The current co-host of ABC’s hit television show Dancing with the Stars, Burke is a mother of four and has established herself as an expert on “mommy” issues through a variety of platforms: as co-CEO and a popular blogger at the interactive online community ModernMom.com; as founder of the online retail store babooshbaby.com which features Tauts, Burke’s post-pregnancy belly wraps; as a “Mommy Correspondent” on the nationally syndicated daytime talk show The Doctors; and as a go-to celebrity mom expert on Twitter, where she has more than 1.8 million followers.
In THE NAKED MOM, Burke explores three major personas that characterize moms everywhere:
- The Woman: Mothers are always too willing to put everyone else first. But sometimes mothers should focus on themselves. Take the time to look and feel good and it will positively affect everything.
- The Mother: The word “mother” is easily the most revered word in the human language. Social pressures and the media have driven mothers to believe that they should be selfless. But with an absence of self comes a lack of passion. Mothers should empower themselves and instead strive to be self-aware.
- The Lover: Most women give up a lot to become mothers and often the lover aspect seems to be the first to go. Sexuality and motherhood are not mutually exclusive. Letting erotic fantasies play out gives mothers a needed break from the nature of motherhood. Moms need to learn how to set the mood, play out a fantasy, and reconnect with their mate.
If readers think that there is a simple step-by-step path to the Perfect Body, the Perfect Relationship, or the Perfect Career, Burke says they should think again. By sharing stories from her surprisingly ordinary life as a celebrity mom—from childhood memories to personal beauty tips to thoughts on her relationships and busy career—Brooke paints an honest picture of motherhood that all women can relate to and offers a workable approach to handling everyday emotional challenges.
THE NAKED MOM is a bold, honest, and empowering look at modern motherhood. As Burke explains, it’s not about right or wrong—it’s about being your best authentic, “naked” self.
My Take on the Book
Brooke Burke lays everything on the line in this book that gives the reader a true insight into her life, but also into her thoughts on what it takes to hold onto the multiple roles which is motherhood. I found her insights to be sound and even though I am not a woman, it was interested to hear her take on motherhood and the challenges in being a mother today. I shared this book with my wife and she agreed with many of the things that Brooke had to say and she stated that she felt that Brooke had hit it "spot on". The book was easy to read and I found that even as a man, I could relate to the experiences that she was sharing. I also have to say that one of the great things about the book were the personal stories and interludes that she shared with the reader as they were always very much appropriate for what she was talking about as well as insightful. On top of this she does portray herself as an ordinary person, which may be hard for some to comprehend as she is in the spotlight so much, but it is still good to see the reality of a celebrity lifestyle.
