Book Review - Great Migrations Children's Book

About the Book
Great herds of zebra thundering across the African plain... fragile butterflies traveling unbelievable distances... family groups of whales coursing through the waves. Many kinds of animals make annual migrations, and their stories reveal incredible strength and will to survive. These treks are magnificently documented in Great Migrations, the children's illustrated companion to the 7-hour National Geographic television special of the same name.

Created for the huge audience of young animal lovers—and for the nation's schools, where migration is taught as part of the core curriculum—this book spotlights wild creatures of highest interest to children. Action-filled photo spreads have immense "wow" appeal as animals vault over obstacles and escape the clutches of predators. Info-graphic spreads pack in the fascinating facts, with at-a-glance information on where, why, and how animals migrate.

This timely book addresses the effect of climate change on animal migration, a story that is just now reaching the public from scientists and other experts who have witnessed alarming trends.

My Take on the BookFrom ocean to savanna, from cloud forest to saltwater lagoon, the planet is in motion. Animals everywhere migrate to survive driven by motives that vary from the need for speed to the need for food.

In order to live, animals must eat, drink, sleep, and give birth. But sometimes more that anything else, they must move. This book is filled with amazing facts from research gathered over three years. It will take you into the migration of eight animals.

I would like to tell you about a few of the animals included in this book:wildebeests, army ants, and jellyfish.

JELLYFISH: In the Pacific Ocean, between the continents of Asia and Australia, is an island called Mercherchar. On this island is a lake called Jellyfish Lake. About 12,000 years ago jellyfish were trapped in this salt water lagoon and isolated from the sea. In order to survive, each day the millions of Golden Jellyfish circle the lake just below the surface. They need the rays of the sun in order to keep the algae in their bodies alive. The algae convert sunlight into sugars for energy for the jellyfish. As long as there is sunlight, the algae will produce the food and the jellyfish will stay alive..

ARMY ANTS: Over one million army ants live in a cloudy rain forest in Costa Rica. The ants fan out from their home base heading in a different direction each night for three weeks. Together they attack anything in their path. The jellyfish are looking for food. These voracious eaters migrate to new locations when their current food sources disappear.

The ants live in colonies. Each and has a specific job. The queen ant lays over 14 million eggs during her life time. There are worker ants, soldier ants, hunter ants, and ants who take care of the young and queen.

WILDEBEESTS: Wildebeests need to be constantly on the move. They live on the savanna in Kenya and Tanzania. Lions, leopards, crocodiles, and hyenas feed on the moving herd. The best defense a wildebeests has is to run from a predator.
Over 1.4 million wildebeests travel over 1800 miles each year. They follow the seasonal rains to greener grasslands and water.Wildebeests would starve if they did not migrate.

This book is a perfect addition to your child's experience learning about animals of the world. Children have a natural curiosity about animals. I know you will find this book as fascinating as I did.

Enjoy!
