About the Movie
All her life Englishwoman Gladys Aylward (Ingrid Bergman) knew that China was the place where she belonged. Not qualified to be sent there as a missionary, Gladys works as a domestic to earn the money to send herself to a poor, remote village. There she eventually lives a full and happy life: running the inn, acting as "foot inspector", advising the local Mandarin and even winning the heart of mixed race Captain Lin Nan (Curt Jurgens). But Gladys discovers her real destiny when the country is invaded by Japan and the Chinese children need her to save their lives. Based on a true story.

My Take on the Movie
I was eager to watch this movie as I recall watching it years ago but could not remember all the specifics. The movie stars Ingrid Bergman, Curt Jurgens, and Robert Donat. It is based on the true story about a missionary named Gladys Alyward.

Gladys Alyward was working as a maid in China. Her kindness and love for the Chinese people and especially the children, gave her respect not only of the people but the local Mandarin leader and military. When the Japanese invaded China, Gladys decided she must save the children who had become orphans due to the war. She heroically led them across treacherous mountains with little food to a city of safety.

The actors play their parts well. You are convinced of their determination of their work and commitment to the Chinese. The scenery is beautiful.

If you enjoy movies from the past, with excellent acting, drama, and entertainment, I would highly recommend this movie.
