About the Book
In “When Kids Need Meds” (ISBN 146647694X), Dr. Henry A. Paul describes the mental health issues that children and adolescents can face while offering informed guidance about psychiatric medication.
This book advises parents and other caretakers of children and teens on what to do when faced with giving their children psychiatric medications. Recently, there has been a huge increase of psychiatric prescriptions for young people, raising anxiety levels of the public. Paul addresses these anxieties as well as the misleading material that has saturated the public.
Paul discusses stimulant drugs, antidepressants, anti-psychotics, mood stabilizers, sleep medications and anti-anxiety medications. He also describes various mental health disorders, appropriate medications and possible side effects while emphasizing the usefulness of alternative therapies not involving medication.
Paul attempts to be as thorough as possible in his explanations by offering advice on such subjects as how to find a therapist and the types of therapy available. He also includes references if readers are interested in gathering more information than what he has provided.
As a practicing psychiatrist and psychoanalyst for more than three decades, Paul says that clarifying the inaccurate material was the main inspiration for writing “When Kids Need Meds.”
“There has been an explosion of prescribing psychiatric medication to children and teenagers over the last decade and an enormous amount of publicity,” Paul says. “Parents need a concise easy-to-use guide to consult when told that their child needs psychiatric medication. This book points out the essential details and discusses some of the controversies in the field.”
The friendly yet professional tone of the book offers parents a guide through the maze of information that comes with psychiatric medication. Paul offers his information in an up-to-date reference guide that includes everything a concerned parent needs to make informed decisions about a child’s care.

My Take on the Book
As a parent with a child taking meds, this book was an amazing resource that can help any parent with gaining a better understanding about the meds that kids can take for different issues and the side effects that can be caused. More than this though the book went through many of the psychological issues that kids can have and many of the important things that parents should be considering if either they think that their child may have, or if their child has been diagnosed with a certain psychological issue. I liked the section itself as well that went into alternative strategies for dealing with these psychological issues as well. There was so much in this book that I know that I will be coming back to read in the future, and you should too!
