Book Review - Clifford's Best Friend

About the Book
It only takes a little to BE BIG!

Everyone knows all about Clifford the Big Red Dog, but this story is about Emilly Elizabeth--the big red dog's best friend. See what it's like to spend a day in her shoes and rest assured it's anything but ordinary!

The BE BIG campaign invites everyone, big and small, to take action and raise awareness for how CLIFFORD'S BIG IDEAS can make the world a better place.

About the Author
Norman Bridwell is the author and illustrator of numerous children's books, including the beloved Clifford series, which has over 126 million copies in print, in 13 languages! He lives in Edgartown, MA with his wife Norma. They have two children, son, Tim, and daughter, Emily Elizabeth.

My Take on the Book
As I read this book , I felt it was a good book to introduce the Clifford books to your young child. Norman Bridwell introduces the reader to Emily Elizabeth and her big red dog, Clifford..

You have a chance to read through a day in their lives. You see the normal everyday activities plus the fun they have together. You will see the love they have for each other. If your child has a pet, they will identify with Emily and Elizabeth on that level also.

I recommend you introduce your child to the Clifford books using a book such as this one. You will find yourself locating more Clifford books to read and enjoy.

Book Review - Clifford's Christmas

About the Book

It only takes a little to BE BIG!

It's Christmas time for Emily Elizabeth and Clifford! While they count down the days to their favorite holiday, Clifford makes a snowman, gets a tree, and finds a surprise in his stocking.

The BE BIG campaign invites everyone, big and small, to take action and raise awareness for how CLIFFORD'S BIG IDEAS can make the world a better place.

My Take on the Book
There are so many wonderful Clifford books written by Norman Bridwell. This is a specific holiday reading which you and your young reader will enjoy.

It illustrates the common events in the life a large red dog named Clifford. You will see the love he has for his owner, Emily Elizabeth, and notice Clifford's generosity to others.

I especially enjoyed the section in which Santa fell into Clifford's stocking. The toys were ruined but Clifford saved the day. He gave Santa his gifts to use . The combination of Clifford's gifts and Santa's magic insured the children received their Christmas gifts.

Any child who loves Clifford stories will also enjoy this holiday story.

Book Review - Curious Creatures

About the Book

In his children's picture book CURIOUS CRITTERS (November 2011, Wild Iris Publishing, hardcover, ages 4-8) photographer David FitzSimmons turns his camera on a variety of animals common throughout North America. CURIOUS CRITTERS presents stunning images of everyday animals, including a red flat bark beetle, an Eastern spiny softshell turtle, a spotted salamander, and many other intriguing creatures. Each Curious Critter is photographed against a white backdrop, showcasing the animals' colors, textures, and shapes with precision and clarity. Along with each photo is a vignette, told from the critter's perspective, that educates and entertains. For example, a bush katydid explains her bubblegum-pink color, a poetic opossum opines upon her often-shortened name, and a far-from-modest black swallowtail butterfly lets readers in on her secret for avoiding predators.

When parents read CURIOUS CRITTERS with their kids not only will they have fun reading, but they also inspire in them a life-long interest in nature. Kids will want to swap TV and video games for a trips to the park or more time in the backyard. So, get ready to have a budding biologist on your hands!

Just some of what kids will learn:
What turtles and humans have in common
Why black swallowtail butterflies impersonates their toxic cousins
How Eastern box turtles can live longer than humans (over 150 years!)
If squirrels can fly
Why crayfish grow new legs
How bats find food
Why frogs sing
How jumping spiders jump and why they never have to look over their shoulders.

My Take on the Book

You will definitely enjoy this book which is full of amazing close up photographs of varous animals. You can see such detail in the animals' bodies. Here are some of the animals that our author/photographer included in this book: frogs, toads, a bat, birds, a flying squirrel, a fox snake, a Chinese praying mantis, a spotted salamander, and more.

David FitzSimmons shares many interesting facts about each animal but he does this in a very clever way. He writes as if the animal is talking. The sharing is done through basic facts, songs, and poetry.

At the end of the book there are two pages devoted to sharing the silhouettes of each animal. The life size silhouette allows you to see how the animals are different in size and shape. It was helpful to me as I read the book to be able to take note of the differences in their size . I believe a child will enjoy this section and a conversation could easily take place about the largest and smallest critters.

It is my experience that children are curious about animals. I see this book as a great resource to learn about some unusual animals. I also see it as one that would be helpful for school age children.

Book Review - Aerial Meets Farmer Fedamore

About the Book
Aerial helps Farmer Fedamore save his farm from the clutches of the nasty realtor, Gravier Engorgio. Find out how Aerial, an orb-weaver spider, triumphs over Gravier and saves Spiderville in the attempt.

My Take on the Book
Nancy E. Rewalt has written an adventure book that has chapters. This story is actually a very interesting one about a spider and his friends who help to save a farmer's field. There are heroes, the spiders, and there is a villain by the name of Gravier Engorgio.

The spider, Aerial, learns the information he needs to help the farmer by using the computer and the internet. Aerial must become a spy in order to find out information from our villain and his accomplices . He foils the villain so he cannot take the farmer's land and saves the day. In the end Aerial meets the farmer and they join together as friends. Can you imagine meeting such a smart spider?

It is an enjoyable book that children will love to hear and read. It has facts about spiders: the different kinds and where they live, what they eat, how they build their webs, etc.

Darren Cranford adds to the story with the delightful illustrations.

I know you and your child will enjoy this imaginative story.

My Take on the Popcorn
This popcorn was tasty! I had never tried this in the past but I do have to say that it was a hit in my home. With the fact that the popcorn was already popped, it was easy and convenient and my kids really loved the taste overall (let's just saw that the popcorn was gone during one movie). In looking at the above website I was amazed to find that the company has so many different products. I know that I now will be looking for more of their products in the future!

My Take on the Drink

Sweet and refreshing, this drink was not what I expected. I am not a huge soda drinker, but I do have a sweet tooth (which is my downfall) so there are times when I do drink soda or other sugary beverages, so I am always looking for alternatives that are healthier alternatives. What I loved about this is that it was lightly-carbonated, but it was also refreshing. I also loved the variety of flavors that they have in this. For me, I was able to try the pink grapefruit, but there are so many other options for any discerning palate. Overall, I would highly encourage you to check this out, you will not be disappointed.

My Take on the DVD Set
Growing up in the 80's I remember Jem too well... not that I watched it a lot but the theme song is emblazoned in my mind. I was shocked this year to find that the new Cable station, The HUB was carrying the show and that my girls loved the show. When I saw that the box set of the series was coming out, I was excited to be able to share this with my own daughters and I knew that they would love it. In receiving the set, my girls were ecstatic and they wanted to watch it right away. We actually had to limit the amount of time that they were watching the show as they wanted to keep watching every episode. I can tell that this box set will be one that will continue to keep my girls singing, dancing and having fun for a long time to come.
