DVD Review - WWE Power Series:Triple H

WWE Power Series:Triple H
 photo disclaimer2_zps8af35ac1.jpg

About the DVD
Get a ripped, buff body with this heart-pounding hard-core workout inspired by WWE training techniques, includes 4-week workout plan. Created by world-renowned coach Joe DeFranco and featuring exercises routine used by WWE Stars.

My Take on the DVD
WOW...this workout is one that will kick you to the curb. I tried it out myself and even though I see myself as a pretty fit guy, this one is definitely one that will wear you out (in a good way) and build you up to achieve the results that you want. Though I do not believe that I will ever look like Triple H, I can say that he does get you physically active and gets you working hard in this DVD too!

My Take on the Product
This new product is a great speaker that provides you with great sound for the size that it is. I was quite impressed with the overall clarity that came from the speaker all-together and at the same time it was easy to use and to install on my bike. The idea with this is to provide you with tunes while you are biking, and I for one see this as a great idea.

One issue that I had with this though did relate to the mounting brackets/clips that were included. I found that they did not hold as well as I would have liked and I was having to play with them, especially after a ride as they did not seem to hold consistently.

I found that the bluetooth technology in the speaker worked quite well and I was able to get the music that I wanted when I wanted it which was perfect and even when I was riding on different terrains the sound quality still remained solid.

What Come With This
  • NYNE NB-200 Bluetooth Soeaker
  • 3.5 mm AUX Audio Cable
  • Handlebar mounting system
  • Felt carrying bag
The speaker does not come with a regular power charger, but only a USB charger. You can purchase an adapter at most stores these days, but I would have preferred to have received this in the box myself.

One final thing to consider - the speaker is water resistant, but not waterproof. If you have this on your bike and are on a ride and it starts to rain, you will need to make sure that you get under cover, especially if you have it mounted to the bike as is typical. If I were to change anything about the speaker it would be to truly make it waterproof so that for any biking conditions you were covered!

Hoopdance Revolution: Mindfulness in Motion

About the Book
Hoopdance Revolution chronicles a cultural movement toward wellness. It combines the experiences of the exemplary people Jan Camp interviewed in her quest for the essence of Hoopdance at international events and through personal interaction. Having fun and being fully engaged with a challenging activity opens us to the possibility of entering a vivid, sensory world of healing and transformation. The hoop is a tool for play, physical focus, and spiritual meditation. Dancing with a hoop, spinning in spirals and drawing patterns in the space around the body intensifies the sharpens the intentions we hold in our hearts so that what we truly desire can come to pass.

About The Author:
Jan Camp is an artist and graphic designer with an active hoopdance practice. She has contributed to three books that inspired Hoopdance Revolution, A Door in the Swamp by Joell Jones and the Fish Arm Collective (Comix Press), and Cay Lang’s Taking the Leap (Chronicle Books). A resident of Berkeley, California, Jan studied art and writing at the College of Santa Fe, San Francisco State University, and University of Chicago. Her critically acclaimed work as a visual artist is represented in art galleries all over the States and gained her a residency at the MacDowell artist colony. Together with her husband, award-winning documentary filmmaker Tom Weidlinger, Jan Camp runs Arclight Books in the SF Bay Area, a grassroots publishing group dedicated bringing local artists and authors together to share resources and participate in events.

My Take on the Book
I did not know anything about Hoopdance before reading through this book. This book takes a newbie like myself and opens my eyes to the amazing array of health benefits of this. The book is full of images that show you how Hoopdance works and where it all started. The book was well organized and I have to say that I learned so much in the reading of this. I personally enjoyed reading some of the testimonials that were within this book which gave you a person view of what Hooping can do for you as a person. It was inspiring to see the physical and spiritual benefits that this can provide!

My Take on the DVD
This was a workout DVD that really got me sweating! I really liked the differing levels of challenge on this as it allows you - wherever you are starting to be able to either jump in completely or slowly. Realize though that this DVD will challenge you and will make you work for the outcomes that you want, but it is worth it. Also, the exercises were fun and varied which kept my interest as well.

I thought Chris Powell did a great job and if the results of some of the people using this DVD are any indication, you can definitely slim down by staying with the program and watching what you are eating.

I truly am enjoying this DVD and the exercises within, and recommend it to others as well as a great addition to your own workout!

DVD Review - Dancing With the Stars: Cardio Dance for Weight Loss

All opinions expressed in this review are my own and not influenced in any way by the company.  Any product claim, statistic, quote or other representation about a product or service should be verified with the manufacturer or provider. Please refer to this site's Disclaimer  for more information. I have been compensated or given a product free of charge, but that does not impact my views or opinions.

About the DVD
Dance Yourself Slim...No Partner Needed! You've seen celebrities shed pounds on ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" and now its your turn! Join professional dancers Kym Johnson and Mark Ballas for CARDIO DANCE FOR WEIGHT LOSS. Start dancing your way to a lean body with these three easy-to-follow routines based on the fat-burning moves from the show. Learn the basic dance steps in the Warm-Up and then really burn some calories with the sexy Samba, hip-shaking Salsa and high-energy Swing!

The Dancing with the Stars: Cardio Dance for Weight Loss DVD includes:

  • Warm-Up: Get ready to dance by learning the signature moves that make up the cardio workouts.
  • Samba: Boost your heart rate and blast calories with this rhythmical Brazilian dance routine that works your abs, thighs and butt.
  • Salsa: This Cuban dance focuses on a 1-2-3 rhythm to give you a full-body workout & a tight tummy.
  • Swing: This upbeat American dance combines the Jitter Bug, Lindy Hop, and Jive all in one for the ultimate leg work out.

My Take on the DVD
We have been fans of this series on television since the first season and my wife and I usually live vicariously through the dancers on the show as we cannot dance in anyway like them. Thus, when we were given the chance to try out this DVD we jumped at it.  The DVD states that it is for beginners and there are parts that seem to be geared toward this level of dancer (like my wife and I), but as the DVD progresses, the main instructors keep moving quickly, so you really have to watch fast to understand all of the moves. We loved the different dances you could work on and get better at. I think my favorite thus far is the jive and my wife's is the samba. One thing that was missing from this DVD was a cool down, so you will need to find a way to cool down after the exercise routine. Overall, this was quite enjoyable, and though fast at time, after a few times I found that I was catching on quickly. I would have to say that if I can do this, mostly anyone can!

DVD Review - The Biggest Loser Power X-Train

All opinions expressed in this review are my own and not influenced in any way by the company.  Any product claim, statistic, quote or other representation about a product or service should be verified with the manufacturer or provider. Please refer to this site's Disclaimer  for more information. I have been compensated or given a product free of charge, but that does not impact my views or opinions.

Shed pounds and burn mega calories with the Power X-Train regimen and you will feel better than ever. Take it up a notch with the fat-burning moves in 30-Day Power X-Train! You’ve seen contestants drop pounds on NBC’s hit series, “The Biggest Loser,” and now it’s your turn! Using cross-training and core movements, you’re going to shed unwanted pounds, burn maximum calories and tone and tighten your legs, abs and arms for a total body workout. Get ready to sweat with trainers Bob Harper and Dolvett Quince as they challenge every muscle in your body.

My Take on the DVD
This is not an easy routine, it will challenge you daily and make you really get back into shape in no time flat. I am the type of person that gets bored easily with DVD workouts, but this DVD and the episodes within it kept me engaged and motivated to keep coming back for more. I have been finding that even though I have been using this now for a few days I am still getting winded and tired after every workout (and I am not in the worst of shape). One of the things that I liked was that the videos are short, but pack a ton into the time that you have to workout. One other thing that I will add is that I used to use more intense workouts that were harder on my body and I find that I am getting just as much of a workout with this without the constant pressure on my body (which is a nice change).

My Take on the DVD
This is a workout DVD that really put me through the paces! Ab workouts are definitely something that I am always looking for as I get older, and this one did not disappoint. I do have to say that the first few times I did it, I was in a bit of pain afterward due to using muscle groups that I do not always use, but after that it started to get better and I started to see more definition (which is what I was hoping for). I am now using this along with a few other programs and it is a nice way to mix it up and bring in a workout that will challenge you and get you ready for the next phase in your workout routine.

Feeling Pretty Remarkable FPR Program

The FPR Program | Animated Introduction from COLLABORANS on Vimeo.

Do you believe you were meant to move freely without pain? FPR believes that movement can become your medicine if you have muscle and joint problems that just won't go away.

Research shows that you need to move to heal.

The healthcare professionals behind FPR are Chiropractors, Physical Therapists, Athletic Trainers, Medical Doctors and Educators. In August of 2011, with Dr. Kevin Jardine at the helm, they conceptualized FPR as a way to empower our patients to take control of their muscle and joint pain.

FPR created a series of instructional videos that feature exercises designed for people with muscle weakness and pain. When they initially gave their patients the FPR programs amazing things happened. They reported dramatic improvements in their pain and quality of life.

Feeling Pretty Remarkable...which is how you'll feel after participating in these programs.

One year later, the FPR programs have worked for thousands of people from the professional athlete to the chronic pain patient. They quickly realized that FPR is a powerful tool in the fight against pain. This was the true genesis of FPR. People experiencing muscle and joint pain need to be aware that there are ways to fight pain that go beyond taking painkillers. The specialized movements included in the FPR programs are the key to alter the way your body feels pain.

FPR gives you control over your pain by providing you with a set of easy to perform exercises that WILL make a difference. FPR will help you to remove pain from your life in the comfort of your home. If you are the type of person who likes to be in control of your own health, and you just need to be shown how, FPR can be your guide.

My Take on the Program
I was lucky enough to be able to try the FPR DVD program over the past week and it in doing this I have to say that I was completely amazed at how easy the exercises were but how far reaching the results were in only the week that I was using it. I tend to have lower back pain especially when I stand for long periods of time and in starting this program I was hoping that this would help with that pain. After a week on this program I find that I can stand longer and have far less pain than I have had in quite some time. Seeing this, I have to say that I am now a believer in the ability of this program to make substantial change to one's body. as I mentioned, the exercises were easy to start and sustain and are ones that anyone can do no matter what the age. For me, I have to say that I plan to continue with the DVDs to go through all of them and to continue getting positive results and if you have pain that you would like to address I would encourage you to try this program for yourself also.

4 Workouts at the Park

4 Workouts at the Park

Playgrounds are not just for kids, but also for those that are a “kid at heart.” Make the most of a calorie burn by having fun with the kids and getting a workout in! Your children will get a benefit by having fun with mom or dad and also by promoting to them that being fit is fun.

Tara Zimliki, founder of Tara’s Bootcamp, is no stranger to getting the whole family involved in her workouts. As a mom of two young daughters, she has perfected the art of making “fitness into funtime” with her children. Below are some of her favorite tips for those looking to maximize their time at the playground and have a workout at the park:

Simple Exercises for the Playground

  1. Use the Monkey Bars for chin ups or pull-ups, which will effectively tone your triceps, biceps, core and back.
  2. The Swingset is a perfect tool to use for stability and core exercises. Try a one-leg squat with one foot in the seat of the swing. Target your abs by sitting on the swing and leaning back about 45 degrees. Hold your legs straight out in front of you and cross them over one another in a “scissor”motion.
  3. Park Benches are not just for sitting! Target your shoulders and triceps with a bench dip. Place your hands on the edge of the bench seat and your feet angled in front of you. Lower yourself off the bench with your hands until your elbows are at about a 90-degree angle, and lift back up.
  4. Become a Jungle-Gym Jock. While your kids play on the jungle gym, use it to strengthen your arms with a standing push-up. The father back you stand from the gym, the harder the push-ups become.

How to Turn Your Stroller Into a Personal Gym

  1. Lunges and Squats are made more fun for kids by using their strollers for support or added resistance
  2. Running with a Stroller is no picnic, but Tara suggests ramping up your workout with intervals to make your routine go from boring to exciting for your kids

Book Review - Turbocharged

About the Book
TurboCharged By Dian Griesel, Ph.D. and Tom Griesel According to these boomer-generation authors, every diet to date is destined to deliver loss of lean muscle mass, moodiness, disappointment and failure. Instead, Dian and Tom provide an exciting new roadmap using a unique 8-step program that has been called "the Holy Grail of Fat Loss" and even the "Fountain of Youth."

Building on an exotic car metaphor, their system requires no strenuous exercise, supplements or special equipment. They show readers how to get on the road to eliminate excess body fat fast and forever.

Within 3 days the program promises to: begin training your body to use excess body fat for energy; show everyday activities that will quickly accelerate fat-loss; teach mini-exercises requiring only 3-5 minutes each day that will trigger fat-burning while strengthening muscle; explain the ideal foods and how to eat them to burn your body fat fast; eliminate any related diet anxiety or moodiness; prove that you are truly getting younger; and, provide easy ways to maintain your new lean and healthy body with minimal effort for life.

An excerpt from the Foreword by Fred Pescatore, MD, MPH, CCN, author of The Hampton's Diet says, "TurboCharged doesn't bog down the reader with lots of science. Instead, it tells you what to do, when to do it, and if you follow the very simple guidelines, you too will be dropping fat fast, leaning out and attaining your goal of a lower body-fat percentage, decreases in inches and a younger metabolic age. TurboCharged is a system designed with genetics in mind and based on sound science. With a combination like that, you can't fail." Sister and brother, Dian and Tom Griesel have spent the last 30 years working with renowned scientific researchers while studying health, exercise, longevity and stress management. Both are in their 50s according to the calendar, yet can prove that they are not only leaner and stronger but are now metabolically teenagers as a result of the TurboCharged steps they share with readers.

TurboCharged is a simple, practical, easy-to-implement holistic lifestyle program for everyone. Testimonials from 35 to 80 year olds abound! Early readers comment... Harvey Schiller, PhD., Brig. Gen, USAF, Ret, Former CEO, United States Olympic Committee says, "Finally you can toss the exercise DVDs, failed diet programs, useless equipment and take control of your body! TurboCharged is what we've all been waiting for: a simple approach to better living and a powerful new lifestyle." Harvard psychiatrist, Srini Pillay, MD, best-selling author of Life Unlocked says, "For dieters, from both a psychological and medical perspective--this one's the Holy Grail."

My Take on the Book
This book takes the idea of a diet in a different direction. While I have not dieted much, I will say that I enjoy trying my best to eat healthy. It is definitely not easy and you have to work hard to be able to do it, but this book lays out some very easy steps that all can follow to move one's eating habits into a much better path. This book is quite motivational and the ideas that the authors share were easy to comprehend, follow and implement into one's life. At the same time this book also shatters some of the myths and problems that one may have with the media's portrayal of nutrition today and what one must do to be able to stay healthy. This book was a blast of fresh air and it definitely is one that I would recommend to any and all that are looking for a new way to lose weight in the new year!

Legendary talk show host, Larry King, has put on his dancing shoes to boogie down with Angelina Ballerina™ and Nigel Lythgoe, the executive producer of “So You Think You Can Dance” and “American Idol,” in a new PSA that debuts in July celebrating the health benefits of dance. The PSA was produced by HIT Entertainment, one of the world's leading independent children's entertainment producers, and the Dizzy Feet Foundation, a national organization founded by Lythgoe, director/producer Adam Shankman, “Dancing with the Stars” judge Carrie Ann Inaba, and actress Katie Holmes, among others.  The Angelina Ballerina Stars of Tomorrow PSA will be part of the overall Dance 4 Your Life!, a new national health campaign that was recently launched by the Larry King Cardiac Foundation and the Dizzy Feet Foundation, and asks Americans to dance their way toward an active and healthy lifestyle.

“I had an incredible time talking with my friends Nigel Lythgoe and Angelina Ballerina about dancing your way to good health,” said Larry King.  “It is extremely important to spread the message of taking care of your heart.  And what better way than to encourage people of all ages to have fun, get up and dance your way to a healthier life!"

The PSA spotlights dancing as a heart-healthy form of exercise and features Lythgoe and King being interviewed by Angelina Ballerina (sporting Larry’s signature suspenders and eyeglasses) about the benefits of dance at any age. After the interview, King and Lythgoe join Angelina in a rousing dance number. The PSA will be featured in an online campaign and social media campaign that will encompass kid-targeted websites, including the official Angelina Ballerina website,www.angelinaballerina.com.

King is the founder of the Larry King Cardiac Foundation, which provides funding for life-saving cardiac procedures for individuals who, due to limited means and no insurance, would be otherwise unable to receive life saving treatment.

“The Angelina Ballerina Stars of Tomorrow program has been instrumental in encouraging young people to pursue their love of dance,” said Nigel Lythgoe. “Partnering with HIT Entertainment and Larry King, the Dizzy Feet Foundation continues to achieve its goal of promoting dance as a wonderful, healthy activity for people of all ages.”

In addition to the recently produced PSA, HIT’s Angelina Ballerina™ Stars of Tomorrow Program (AB Stars), in partnership with the Dizzy Feet Foundation, recently awarded scholarships to three dancers in the AB Stars program who have shown exceptional promise. From AB Stars dance programs hosted at the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club in New York City and the Brookhaven Boys & Girls Club in Atlanta, three young dancers each received a $2500 scholarship this past spring to continue their dance education.

“Through our PSAs and scholarship programs, the Angelina Ballerina Stars of Tomorrow program and the Dizzy Feet Foundation are reaching more and more youngsters who are embracing the power of dance,” said EJ Minor, Vice President, Marketing, HIT Entertainment. “We welcome Larry King as our newest ambassador to promote dance as a healthy form of exercise.”

The AB Stars program was inspired by Angelina Ballerina, a beloved publishing property created by Katherine Holabird and Helen Craig about a little mouse who works hard to reach her goals.  Kicking off last year, the AB Stars program helps raise awareness for the benefits of dance by providing classes to children.  Goals of the AB Stars program include helping to build confidence, inspiring creativity and promoting physical health, while making dance accessible to all children. Book Review - Stover

About the Book
Parents worried about issues such as childhood obesity, bullying and the amount of time children spend plugged in have a friend and ally in Kathy Brodsky, a psychotherapist, poet and author of uplifting children's books. Her new book Stover, about a fit pig who exercises and eats right, is full of "helping words" that gently promote conversations about the issues today facing children and families.

"I've been a clinical social worker for 40 years and about 10 years ago, I started to write," says the New Hampshire-based author and mom of two grown sons whose works are found at www.Helpingwords.com. "All of my books have these wonderful questions in the back of them that pertain to the messages and the story, and they lead to further discussion for parents, teachers, and kids."

It's no wonder schools have used Kathy's books for week-long lessons. And Stover, featuring an adorable pig intent on staying fit, continues the conversation-starting style that made Kathy's previous books, My Bent Tree (2008) and The Inside Story (2009), hits with kids, parents and teachers.

Little Stover, as envisioned by Kathy and drawn by acclaimed illustrator Cameron Bennett, is "the cutest little pig you've ever seen," Kathy says.

"He's a pig who goes to the gym and he eats in a healthy way. And in the back of the book, we have questions about being fit and eating healthy foods. I think it's the most exciting book I've ever done."

Kathy's philosophy of helping kids and families talk about tough topics through gentle, encouraging "helping words" is summed up on her website — "Live, Laugh, and Learn with Kathy Brodsky." My Bent Tree (based upon the loving support Kathy received from her mom during a childhood battle with polio), The Inside Story and The Winner Is... all gently and playfully teach that diversity is beautiful and each person is valuable. The open-ended questions Kathy poses at the end of each book help parents and kids talk about issues such as bullying, peer pressure, self-esteem and friendship.

Now Stover, a minor character in The Winner Is..., takes center stage. The persistent pig brings Kathy's passion for encouraging healthy family lifestyles into the mix as he shows that anyone – even a pig – can be healthy.

"I wanted to show with Stover that even if you're not skinny-skinny you can be fit and healthy," she says.

An animal lover whose previous book Just Sniffing Around focused on a family's love for their dog, Kathy made Stover a pig to showcase the achievements of underdogs everywhere. Choosing a returning character from a previous book gives kids a comforting reassurance too, she says.

"It's like putting on a comfortable pair of slippers. I think familiarity is something very important for people because we all feel more comfortable with things we're familiar with," she says.

Stover also continues one of Kathy's signature themes started in her first book (for adults) Moments in Our Lives (2004): Everything in life is connected.
"You never know where something can lead, and one thing leads to the next which leads to the next," she says.

My Take on the Book
Stover is a happy little pig. He enjoys playing in the mud, but then quickly cleans up and heads to the gym to exercise.

Stover is the epitome of a healthy lifestyle. He chooses nutritious food to eat for breakfast like oatmeal and fruit. Stover enjoys snacks which include vegetables, dried fruits, nuts and water.

As Stover enters the gym he encounters many friends. He uses  different kinds of equipment and participates in different classes to exercise. Stover hikes on the stair climber, races on a bicycle, uses a mat for yoga, runs on the treadmill, takes a step to use for aerobics class, and lastly Stover is on a swim team and swims laps.

Stover is a pig, but Stover is a fit pig. Through this story the author uses rhyme and helpful suggestions to encourage you and your child to choose a healthy way to live. Notice at the end of the story there are many good discussion questions.

This is a delightful book to share with a child. It is one that should lead to a discussion about exercise and how exercise can become a part of your life. Enjoy this story!
