's story is a powerful one that shows what one woman can do to impact her own people even when large obstacles were in her way. This is a powerful book that I am so happy to have been able to read with my own daughters. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with daughters but even more so to all as this woman is someone all should know.

Book Review - Secrets of Topsea: The Extremely High Tide!

Secrets of Topsea: The Extremely High Tide!

About the Book
Talise knows more about the ocean than any kid in Topsea. Any adult, too. As the best-and only-bathymetrist in Topsea, Talise is able to predict important things about the sea, like the next tide (Severely Low with a threat of Wildcard) or the arrival of Seaweed Season. What she can't predict, however, are her classmates' behaviors. Sometimes it's as if they're speaking different languages.

When Talise discovers a mysterious message in a bottle, her classmates believe it must have been sent by someone stranded on a deserted island. (Not to be confused with a dessert island.) But Talise is convinced the message is meant for her. And it's telling her to build a boat.

Everyone seems to think Talise is just being silly. Even Talise isn't exactly sure why she has to build the boat. And who keeps sending those strange bottled messages, anyway? All Talise knows is that she'd better finish building her boat fast, because an Extremely High Tide is coming?

My Take on the Book
If you loved the first Topsea novel that I reviewed earlier this year, you will also love this second book in the series. In this book Talise is back using her unique gifts to predict things about the sea, but what she cannot predict are the messages she keeps receiving that make her think that she needs to build a boat (even though she does not know why). She also continues to be challenged by her classmates about why she is trying to build a boat when they believe the messages say something completely different. This book continues to shows great characters that you will really love to get to know. Overall, this is a great second book in the series and we can't wait for the next book in the series!

Book Review - Hope

Hope

About the Book

As a family grows, so does its capacity for love, for dreams, and for hope. Two lions celebrate their grandchild and express all the ways this new life has expanded their world, and the hope they hold for his future.

A companion to Matthew Cordell's stunning Wish and Dream, this picturebook picks up with a new animal family celebrating their little one.

My Take on the Book
This was a beautiful book that really shows how life can and will change but just because life changes this only means that their world expands. The book looks at having a grandchild and what they does to a person's world, but more-so it shows the love that people can have for others.
