Book Review - NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC KIDS: JUMP INTO SCIENCE- ROCKS AND MINERALS

About the BookKids will gravitate to Steve Tomecek's humorously illustrated guide, which surveys the earth's astounding variety of rocks and minerals and the fascinating ways people have transformed them into usable materials. From talcum powder to silver jewelry, it all comes from inside this great big rock we live on. A high-interest topic for youngsters as well as an important segment of the elementary science curriculum, this book is in a kid-pleasing format and includes a bonus activity.

My Take on the Book
Rocks and minerals are all around us.
Minerals and rocks can do amazing things. For example they be bent , stretched, and squished. Others can be pushed up high to become mountains.
Often rocks preserve fossils of plants and animals that lived long ago. Those impressions help us to create a history of our plant..
Some rocks and minerals hold precious secrets like the diamonds, geods, and others beautiful stones.
Inside this book are colorful pages which will help your child identify rocks and minerals and learn how they are formed. There is an experiment at the conclusion of the book which allows you to explore making your own rock.
I would like to share some information from this book with you:
  • Geologists are scientists who study rocks.
  • Almost all rocks are made of minerals. Some have only one mineral and others have several minerals.
  • There are over 2500 different minerals on our planet.
  • Rocks were used to make arrowheads , tools, to build buildings, and to create jewelry.
  • There are three different kinds of rocks: igneous rocks are formed from hot liquid rock, metamorphic rock goes through changes due to the heating and squeezing of the rock, and sedimentary rock are the tiny rocks such as the grains we see, pebbles and mud.
This book has so many details and diagrams that explain the process of rock formation and gives specific locations where you could find the various rocks.
I know you will enjoy this book. The information is age appropriated for a young child whether they read or not. Maybe you will encourage a budding geologist in your family through sharing this book.
Enjoy!
