Give Dad His Garage Back This Father’s Day

As you're planning your Father’s Day coverage, we thought you would be interested to know more than half (59%) of men said their garages are so cluttered that their car can’t even fit, according to a recent home organization study conducted by California Closets.

In light of Father’s Day, California Closets would like to give dad exactly what he wants – His garage back! This year, instead of a tie or nose clippers, with a few simple tips from California Closets, moms and the kids can surprise dad by organizing the garage.

Included below are a few tips families can use to clean the garage for dad, or for dads to try on his own.
  1. Remove – If you want to really organize from the ground up, take everything out, take a good look at the space you have and start from there.
  2. Throw Out – Get rid of the old and damaged. Decide what items are no longer useful, damaged, or have missing pieces and dispose.
  3. Group Items By Category - This ensures things are easy to find.  Sample categories include sports and recreational, garbage and recycling, lawn and garden, hardware and home maintenance and tools.
  4. Measure your car – When everything is out of your garage, pull in your cars and mark the floor where your car ends on all sides. You now know how much room you have for storage and your car to fit.
Also, with the right garage storage solutions, dad’s garage can become an extension of the home and the perfect place for hobbies, crafts, a workshop, a home office…or even the car! For more information on this and to see Peter Walsh’s video tips on garage organization please visit: http://www.californiaclosets.com/node/43991

4 Steps to Raising a Future Writer

4 Steps to Raising a Future Writer
By Dr. Richard Gentry
Adapted from his new book, "Raising Confident Readers"

Lots of parents read aloud to their baby and toddler, but few take the next step: encouraging early writing. Did you know that babies can draw pictures (prewriting) and create narratives at between 2 and 3 years of age? A young child who is stimulated with targeted activities early and often can be writing and illustrating complex stories by age 4 or 5.

Why does this matter? Because studies show that when reading and writing is taught to children starting at birth, their neural pathways develop in different ways. They are more intelligent, have a 32-million-word advantage by kindergarten over children who did not get this exposure, and are less likely to develop learning problems such as dyslexia.

Over 30 years as an early childhood literacy, reading, and writing specialist, I have developed fun and simple activities parents can do with their babies and young children that help them develop writers' brains. They can be summed up in four easy-to-remember words in the acronym READ.

Repetition. Joyful repeated readings of favorite books are a hallmark of early reading and writing success. Long after you are exhausted rereading these favorite books, your baby or toddler will thrill in reading them over and over again. Babies love repetition, which encourages him to mimic the words and babble sounds -- early language responses. Over time, this mimicking behavior turns into higher-order concepts and understandings, and eventually memory "reading." Babies also mimic feelings during book sharing. If you read with feeling, it encourages your baby to have positive associations with reading.

Enthusiasm. Many experts agree that talking to your child and having frequent read-alouds, surrounded by talk about books during book sharing, are the most important brain-stimulation activities in parenting. You are activating her social, hearing, emotional, and linguistic systems all at once. The other E's in this step are Enticement, Exploration, Engagement, and Explosion. By enticing your child with fun reading activities, exploring new books, and engaging her in the process, her vocabulary, knowledge, and love of learning will explode. From birth to age 6 is when your baby's brain has the greatest ability to establish language proficiency.

Attention. When you read or write with your child, you are constantly making decisions about how to direct his attention. Since reading and writing are complex, at various times you must focus his attention to the many different aspects of language, reading, writing, or spelling. You are switching off between attention to sounds, meaning, rhythm or musicality of language, expression, feelings, letter naming, and letter formation, to name a few. The key is to do a variety of targeted reading and writing activities with your child that are appropriate and fun for his phase of development.

Drawing. Your child might be ready to scribble on paper long before you think she's able. Early scribbling is the precursor to early writing. With early marking and scribbling, she is showing an internal desire to communicate, joy in expressing ideas, and the urge to make meaning. Experts agree that drawing almost always opens the gate to early literacy. There are lots of fun and easy activities you can do with your toddler or preschooler to help her be an early writer.

Tips on Halloween Candy and Avoiding Tooth Decay

Tips on Halloween Candy and Avoiding Tooth Decay
By Dr. Margaret Mitchell
Kids love candy and Halloween is a great time to celebrate that love. However, what is a parent to do if they are worried about tooth decay from all this candy consumption? Candy usually contains sugar, which the bacteria that cause tooth decay dine on. So eating a food loaded with carbohydrate or sugar feeds the bacteria that cause tooth decay. Consequently, to avoid negative impacts from candy, we have to do two things: 1) Avoid excessive consumption of these sugary treats and 2) Lessen the amount of time the sugar is present in the mouth.
As the owner of Mitchell Dental Spa, a dental spa facility in Chicago’s Water Tower Place, I’d like to offer the following tips to for protecting your kids teeth at Halloween.
  • Examine your child’s candy to see if it meets your approval.
  • It is okay for your child to eat any candy that you approve of, but to help lessen the chance for tooth decay, have them brush as soon as possible (after eating the candy). If a child or adult brushes right after, the impact of the candy on the teeth is minimal.
  • Avoid sticky candy such as taffy, gummy bears, caramel, etc.  Sticky Candy adheres to teeth and causes decay
  • Kids can eat candy ANYTIME, there is not a good time of day/night to eat candy
  • Prior to Halloween, visit your dentist to have sealants put into the child’s teeth grooves
  • If brushing soon after eating is not possible, then try the following:
  • Consume the candy with a meal. The increased saliva production while eating will help wash the sweet off the teeth.
  • Rinse the mouth with water.
  • Chew a sugarless gum (especially those containing xylitol) after snacking on candy. The increased saliva from chewing will help wash the sugar off the teeth and xylitol gums help control the bacteria that cause tooth decay.
  • Eat the candy quickly in one sitting to decrease the amount of time it is contact with the teeth. Avoid eating any candy slowly over an extended time or over multiple sittings. Recent studies have shown that length of time eating a sweet can be more harmful than the amount of sweet consumed. This means hard candies, breath mints, etc. (long residence time in the mouth) can actually be worse for your teeth than a chocolate candy bar (shorter residence time in the mouth).
  • Avoid sugary sodas.  They are: 1) Loaded with sugar (often over 10 teaspoons per 12 ounce serving), 2) Are acidic enough to dissolve away tooth enamel, and 3) Are often sipped for long periods of time, resulting in teeth that are being bathed with sugar and acid almost continuously throughout the day.

Consumer Money Resource Bills.com Shares Tips for an All-Cash Holiday

Low consumer confidence and less than expected back-to-school spending are reliable indicators that consumers plan to be conservative with their wallets this holiday shopping season. To help those planning to shop on a budget, consumer money resource Bills.com today shared tips for an all-cash holiday shopping season.

“The holidays are a difficult time for those on a budget because they want to share in the season with loved ones, but they must also watch every dollar closely,” said Ethan Ewing, president of Bills.com. “The best way to avoid headaches this year is to plan for an all-cash holiday. It will leave you with no debt but plenty of holiday cheer.”

To begin saving for an all-cash holiday, Bills.com recommends a two-pronged approach:

1. Begin Saving Now:

Identify the ways in which you can reduce your monthly spending now to put money away towards your holiday budget later.

Dial back your cell phone plan:
By reducing your plan to the next tier of minutes or limiting the number of texts you send for the next three months you can save a substantial amount of money. Rely more on email or a landline for this short period while you save for the holidays.

Brown bag it:
Eating out every day for lunch can lead to big expenses. Packing a lunch at home uses a fraction of the dollars and can save hundreds of dollars over the next three months.

Grab office freebies:
For those in the know, the office provides some simple ways to save money every day. Drink free kitchen coffee instead of buying a latte or patronize the water cooler instead of buying a bottle of water.

Bike it or bus it:
Put the car in the garage for the next few months in favor of your bike or public transportation. In addition to saving money on gas and parking expenses, you could even get some extra exercise.

Cut the cord:
By opting for free online content or low dollar subscription services like Netflix instead of hefty monthly cable or satellite television bills, consumers can save hundreds of dollars between now and the holiday season.

A coupon lifestyle:
Break out the coupons to shave money off your grocery bill. Search online and in the newspaper for ways to find additional savings.

Find cheaper entertainment:
Consider Redbox for new DVD releases instead of heading to the movie theater. For avid readers, save the cost of a new book by visiting your local library.

Automate and forget it:
To make sure that this savings remains saved, open up an automatic savings account. Craft a budget to determine your potential savings and then have it automatically taken from your paycheck or checking account.

2. Shop Smart:

With cash in hand, you can use these strategies to better handle your holiday wish list, saving you time, money and stress to better enjoy the holiday season.

Make a list and set a budget:
List the people you plan to buy gifts for, the type of gifts you plan to buy, and how much you plan to spend. Include the cost of cash gifts, holiday travel, extra food, wrappings, decorations, greeting cards, and postage.

Buy early:
Avoid the holiday crush by shopping for gifts early. You’ll often find that they can be cheaper this far in advance and that hot gift items are still on the shelf.

Look for price-matching policies:
Some merchants will match, or even beat, a competitor’s prices. Talk to your local retailers to see if they can match or beat an online price.

Go online:
Take advantage of price comparison websites and mobile shopping applications. If you decide to buy from an online merchant, keep shipping costs and delivery time in mind.

Beware package deals:
Carefully consider bargain offers that are based on the purchase of additional merchandise (i.e. “Buy one, get one free” or “Free gift with purchase”). If you don’t need the extra item, it’s not a deal.

Layaway is new again:
Take advantage of store layaway plans. It’s an interest-free way to buy larger items this year and also make sure that the hot gift you want is still in stock.

Leave the credit card at home:
Now that you’ve saved up a large cash reserve and purchased most of your items already, be sure to leave the credit card at home for any last minute store visits. You’ll avoid temptation and stay on budget with only your debit card or checkbook.

Ship early:
If you’re sending gifts to out-of-towners, factor in extra time for shipping. If you wait until the last minute, you may pay a hefty price for express or overnight shipping.

“Plan to save now and shop smart for an all cash, no credit holiday that will help you avoid a holiday financial hangover,” continued Mr. Ewing.

Feng Shui Your Car for Summer Travel

Feng Shui Your Car for Summer Travel -Tips from ChicagoHealers.com
Practitioner Dr. Andie Pearson, DMD

Most of us spend lots of time in our cars.  Traffic, aggressive drivers,
crying children, phone calls from the boss, they are all bound to impact our
emotional state. The more clean and orderly your mode of transportation, the
easier it will be to get where you want to go. With summer driving season
right around the corner, ChicagoHealers.com Practitioner Dr. Pearson DMD
gives the following tips for using Feng Shui for your car:

  • Clear it Out - Before you leave, completely clean out the vehicle. Dispose of all trash, magazines, receipts, etc.  Vacuum the carpets and clean the windows to allow a clear view of your life's path.
  • Wash your Car - A dirty car will hinder the positive flow of chi and that could affect you as well as your driving abilities.
  • Go with the Flow - If you're prone to road rage, hang a round, faceted crystal from a blue ribbon. on your rearview mirror. This will add water energy to your car, making it easier to cope with frustrations like traffic, poorly marked roads and reckless drivers.  Don't have a crystal?  A bottle of water will do.
  • Planning is Everything - Once the car has been cleared and cleaned, plan your trip from start to finish so that you have all that you will need on the road and during your trip. This will include maps, addresses needed for a navigation device, along with all of the phone numbers.
  • You are What You Eat - Plan food and snacks and have them organized in the car where they are easily reached. If possible, assign a person to be in charge of snack retrieval on the road.
  • Easy Listening - Sing or play music when you enter the car to get rid of any negative energy. This will allow you to drive the rest of the day in a clean, refreshed space.
  • Exciting Entertainment - If there are little people or teens, have forms of entertainment good for travel available to make the trip smoother and less stressful.
  • Charge it Up - Don't forget charging devices for the gadgets of today (games, phones, etc.)

Mother's Day Made Easy: Seven Great Gifts the Mother in Your Life Will Love

Flowers and cards are nice, but if you really want to "wow" this Mother's Day, it's time to raise the bar. Image consultant Marla Tomazin takes the mystery out of your Mother's Day shopping with seven great gift ideas any mom is sure to love.

Each year, amidst the weather warming and the May flowers blooming, we take time to reflect on the women who have helped to shape our lives since the days we were born. With every diaper change, wiped-away tear, and goodnight kiss, our mothers dedicated their time and attention to taking care of us—so when Mother's Day rolls around this year, will you know what to give the moms in your life to say "thank you"? Worry no more—image consultant Marla Tomazin is here to help.

"If you think your wife or mother wants a new vacuum, blender, or washing machine for Mother's Day, think again," says Tomazin, who has been an image consultant for 20 years after earlier experience in the fashion industry. "To truly show your appreciation this Mother's Day, think about a gift that would really put a smile on her face. It is important to do a little research, pay attention, and watch for clues throughout the year. Every woman is an individual, and special attention should be paid when buying the right gift for Mom."
If you're looking to give a great gift this Mother's Day and you're still not sure where to start, Tomazin says the following seven gifts will be sure to make any mom feel the love this May:

Spoil her with a spa day. All moms deserve to be pampered, and a day at the spa is the perfect way for the deserving mother in your life to relax and rejuvenate. Tomazin says that a day at the spa can be tailored to include what she might enjoy the most. This can include a massage, facial, manicure, pedicure, haircut, and blowout. Moms spend their time taking good care of their families, so it's high time they get the chance to be taken care of too!
Good things really do come in small packages. No matter what the occasion, you can't go wrong with the gift of jewelry—and Mother's Day is no exception. Tomazin says that when chosen properly, jewelry is a lasting gift that will make the women on your list happy all year long. Unsure about a particular mom's jewelry style? Tomazin suggests going shopping with the mom in question and letting her try on a variety of pieces at different price points. Then take note of all the jewelry she loved and buy those pieces as gifts throughout the year.
Trade breakfast in bed for a bed and breakfast. Mother's Day is about showing the mother in your life that you love her, and there's no better way for husbands in particular to show the love than a weekend getaway. Plan a weekend for the two of you at a bed and breakfast, seaside resort, or destination that you know your wife will love. Tomazin says that this will give you a chance to renew the romance in your relationship and give your wife a chance to rest, relax, and enjoy herself. It's an unexpected gift for Mother's Day, and one she'll be certain to never forget.
Aim for activity. For moms who love a good workout, going to the gym can be a great way to get out of the house and have some time to themselves. And an hour of yoga and some time in the sauna can be just the rejuvenation a mom needs! If the lady on your list would love a session with a personal trainer, a gym membership, or some new yoga gear, Tomazin says that a gift certificate for any of those may be the perfect solution. This can give moms a chance to try the classes or training that they have been thinking about but have not had time to do.
Let her shop till she drops. It's no secret that most women love to shop, but for most moms a shopping spree means a trip to the grocery store or a day spent trying on new soccer cleats—not those cute peep toe pumps she's been eyeing for months. This Mother's Day Tomazin suggests giving the mom on your list the chance to do a little shopping for herself. If you know your wife or mother loves a special boutique or department store, consider getting her a gift certificate. And if you know that she has wanted a certain item at one of those stores, go ahead and purchase it for her.
Paint the town red. Sometimes, the best gifts don't come in a box or envelope. If you are looking for a special way to celebrate your wife this Mother's Day, Tomazin suggests planning for a special evening out. Depending on her personal taste, it could be a fancy dinner, going out for dancing, or even a casual dinner and movie, like old times. Arrange for a babysitter and make it a nice surprise for your wife. She will appreciate the opportunity to step out of her mom role for one night, and it will be a great way for the two of you to celebrate together.
Give her the gift of an image consultant. So often mothers put themselves on the back burner and spend their time taking care of others. A personal stylist or image consultant can help the mom in your life take the time to do the things for herself that she may not otherwise do. Tomazin says that image consultants and personal stylists can help a woman streamline her closet so that she can save time getting dressed, or they can help her determine the best colors and styles for her so that shopping will become much easier and less time-consuming. This will make her life less stressful and allow her to be more present with her family and friends—and she'll be thrilled by the way she looks and feels, too!
"The most important part of any gift is the sentiment behind it," Tomazin concludes. "The best Mother's Day gift is one that says you've paid attention, that you appreciate all your mother or wife does, and that you want to give back to her just a portion of the love and attention she has given to you and your family. Think about who she is and what she loves to do. If your gift takes those things into consideration, you'll be sure to give her something she'll love."

6 Tips for Saving Money While Preventing Car Problems

I wanted to introduce you to JustAnswer, a Web site connecting people to thousands of verified Experts in over 100 categories, because it’s the perfect resource for moms and dads that need to avoid finding themselves at odds with their vehicle. Auto Experts on JustAnswer are providing insight to drivers everywhere to help them not only save time and money on car maintenance, but also learn insider secrets about the dreaded auto shop.

Below you’ll find 6 tips that Eric Brock, an auto Expert on JustAnswer, finds himself offering up to JustAnswer users everyday.
1) Spend some quality time with the user’s manual. Getting to know the basics about your vehicle can prevent you from throwing money away on repairs. That knowledge also comes in handy if you’re in an emergency situation and have to do a quick DIY fix. For example, you should know how to check and fill all the fluids in your engine compartment because if you use the wrong transmission fluid, you will end up with a failed transmission that won’t be covered by your warranty.

2) Keep your receipts to keep your warranty intact. Keep a receipt for everything, whether it’s routine maintenance or supplies you bought for a DIY fix. In order for your warranty to cover a mechanical failure, you must keep accurate records to prove you’re not at fault.
3) Update your calendar with the recommended maintenance schedules.
Despite what you may think, recommended maintenance schedules don’t exist just to rip you off. They were created by the engineers who designed your vehicle and can save you tons of money. The number one reason for engine, transmission, transfer case, and rear differential failure is customer neglect.
4) Don’t ignore those warning lights.  Just like with maintenance schedules, warning lights and gauges aren’t there to dupe you. The second most common reason for drive train failure is that drivers ignore warning signs. Paying attention and responding to these warning signals can prevent a hefty garage bill. 5) Increase gas mileage by up to 15%. Maintaining proper tire pressure and changing your air filter and PCV valve every 7,500 miles will increase your gas mileage. You should also check behind your vehicle’s grill to keep the radiator and fan free of debris because that causes higher engine temperatures and poorer gas mileage.

6) Know the truth behind mechanics’ prices – and why they might be worth it. Shops have overhead that must be taken into account in order for them to remain profitable and stay in business. They charge more for parts that can easily be purchased at a parts store because mechanics offer a parts and labor warranty for the work, whereas you only get a parts warranty from a parts store. Typically, a shop must charge 2 to 2.75 times what they pay for a part just to achieve a 1% net profit for the job. The technicians only receive 20-25% of the charged hourly labor rate. So you can either pay less for the part at a parts store or head to the garage for the part plus expert problem diagnosis.

  4. Babies Move – Before you know it, your baby will be mobile and have their hands in everything. Set up safety rules at home for your family to follow around the stove, sink, bathtub and electronics. Baby-proofing cabinets, doors and gates is never a bad idea.
  5. Mistakes Happen - Don’t expect perfection. You’re going to make mistakes sometimes and that’s ok. Your baby will still be healthy and happy if you forget to turn on his or her light night one evening.
  6. Check-in on your insurance – Make sure your family is covered and prepared for the unexpected. Talk to your insurance agent to be sure your health, home and auto insurance include everything you need to keep you and your new addition covered.
  7. Take turns - You and your wife are a team – so don’t be afraid to pitch in with a late night feeding.
  8. Learn the different kinds of crying – Not yours, your baby’s. Pay attention to how your newborn’s cries may differ based on what they need and you’ll be more ready to help them.
  9. Trust your gut. As you care for your little one, don’t overthink and overcomplicate things. Giving into fears makes you doubt yourself, and after all the preparing you’ve done, you’re definitely ready to be a new parent. Trust yourself – you can do it!
  10. Enjoy yourself – Take the time to enjoy your new baby and being a Dad. There will be a big learning curve and some challenges along the way, be sure to stop along the way and enjoy the time with your baby, it goes fast!
