Book Review - The Night Before Christmas in Africa

About the Book

There is never snow at Christmas on the African plain. It is always hot and the riverbed is nothing but dust. Families sleep on floor mats waiting for Father Christmas, dreaming of relief from the heat. They have come to cherish the simple gifts he always brings. In this adaptation of the Clement C. Moore poem, the Shangaan tribe receives something much more precious than material goods. With a glossary and combination of African languages, this story shares how the true message of the season comes to every country and brings hope to all people.

As the celebration spreads across oceans and through cultures, people are drawn to its message of peace and goodwill towards men and readily adopt it, infusing the holiday with elements of their own customs.

My Take on the BookToo often we in the United States forget about the customs and traditions of others during this holiday season. This book does a wonderful job at opening a child's eyes about how people in Africa celebrate Christmas. It helps them understand the weather differences as well as how they eat and what their customs are. The book also does a great job at helping kids learn other foreign words!

My girls found the book fascinating and they liked the idea of learning more about other Christmas customs. The images were beautiful and drew in the readers eye.

After reading this book do not be surprised if you child starts wishing people iba nokisimusi omuhle (Happy Christmas to you) so be prepared!
