Book Review - God Theories

About the Book
Ken Ungerecht’s God Theories, 2nd Edition explores the concept of intelligent design, which, after emerging as a formal concept in the late 1980s, has remained unexplained and mysterious to many.  Although Ungerecht outlines various approaches to beliefs and worldviews by explaining the concept of intelligent design to readers, he gives a powerful example of how rational thought and modern thinking can be used to prove, rather than to disprove, the validity of religion.

Although there are several forms of the intelligent design theory, “the essence of each is that there are certain features of the universe and of living things that are best explained by an intelligent cause, not an ‘undirected process’ such as natural selection.”  The majority of the advocates of intelligent design are Christian; however, it is not limited to the Christian worldview.  Intelligent design exists in a kind of limbo between science and religion, becoming a “pseudoscience” that finds a happy medium between the two camps; “The consensus among the scientific community is that it is a pseudoscience because it also presupposes the existence of a divine, eternal, perfect, unchanging, and all-knowing creator; and this, they say, is not testable by their methods.”

Intelligent design uses both the Bible and mathematical examples, demonstrating infinite to near-infinite improbabilities, illustrating that much of the life existing in the world today could not possibly have arisen without an intelligent guidance.  The primary advocates of intelligent design are from the Discovery Institute, a politically conservative think tank, which seeks to “Teach the Controversy,” offering students a science and math-based approach to creationism, which will stimulate thought, discussion, opposing viewpoints, and, as the name suggests, controversy.

God Theories gives a comprehensive comparison of intelligent designers with other worldviews, as well as suggesting that they be given a role as one of the many schools of thought and faiths, and should be consulted with on an all-encompassing curriculum that would teach evolution alongside creationism, intelligent design, Native American beliefs, and the beliefs in origin from each of the major world religions.  Ken Ungerecht, like intelligent design, stimulates and provokes thought, showing readers a world in which science and religion can co-exist as equally viable viewpoints, demonstrating through the ideas of intelligent design, quantum physics, and other scientific methods the role of science in proving religious beliefs.


My Take on the Book
Ken Ungerecht asks "Is there a God?"

I  see the purpose of this book s one to encourage readers to have an honest examination and evaluation of the things they do believe about religion and spirituality and faith.

Ken defines four theories:

Do you believe in the creationist theory of origin? This is the story in the Bible of creation, in which God created the Earth and all its animals, plants, water, air, stars, planets,mountains, deserts, humans, etc.

Do you believe in the intelligent design theory ? The following defines this theory: there must be an underlying intelligent force behind the creation of the universe and world.

Do you believe in the evolutionary theory? This is the theory Darwin wrote about and the
Big Bang theory in within this also.

Or do you believe in the fourth theory of instinctively directed to consciously driver evolution which is similar to Darwin's theory.

Each of the theories is explained in this book.

The author uses the rest of the chapters to offer reflections, proof, and speculations. He takes each theory through the above explanations.Ken provides some mathematical charts where appropriate.

The last chapters include thoughts on God in the public schools and a discussion of the first amendment as it relates to the theories.

It is easy to see how reading this book can raise even more questions but also offer great discussions among those individuals who enjoy research of this kind.
