Oliver McCoy - The Vegetable Boy
Dr. Joelson believes that casting vegetables and fruits in a positive and appealing light for young children represents an unusual entry into the world of children's literature at a time when concerns about unhealthy eating and childhood obesity are high on our national agenda. Perhaps the Oliver McCoy series has the potential to contribute something of value to young children and their families at a time of such concern and focus on good nutrition. The 60 page fully illustrated book is written for children between ages 3-8 years old. A professionally recorded audio CD of Dr. Joelson reading the story is included with the book as well.
My Take on the Book
This book is a sequel to OLIVER McCOY: THE BOY WHO LOVED ONIONS
At the beginning of our story we find Oliver is still eating onions. However his parents convince him to try other vegetables and Oliver agrees to do this. When Oliver begins to eat other vegetables a whole new tasty world opens up to him.
Oliver begins to eat vegetables and make vegetable stews and soups. He convinces his friends to try vegetables too.
Oliver decided to grow his own vegetable garden. As he harvests his vegetables, he introduces his friends to the many ways that vegetables can be served. Soon his friends love vegetables too.
The book can be used as a springboard to introducing your children to various kinds of vegetables. Why not grow your own vegetable garden or visit a local farmers' market to learn about different vegetables. With your child/children locate vegetable recipes that sound delicious and prepare them together. This is one way you can help introduce to your child/children the joys of eating delicious healthy vegetables. It is also establishing a healthy eating habit they can take with them as they grow up and make their own eating choices.
