How to have Fantastic Style in 2011!

I wanted to pass along some glitz-centric tips and trends from Pam Kelly, National Director of Technical Salon Services for Fantastic Sams Hair Salons, one of the world’s largest full-service hair care franchises providing the same quality services as independent salons but at a fraction of the cost.

Holiday Hair
This year holiday hair styles point to chignons, twists and braids, but instead of a neat look, the deconstructed look is in.   Pam Kelly tells how to get the holiday look in 5 steps.

  • How to create a Chignon
    1. Hair is placed into a low ponytail at the base of the nape.
    2. Hair is then divided into two sections.
    3. Hair is then twisted in opposite directions and pinned into a low chignon.
    4. Tip: fantasticstyle™ firm hold gel can be raked through with fingers for more texture.
    5. Tip: to keep fly away hairs in place, use a small amount of fantasticstyle™ pomade on a toothbrush to smooth hairs in place.
  • How to create a Perfect Holiday Pony-Tail
    1. Shampoo and condition the hair. Unlike other updo’s, a perfect ponytail requires perfectly clean hair.
    2. Straight hair works best for ponytail, so blow dry the hair straight with a blow dryer. For naturally wavy or curly hair, apply fantasticstyle™ smoothing gel to damp strands.
    3. Left, right and center… decide on whether your guest wants to part her hair in the middle or if she would rather wear side pony tail.
    4. High or low ponies. Try experimenting with higher or lower ponytails to achieve different looks. High ponies are famous for providing women with “mini” facelifts by putting tension on the face and emphasizing on the cheekbones while low phonies tend to be more sophisticated, modern and sleeker style.
    5. Complete the look by spraying lightly with fantasticfinish™ finishing spray.

Trends 2011
As seen on the runways at NYC Fashion Week, hairstyles in 2011 will be a throw-back to the 1960s and 70s. What that translates to is hair with volume!   Yes, ladies, big is back and it is beautiful!  Pam also offers insights on other trends for the new year:

  • Multi-textured hair will also reign in 2011. Because fashion apparel is going 3-D, think of all the ruffles and full dresses/ skirts with volume at the bottom lengths, hair will also take on a 3-D look. Curls will be created by different size curling iron barrels so there is an explosion of waves. Crimping irons will make a comeback to provide a much textured look in hair.
  • And let’s not forget about the big bang! Deep full fringe bangs are in for 2011. Adding a full fringe to any haircut will update the look providing a modern and trendy feel.
  • Hair color will play off the Ombre’ color effects and root shading will remain popular. Ombre’ color effects is when the hair is highlighted from about 3 inches from the root area and gradually increases in lighter shades in the mid-shaft to the lightest color on the ends.
  • Root shading is when the natural root area is allowed to grow out or a darker color is intentionally place 1 to 2 inches from the scalp to give the “I’m too busy to do my hair look.” There is a growing group of fashionistas who prove that showing a little root can actually be tres chic as this technique allows less frequent retouches.
