Book Review - You're Going to Survive

You're Going to Survive

About the Book
Life involves adversity: No matter what kind of career you’ve chosen, you’re going to deal with discouragement, frustration, and situations that are, shall we say, “less than ideal.” It could be a hysterical client who’s demanding a refund. Or a book that gets rejected…48 times and counting. Or a job interview that goes nowhere. Or watching your best friend get the exciting promotion that you wanted. Or a vicious one-star review that rattles your self-esteem and makes you question your talent, your identity, everything. When that moment arrives, open this book.

Defeat and getting through it: Inside, you’ll find inspiring true stories from all kinds of people—from authors, chefs, lawyers, website designers, and Broadway performers to personal stylists, jazz musicians, business consultants, non-profit fundraisers, and more—each describing one of the worst moments in their entire career, and how they got through it.

How to stay motivated and never give up: Each chapter is filled with honesty, humor, and heartfelt encouragement to help you stay motivated, keep marching, and never give up―even when things feel incredibly tough. No matter what’s going on in your career right now, this isn’t the end of your story. You’re going to survive.

My Take on the Book
This is a great read for anyone that is working through life and trying to better understand the what they can do to move up and also deal with rejection and more. The author does a great job at sharing content that everyone can relate to as well as a book that you will want to take notes on as you read page by page. One of the great things a bout the book is that the author validates the fears and self-talk that we all feel at least at one point in our lives (if not more). The book is one that pulls you in further into the book with every page that you read and I found that the tips that are offered in the book are tremendous and ones that you can put into action right away.

Learn how to get out of your own way: This shebang of a book is based on Loeber’s quirky personal life experiences that all started in the NYC 70s disco era. Justin worked as a waiter, a Wang Word Processing Operator, (remember Wang?), a substitute go-go dancer, was discovered by pop icon Gary Numan in London and was one step from stardom in his own right as a solo pop-recording artist―only to lose it all. Then, in a 180-degree turn―and without a college degree―went from a temp at Random House to an EVP at HarperCollins in a little more than a decade. In 2006 Loeber created mouth: digital + public relations, a boutique agency in NYC―repping over 550 clients to date.

My Take on the Book
This author really makes you think deeply about what you can do to change your life by getting out of the way. He criticizes but also encourages and offers great advice throughout the entire book. He challenges people of all ages to not hide behind the things that are easy to hide behind to be able to achieve what you hope to achieve in life. The book is honest and really makes you delve deep and uncover things that you might not want to uncover but in the end it really helps you to become better in many ways. There are personal anecdotes throughout the book that will make you laugh but which will also make you think about the connections into your own life too. The book both affirms and challenges and it will help people of all ages to be able to move your own life forward.

Book Review - A Self-Guided Workbook for Highly Effective Teens

A Self-Guided Workbook for Highly Effective Teens

About the Book

Sean Covey has helped countless teens make better decisions and improve their sense of self-worth.

A Self-Guided Workbook for Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey is a short, quick, and user friendly companion to the bestselling The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. This compact workbook provides the same engaging activities, interactives, and self-evaluations, but now it's graphically more engaging to help teens understand and apply the power of the Habits.

My Take on the Book
This is a great workbook that goes well with the Covey original book. Thus a teen does not have to only read the book and try and internalize the concepts, but this book takes the concepts and allows you to work through the concepts for yourself. The book was a great book that my own teen thought was easy enough to follow and allowed her to explore the book and learn as well.

Book Review - The College Bound Organizer

The College Bound Organizer: The Ultimate Guide to Successful College Applications

About the Book
College Bound Organizer is your step-by-step comprehensive guide to organize every step of the college application process from college search through college admission.

College admissions is tougher than ever: Between now and 2020, about 90 million high schoolers in the U.S. will try to get into college. And, nearly three million students are expected to enroll as first-time freshmen in degree-granting institutions in the United States this school year. Each of these students will apply to many schools ― five, 10, perhaps as many as 20 ― and each of those applications has a daunting number of T’s to cross and I’s to dot. With standardized test taking and school visits, the college application essay to write and forms to fill out, there is so much to do. Applying to college is intimidating and overwhelming for both teenagers and parents.
“Planning ahead and “getting there first” can do more than help students get into a good college ― it can provide them with life skills, a solid education, and lifelong friends.” – Business Insider
If you intend to be college bound: The challenge is to be well informed, prepared, focused and organized throughout the multi-step college search and admission process. Your solution is The College Bound Organizer, the ultimate guide to help students effectively navigate this very complicated and stressful process.
"Using The College Bound Organizer is one way to help you stay focused on what is really important."--Edward B. Fiske, bestselling author of Fiske Guide to Colleges
The College Bound Organizer helps students:
  • Understand what admission officers are looking for in an applicant
  • Prevent common mistakes students make on their applications
  • Build a personal profile
  • Plan an individualized testing schedule
  • Research colleges to identify schools that are a good fit
  • Develop a balanced list of schools
  • Secure letters of recommendation
  • Complete and submit applications accurately and on time
  • Develop the college application essay
  • Apply for financial aid and scholarships
  • Ace interviews
  • Sort through and manage application results
  • Make a final decision

My Take on the Book
As a college admissions professional I am always looking for new resources that I can recommend to people that are either supporting someone looking at attending college or someone that wishes to attend college themselves. This book is a great resource as it is very practical in nature and walks you through the steps that you must follow to be able to get into the college that you wish to attend. The book has a ton of great worksheets that are easy to follow and complete and by the end you have answered most of the important questions that you need to answer to make an informed decision. The book also has a ton of great tips that they share to help this process more streamlines and clear for all. The book is written for people that truly need it which makes the book such a valuable resource.

Book Review - Life in the Sloth Lane: Slow Down and Smell the Hibiscus

Life in the Sloth Lane: Slow Down and Smell the Hibiscus

About the Book

WHY ARE SLOTHS ALWAYS SMILING?

Perhaps it’s because they’ve mastered the art of taking it slow in a world whose frenzied pace is driving the rest of us crazy. Here, in a mindfulness book like no other, heart-tuggingly cute photographs of these always-chill creatures are paired with words of wisdom, all to inspire us to slow down, stop to enjoy the little things, and come up relaxed, centered, and smiling.

My Take on the Book
If you love sloths this book is for you. On every page you will find cute super cute sloths but also quotes that are definitely worth reading. You will also learn quite a bit about sloths as you read through the book which was also a ton of fun. While the book is full of quotes, I would have loved to have also seen more about sloths in general! This does not mean that the book is not great as it is! This book will definitely help you slow down and appreciate what's good in life and also why slowing down may even put a smile on your face too!

S'mores!: Gooey, Melty, Crunchy Riffs on the Campfire Classic

About the Book

Putting the more in s’mores!

While contemplating a traditional s’more, mad genius Dan Whalen, the recipe creator behind Tots!, asked a tasty question: What would happen if you kept the essential s’mores architecture—three layers of gooey, melty, and crunchy—but changed it up? The result? More than 50 playful, irresistible recipes that completely challenge the definition of a s’more. Riffs range from classic—Salted Caramel S’mores, Nutella S’mores, and Lemon Meringue S’mores—to crazy. Think Avocado S’mores, S’moresburgers, and the Elvis—bacon, banana, and peanut butter nirvana.

Enjoy your s’mores all year long! Every recipe is designed to be made in the broiler as well as over a campfire.

The book is easy to follow and the recipes are east as well. I did not have everything that I needed for all of the recipes, but I did have many of the items which made it even more fun to try them out. Now that it is the time of year when we are having more campfires, this book is perfect and as a family we are looking forward to trying out as many of the recipes as we can!
