Freshpet Offers Tips for Helping Pets Slim Down in the New Year!

As the holidays wind down many people start worrying about how they are going to shed those pesky holiday pounds in the New Year. Just like humans, pets also tend to gain weight over the holidays from all the extra goodies given to them by well-intentioned family members. In fact, according to a study by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, on average dogs gain 0.3 pounds and cats gain 0.4 pounds during the holidays, which is equivalent to 5 to 7 pounds for a person. Unfortunately, pets cannot choose to diet and exercise on their own, that’s why Freshpet, the only company making fresh, refrigerated food for pets made in the USA, has teamed up with pet nutrition expert and 12+ year practicing veterinarian Dr. Katy Nelson to offer tips on how you can help your pet battle the bulge:

1. Check your pet’s weight regularly. You can check your pet’s weight at home by gently running your fingers along their rib cage. At a healthy weight, their ribs should be felt easily and have a thin, silky layer of skin moving over them as opposed to large chunks of fat. If you feel your pet is over weight, make an appointment with your vet to discuss an appropriate action plan. Just remember, when making any changes to your pet’s diet it’s best to do so slowly to avoid gastrointestinal upset.
2. Portion control. Pet obesity is largely due to the overconsumption of commercial food and treats. Feeding guidelines are usually based on a “healthy adult pet” and one size does not fit all. There are many factors used to determine how many calories your pet needs, like life stage, reproductive status, physical activity, and disease conditions, so be sure to speak with your vet to determine what daily caloric intake is right for your pet. And don’t forget to factor in the calories consumed from treats.
3. Read labels. Cats and dogs are natural carnivores and thrive on fresh, meat-based diets. Many traditional shelf-stable pet foods are carbohydrate-based and contain fillers like corn, wheat and soy, which are harder for your pet to digest. Instead, look for all natural food that has meat as the #1 ingredient like Vital Beef & Bison or Freshpet Select Chunky Chicken & Turkey slice & serve rolls. A protein-dense food will also help your pet stay fuller longer and provide longer-lasting energy.
4. Avoid table scraps. Human food is not appropriate for household pets in most instances. My Take on the Product
If you are looking for a healthy, great tasting snack that you and your whole family will enjoy, look no further. What I loved about this snack is as a parent you can have peace of mind that you are giving your kids healthy snacks that are great tasting. On top of this the fruit is all natural, and even though it tastes sweet, you will know that you are giving your children something healthy and you will be amazed that they will be asking for more even after the first snack bowl that you offer! Nudo Extra Virgin Olive Oil Makes a Huge Difference in Cooking

About the Olive Oil
If you could take an Italian olive grove and squeeze it into a tin, the result would be Nudo olive oil. All the flavour and freshness of 100% Italian olives and even the same gentle joyous, pastoral feeling.

Nudo Olive Oil is all extra virgin and cold pressed (to maximise quality, taste and health-giving properties) and the olives are pressed within hours of being picked. Simple rules to produce a flavor that’s as fresh as a daisy. All the best olive oil is ‘extra virgin’ and ‘first cold press’. There is sometimes confusion about this terminology. ‘Extra virgin’ means the oil has the lowest possible acidity (less than 0.8%) and the highest proportion of polyphenols which are the anti-oxidants so beneficial to health. It is the highest grade oil with the best flavour. ‘First cold press’ refers to the way the olives are treated at the mill; in first cold press, this means using no heat (which extracts more oil of a lower quality) and using only the oil from the first press. Many olive oil producers will re-press the olive paste from the first press to make a lower grade oil. Nudo never does this.

My Take on the Olive Oil
This Olive Oil was so different than what you usually will find in the grocery stores. The taste was so fresh and you can tell that what you are getting is of much higher quality than you usually get. I also appreciated the fresh date stamped on the can, as I don't always find these when looking at general Olive Oil that you find at your local grocery store, so I cannot say that I know whether what I am buying is of high quality or not. The flavor itself was great and it made the food that I was using it for taste great as well. All-in-all I was very impressed and if you love cooking with Olive Oil, you will be impressed as well!

My Take on the Products

My Take on the Products
I am always the type of person that is looking for products that will help me live a healthier life. In trying out these products I was very impressed by the ease in which they could be incorporated into my lifestyle. Especially the flax seed that was already ground up, I could mix it in my daily smoothie or add it onto cottage cheese or in yogurt at lunch. The coconut oil was great to use with our Amish popcorn popper that we use to make popcorn, as it is much healthier and gives the popcorn a unique flavor that the whole family seemed to enjoy! There are so many great health benefits to eating flax seed, so if you too are trying to incorporate healthy food into your daily routine, I highly recommend the flax seed that Carrington provides. Also, using the coconut oil is much healthier altogether but allows you to still have the same properties that you would get  with other oils.

My Take on the Product
As a parent I am always looking for ways to give my kids snacks that are healthy and filling. On top of this as any parent knows your kids will demand variety (or at least my kids do). You can probably guess that I and my kids have tried our fill of granola bars over the years and some have been good, while others are sub-par. More and more I have been finding granola bars that are more dessert bar than granola with a large amount of the nutrients depleted because of processing.

My Take on the Food
This has to be some of the best tasting granola that I have ever tasted! I have tried a lot, and so many are dry and flavorless. The two varieties that I tried not only exploded with flavor, but it was fresh tasting, crisp and not dry tasting in the least. I also have to say that I loved reading the story of the company, as it is definitely a story that you will want to share with others and shows you that if you have a dream for a healthier family you can make it happen and you can get other families to also want to follow your leadership. I highly encourage everyone to try this great granola, as once you do, you may never go back to your old granola again!

New Online Community Foodiacs.com shares exclusive offerings for those passionate about food

The newest online community for food enthusiasts www.foodiacs.com announces its September 6 website launch. Foodiacs is tailored to people who are passionate about food and will connect them with product offerings that are exclusive to the site. Each Foodiacs offering will be available for only a limited time, and at a limited quantity, and will not match any offer at any other online retail outlet.

“We recognize the quality and passion that goes into creating these artisan foods and want to bring lesser known but high quality items to the forefront of the food community in a unique way,” said Katie Clegg, chief eating officer of Foodiacs.com. “Foodiacs is about helping companies get recognition for innovation and outstanding ingenuity – but more importantly it’s about connecting consumers, who are Foodiacs like us, to gourmet food artisans, epicurean products, specialty kitchen equipment and, ultimately, new experiences they’ll love.”

Foodiacs has exclusive product offerings, or events, booked through March 2012. The events will launch every one to two weeks on Tuesdays at 12 p.m. and will feature a variety of unique food-related products. Starting in 2012, the site will also connect “Foodiacs” with local food industry leaders for exclusive tastings, culinary tours and educational experiences.

The first event to be featured is Back to the Roots, a grow-it-yourself box garden of pearl oyster mushrooms. The event will run from September 6 at 12:00 p.m. ET - September 20 at 11:59 a.m. ET. Each “Foodiac” that purchases two boxes will receive a third box and classroom curriculum to be donated to the school of their choice.

The site is currently in beta form until September 6. Interested food enthusiasts can sign-up to receive news, events and product offerings via email.

My Take on the Products
I was quite impressed with this snack mix. Full of great energy boosting items, this mix provides the perfect pick-me-up whether you are out on the trail, or sitting in your office. I particularly enjoyed the dried fruit that was in the mix, as I am always interested in being health with fruits. In saying this though the nuts were great as usual!

 My Take on the Product
Naturally sweet, full of fiber and great tasting these prunes will make you ask for seconds. I was impressed with the overall flavor and at how filling they were. You only need to eat a few to feel satisfactorily full...unlike many snack foods. I think that prunes sometimes get a bad wrap, but they truly are delicious and I would definitely highly recommend them for anyone in the family. I mean, who can argue with great tasting and healthy?

Product Review - HINT Water

HINT water (http://www.drinkhint.com/) is another great way to get healthy between the sugar rush of Halloween and the holiday season.

My Take on the Product HINT water is both refreshing and tastes wonderful. It was slightly sweetened, but made me completely feel refreshed. I also shared this with my daughters and both said how much they liked it as well.

I have quite a sweet tooth and try my best to control this, but this drink with only natural sugars was great to quench the sweet tooth that I enjoy. The water itself was nice as it did have *just a hint* of fruit flavor. The flavor was not overpowering, and it made my water drinking just a bit more exciting.

I recommend that you try this! It is worth the price and a nice healthy treat.
