Book Review - Courageous Fathers of the Bible

About the Book
What do David, Noah, Abraham, Job, and Solomon have in common? One of their commonalities is that they are all significant father figures from the Bible. While some offer positive examples, others demonstrate the struggles that are faced. Either way, the men from biblical times present a unique and much needed lesson to fathers of today’s world—that fatherhood takes courage.

To share the stories of these biblical father figures, Concordia Publishing House has released a Bible study titled Courageous Fathers of the Bible. The 12-session study is written by Pastor Joel Biermann and can be purchased at cph.org.

The Courageous Fathers Bible study challenges and inspires men to become courageous fathers of faith.

“A child has only one father,” said Biermann. “When that child does not have a father who is investing in his work of fatherhood, the most tragic loss is often the failure to instill Christian faith into the next generation.”

Although the setting and subject matter faced during biblical times may be slightly different than those faced by today’s fathers, the stories speak to the needs of twenty-first-century men.

“These men are just like men today,” says Biermann. “They make mistakes, they sacrifice for their kids, and they strive to form their kids into the truth of God and His Word. Studying them provides surprising insight into the realities of raising children.”

In fact, as participants become more familiar with biblical fathers, they will find that the study questions and answers ultimately remind them that although fatherhood is a challenge and takes courage, they are not alone.

The fathers discussed in Courageous Fathers of the Bible include Adam, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, David, Job, Solomon, Joseph, Jairus, the Official, and the Prodigal’s Father.

“Giving careful contemplation to each of the twelve men who make up the study was quite an enjoyable experience, with some surprising discoveries,” said Biermann. “Focusing only on the fatherhood angle sheds a fresh light on each of the men. Every one of them provides thoughts and insights that are quite relevant.”

My Take on the Book
This was a great Bible Study for men! I have reviewed a number of books like this in the past and what I like most about this series is that it makes each of the men in the book that it is covering easy to understand and asks very relevant questions that makes the reader come to a better understanding of the men in the bible itself as well as a better understanding of themselves. The sections in the book were short and to the point, but even better though were the questions that followed as they all were great conversation starters and made you look inward to gather a better understanding that you then could share with others.
