Book Review - Rosita Valdez and the Giant Sea Turtle

About the Book
With more and more technological advances in education, are parents becoming too hands off in the rearing of their own children?

Robin Densmore Fuson offers an engaging solution to today’s busy parents in her latest book Rosita Valdez and the Giant Sea Turtle. By blending learning with imagination, Fuson encourages parents to become involved in teaching their children life lessons and wholesome values.

Through Fuson’s adventurous and brave main character, Rosita “Rosie” Valdez, kids learn the importance of:

  • morality
  • honesty
  • good character
  • hard work
  • family

“It will be a helpful resource for parents to become directly involved in their children’s education while also encouraging the children to explore new ideas through imagination,” Fuson said.

In Rosita Valdez and the Giant Sea Turtle, 8-year-old Rosie struggles with truthfulness as she encounters new experiences and adventures in a cove on the Pacific Ocean. Using her conscience and morals to guide her, Rosie becomes a key player when crisis comes ashore.

My Take on the Book
In this chapter book, Rosita or Rosie shows her dedication as a young girl to her family. She illustrates how important it is to be a responsible member of a family by performing her daily chores, completing her homework, and helping with her baby sister. Rosie shows her obedience and respect for her parents and grandparents.

In the story Rosie has a good imagination. She uses it with her grandmother in the attic while finding old clothes and in playing with her friends.

The story involves Rosie's friendship with a sea turtle she names Toby.

Unfortunately Toby appears to be shy and Rosie is the only one who can talk to him . No one believes her even when a baby whale is saved by Toby and the other sea turtles.

The author leaves you with the question: Is Toby real or imaginary?

What is real is Rosie's love for her family and telling the truth. You will need to be the judge about Toby and his existence in the life of Rosie.
