Book Review - Live Second: 365 Ways to Make Jesus First

About the Book
Athletes and actors, models and musicians, pastors and politicians … many have stepped forward, looked in the camera, and proclaimed, “I am second.” But most in the I Am Second movement are not celebrities. They are ordinary people—and they’ve come to the simple realization that when God comes first in their lives, everything makes sense.

But living second is not easy. It takes grit and humility, submission to God’s will, a willingness to listen and serve, an openness to God’s healing and call.

Live Second is a daily guide to help you. With 365 readings, prayers, actions steps, and an invitation to join other Christ-followers online, what you hold in your hands is a tool built with truth, scripture, and a sure path to put Jesus first every day.

The Christian life is not meant to be easy, just worth it. Live Second is exactly what you need as you become the new, inspired, God-honoring creation he made you to be.

About the Author
Doug Bender is an I Am Second writer and small groups coach. He spends his time developing many of the small group tools found at iamsecond.com and coaching churches, organizations, and individuals to use I Am Second groups to share the message of Jesus with their friends and family. He also works with I Am Second’s parent organization, e3 Partners, as a church planter in countries like Ethiopia and Indonesia. Doug is married to Catherine and has a one-year-old baby, Bethany.

My Take on the Book
If you have ever wondered how you could bring yourself closer to God, but come up empty this book will help refill you body and soul. Each day this book provides the reader with some great things to think about personally to help you come closer to God. Each day you are given a passage to read and ways in which you can talk to God about the issues that you may be dealing with in regards to the topic. The book is easy to read and engaging to read. I loved the QR codes that will take you to video clips that deal with the same topic in which they are found and all reflect real people with real concerns and issues that you can relate to completely (or at least I did). This was a powerful book, and though I am only a little of the way through I can already tell that this is going to be something that I will continue to follow day after day!

Walt Disney Animation Studios names Jennifer Lee as Director of FROZEN!

Walt Disney Animation Studios (WDAS) taps Jennifer Lee to join Chris Buck at the helm of its 53rd full-length animated feature “Frozen,” which is slated for the big screen on Nov. 27, 2013. Lee, who has contributed to the film’s screenplay, is one of the screenplay writers of this year’s hit arcade-hopping adventure “Wreck-It Ralph.”

Featuring the voices of Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel, “Frozen” is the coolest comedy-adventure ever to hit the big screen. When a prophecy traps a kingdom in eternal winter, Anna, a fearless optimist, teams up with extreme mountain man Kristoff and his sidekick reindeer Sven on an epic journey to find Anna’s sister Elsa, the Snow Queen, and put an end to her icy spell. Encountering mystical trolls, a funny snowman named Olaf, Everest-like extremes and magic at every turn, Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom from destruction.

“Frozen” producer Peter Del Vecho says the match-up is perfect. “Jenn has a real connection to the film and creates dynamic and relatable characters. Her sense of comedy, adventure and story structure paired with Chris Buck’s vast experience and incredible instincts create an ideal situation for this film.”

Lee's screen adaptation of John Steinbeck’s “The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights” is being produced by Troika Pictures. She has an original screenplay in development with Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way, and her original script “Lucid Dreams” was optioned by Wolfgang Peterson's Radiant Productions. Lee holds an MFA in Film from Columbia University and a BA in English from the University of New Hampshire.

Buck directed (with Kevin Lima) Disney’s 1999 high-swinging feature “Tarzan,” which won an Oscar® and a Golden Globe® for Best Music/Original Song (Phil Collins’ “You’ll Be in My Heart”). He directed (with Ash Brannon) 2007’s Oscar-nominated “Surf’s Up” for Sony Pictures Animation. His credits within animation also include 1989’s “The Little Mermaid,” “The Rescuers Down Under” (1990) and “Pocahontas” (1995).

With original songs by Tony®-award winner Robert Lopez (“The Book of Mormon,” “Avenue Q”) and Kristen Anderson-Lopez (“In Transit”), “Frozen” journeys into theaters Nov. 27, 2013, in Disney Digital 3D™ in select theaters. Book Review - Draw Plus Science

About the Book
Children learn with all their senses. This book is designed to help your child or student enhance science learning and literacy and discover the world around them through art activities in a fun way.

With an emphasis on observation and information, these drawing lessons are based on concepts which include Classification, Measuring and Recording, Life Cycles, Seasons, Variety in Nature, Climate, Adaptations, Inherited Traits, and Characteristics of Organisms.

Freddie Levin has been interested in the place where art and science meet since she began studying botanical illustration at the Chicago Botanic Gardens. She can often be found in her sunny studio happily painting the native wildflowers of Illinois.

My Take on the Book
If you have a child who loves to draw, learn scientific facts, and read, I highly recommend this book. It has excellent factual information about animals , plants and scientists. It has step by step drawing instructions for many plants and animals too. The instructions by the author are easy to read and follow.

Freddie Levin included information about famous people like Darwin and his fascination for finches and other birds. You will learn about Carl Linnaeus who created a system for classifying and naming all living things. These are just two examples of the people Freddie included in this book.

If you decide to choose this book, I would encourage you to include drawing pencils and erasers, lots of paper, and a nice folder for your young artist to store their work.

Book Review - Bold As Love

About the Book
People often think of their neighbors as those already belonging to their “tribe” or community. It’s safe, it’s easy, and it doesn’t often cause conflict—politically or religiously. But in today’s world, everyone and everything is interconnected globally in an ever-changing cultural landscape, while religious strife runs rampant. Is it feasible for Christians to live their faith boldly and lovingly while entering into a true relationship with “neighbors” of other faiths, both locally and globally?

In Bold as Love, Pastor Bob Roberts shows you what it looks like to live out your faith daily in the global public square among people of other faiths—Jews, Muslims, atheists, Hindus, Buddhists. While he admits that it can be challenging to engage people of other faiths whose beliefs are as strong as yours, he demonstrates how to enter into this critical dialogue in a radical yet loving way. “We have to learn to speak with one conversation and give the same message everywhere to everyone,” he says. “We are commanded to love God and love others. And sometimes that requires risky boldness.”

Roberts invites you to respond to this call to live a life of fearless and loving engagement with the world. So take the risk! Your faith wasn’t made to live in isolation. It’s something you do face-to-face, heart-to-heart, hand-to-hand. Whether you are in a suburb of Houston or a village in India, put away the fear and suspicion and, instead, answer the call to radically love others the way God loves. And get ready to see your life and the lives of those you touch—your family, your community, even your enemies—transformed!

My Take on the Book
This is the type of book that will really challenge you and your beliefs and will bring you into a closer relationship with God. The book teaches you that all things are possible with God's assistance and through touching stories the book shows how the through the multifaith relationships that the author has developed he has learned not only more about himself, but about his own relationship with his God. This was a truthful, open and honest story that all will learn from, and you will find your eyes being opened to the reality and beauty of the differences that people of faith can have and how these differences can being us closer together.
