Book Review - Miles Away...Worlds Apart

About the Book
Miles Away…Worlds Apart: Empowering Lessons Gleaned from the Experiences of a Whistleblower reveals the nitty-gritty details of the largest fraud executed in the history of South Florida. However, author and lawyer Alan Sakowitz is not your ordinary whistleblower. Sakowitz states, “It seemed to me that if Scott knew I was asking for an investigation into his Ponzi scheme, I had to be afraid of being murdered and I had to be concerned about being framed.”

Despite the potentially hazardous consequences, Alan exposed Scott Rothstein, the fraudster, to keep countless prospective investors from giving Rothstein their hard earned money—that they would never see again. Interestingly, Scott Rothstein had created an intricate web, where exposing him would be a daunting task. He knew people from all ways of life and was himself a member of credible institutions and organizations like the Governor’s Council.

From law enforcement to politicians, he had low friends in high places to keep his activities masked. The courage that Alan Sakowitz displays to simply help other people is exemplary and a direct antithesis of the corrupt culture of greed Scott Rothstein had created. Alan Sakowitz, by trade, is an attorney with an L.L.M. in Federal Taxation.

Located in Bay Islands, Florida, he is the president of Pointe Development Company, which focuses primarily on real estate development. Essentially, his position allows him to make optimum use of his education and knowledge of the law, as does his background in real estate.

Aside from his vocational ventures, Alan lives with his wife Leah and their five children in Miami Dade County. Coincidentally, this is the same neighborhood of honest, kind, and caring people Alan describes as he contrasts the world of good versus Rothstein’s greed-infested world.

Alan Sakowitz’s most impressive aspect is undoubtedly his character. Instead of being reeled in by Rothstein’s false bravado and outrageous, even unearthly promises, Sakowitz used his sound judgment and did his due diligence in investigating whether the man was legitimate or a crook in an honest man’s get-up.

In the words of former United States Attorney from the District of South Florida, Kendall Coffey, “Alan Sakowitz smelled a rat and kept his eyes on the rat while other investors focused on the cheese.” Alan and his lessons from Miles Away…Worlds Apart serve as a blueprint for today’s youth to follow and to alert them to the wiles of fraudsters who are, even at this moment, targeting innocent victims.

My Take on the Book
This book is one that will open your eyes to the greed and amazing things that people will do in today's society. The book itself was engaging, exciting and kept me on the edge of my seat. I usually am not a fast reader unless the book is a very good one, but this one kept me pushing forward and I was done before I knew it.
Through this book you get the picture of Bernie Madoff and what he did to take people's money. This book introduces you to such people yet again. The book looks at the good and bad of these people and of the situation in general.

Through this book the author shows his knowledge of the area. He writes with authority and you can read between the lines the passion that Sakowitz feels towards his story and this topic.

The book was definitely one that I would recommend to all!
