My Take on the DVD
This was a workout DVD that really got me sweating! I really liked the differing levels of challenge on this as it allows you - wherever you are starting to be able to either jump in completely or slowly. Realize though that this DVD will challenge you and will make you work for the outcomes that you want, but it is worth it. Also, the exercises were fun and varied which kept my interest as well.

I thought Chris Powell did a great job and if the results of some of the people using this DVD are any indication, you can definitely slim down by staying with the program and watching what you are eating.

I truly am enjoying this DVD and the exercises within, and recommend it to others as well as a great addition to your own workout!

Whether you are new to The Digest Diet or looking to maintain your fabulous success, The Digest Diet Cookbook is all you need to get and stay healthy for life.

My Take on the Book
I made my first recipe from this look tonight and was quite impressed by the taste of the salmon that I made. The herb encrusted salmon that I did try was very tasty and very easy to make. If all of the recipes in this book was good tasting as this one I am truly looking forward to trying them myself. I is that the rest of the book was set up in such a way that you were able to develop your own 20 day program that will allow you to be able to maintain weight and lose weight if need be. There are even some great-looking desserts that were in the book, which I didn't think would be in a book like this. All-in-all in reading through this book I was very impressed with everything that was in it. I truly look forward to trying more of the recipes in the future and sharing them with my family.

More Extensive Steps Required to Battle Obesity in U.S., Experts Say

A recent study by University of North Carolina researchers examined whether doctors informed parents that their children were overweight. More accurately, it looked at whether or not parents remembered their doctor’s sharing this. The study analyzed government surveys of almost 5,000 parents of overweight children, and found that less than 25% of the parents recalled the doctor ever saying there was a problem.

“Even though being overweight or obese is becoming common in America, it is not a normal condition and should be easily recognized by an untrained eye,” say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new book TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH).

“Being obese or overweight is widely known to come with significant health risks as well as potential negative emotional conditions,” says Tom. “Fat kids are often ostracized by their peers and this can continue into adulthood. The time to address the condition is as early as possible with the education and introduction of healthy eating and lifestyle choices. Overweight children often have overweight parents and siblings who make it seem normal or perhaps somehow genetic. This belief is wrong. Nobody is destined to be obese or overweight.”

“As individuals, parents, health care providers and a society facing escalating chronic disease and the associated healthcare costs, we all need to assume responsibility for the problem and work together at improving the situation,” adds Dian. “We all need to do everything we can to make the necessary choices which will deliver optimal health for ourselves and our children. Eliminating sugar and sweeteners along with refined and processed foods and replacing them with natural whole foods alone would make an enormous difference. In addition, not smoking and being more active would practically eliminate the incidence of most chronic diseases we experience today.”

About TurboCharged:

Go Back to School with Karoun Dairies

A new study out of Madrid, Spain shows that low-glycemic foods, and moderately high-protein intake has been shown to reduce body weight and fat mass. [1] As obesity rates rise, so do metabolic disorders such as insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes often made worse by high sugar and excessive carbohydrate intake. Put aside the sugary snacks and make back to school healthy this fall with high-protein, all natural Karoun low-fat and non-fat yogurts that makes snacking delicious and healthful.

Reduce Weight
Reducing body weight and fat mass, not only helps to avoid detrimental health risks but it also has beneficial effects by lowering cholesterol, triglyceride concentrations and post-meal glucose curve. In other words, meals that contain protein keep the body’s systems in check and helps stabilize blood sugar. Take a bold step towards healthy kids with snacks and meals that include Karoun Dairies’ low-fat and non-fat yogurt. Irresistibly creamy, all natural and purely delicious, Karoun Dairies is a healthful and beneficial choice for after school snacks and as an addition to meals.

Boost Nutrients
If weight management and lower cholesterol isn’t enough, one serving of Karoun Dairies all natural yogurt has a significant source of potassium, phosphorous, riboflavin, iodine, zinc, and vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid). Yogurt also contains B12, which maintains red blood cells and helps keep the nervous system functioning properly. But perhaps the least touted benefit of yogurt is that it contains live cultures called probiotics – beneficial bacteria that lives in the digestive tract and helps build immunity by crowding out harmful microorganisms. Beneficial bacteria improve digestion thereby strengthening immunity to ward off fall colds.

Karoun Dairies adheres to centuries of yogurt making tradition, made at their state-of-the-art California facility strictly using only milk from cows that are free from growth hormones, BGH/rBST, and are Real California Milk certified. All natural ingredients and time-honored recipes make Karoun Dairies’ delicious and authentic low-fat and non-fat yogurt the perfect after-school choice for kids and families on the go.

Kelly Dorfman Interview

My Take on the Book
This book takes complex information for parents and makes it simple. The author does an amazing job at helping parents understand what their child should be eating and how this good food and other foods impact the body. Though I think of myself as health conscious, I learned a lot in this book and I know that other parents will as well! The book was easy to read and to understand and I loved the fact that the author used real life examples within the book to solidify her points.

This is a perfect book for any parent or for anyone that works with, or has children around them in their life. You will learn so much by reading this book!

Actress Marilu Henner Offers Unforgettable Advice for 2011

Millions of people will start diets on New Year’s Day, but many of those weight-loss plans won’t be healthy or sustainable. That’s why doctors and dietitians with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine are teaming up with fitness coach Bob Harper, actresses Alicia Silverstone and Ginnifer Goodwin, NBA champ John Salley, and best-selling author Daphne Oz to coach the 21-Day Vegan Kickstart.

The online program—going live Jan. 3 at www.21DayKickstart.org—will provide all the support dieters need to start 2011 by trying a healthy plant-based diet. There is no cost to join. The program launched on Jan. 1, 2010 and has guided more than 100,000 Kickstarters.

“Losing weight has never been easier,” says PCRM dietitian Susan Levin, M.S., R.D. “There is no need to count calories on a low-fat, vegan diet. Kickstarters can lose about a pound a week and many experience significant health benefits, including lower cholesterol and increased energy. This is a great program for anyone that wants to lose weight and maximize their health.”

Kickstarters will receive daily e-mails with recipes and cooking tips, a 21-day meal plan, an interactive vegan restaurant guide, and a free iPhone application. They’ll also get access to online videos and discussion boards featuring registered dietitians and physicians such as Neal Barnard, M.D., Dean Ornish, M.D., and John McDougall, M.D.

Celebrity diet counselors, including “Oprah” chef Tal Ronnen, best-selling authors Rory Freedman and Kathy Freston, actress Marilu Henner, and vegan firefighter Rip Esselstyn, will offer advice on food choices and grocery shopping, as well as personal stories about the challenges and benefits of new eating habits.

Adopting a vegan diet is surprisingly easy, according to a recent study in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association. Study participants lost weight, lowered their blood sugar, and reduced their need for medications used to treat diabetes and other health conditions. Other studies have found that vegan diets can lead to significant weight loss sustained over several years. Plant-based diets also reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Doctors Say Meatless Meals Crucial to School Lunch Reform

As Congress finalizes child nutrition reauthorization legislation, doctors with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) are urging lawmakers and President Obama to find additional ways to reduce fat and cholesterol in school lunches and give every child access to healthy vegetarian meals.
Meatless school lunch options were supported in H.R. 5504, the House of Representatives’ version of the Child Nutrition Act, but the House has set that bill aside to pass the stripped-down Senate legislation. The Senate bill does increase funding for schools to purchase healthier foods, but health advocates are disappointed that the bill does not go further. For example, the Senate bill leaves out provisions specifically promoting meatless meals and does not go far enough in supporting dairy alternatives.
“One in three kids is now overweight, but many schools are still struggling to serve healthy lunches,” says Neal Barnard, M.D., PCRM’s president. “Schools should offer low-fat vegetarian options every day, and Congress and the president should take additional steps to give schools the resources to make that feasible.”
Over the past three decades, the prevalence of severe obesity in children has tripled. The journal Health Affairs recently published a study finding that the cost of hospitalizing obese children nearly doubled between 1999 and 2005. Diet-related diseases are also increasingly common: One in three American children will now eventually develop diabetes, according to public health experts.
If a student is able to choose a plant-based vegetarian meal option even once a week, he or she could reap important benefits. A veggie burger, for example, is similar in protein content to a hamburger. But while the hamburger has 15 grams of fat, the veggie burger has only 5, and it contains no cholesterol, fewer calories, and more fiber.
Vegetarian school lunch options are supported by the American Medical Association, the American Public Health Association, and celebrity parents such as Tobey Maguire and basketball star John Salley.
