Book review - Slow Cooker - Vegetarian

Slow Cooker - Vegetarian

About the Book
My Take on the Book
This is a great book for any vegetarian. So often I tend to have to put together a long, drawn out process to have food to eat at night. Working during the day does not always work well with this and in the end I have to spend a lot of time, after working a full day to set up and to cook the food. What I loved about this book is that there were so many ideas that could be made in a slow cooker and they were things I could set up ahead of time and then have food ready by the time that I got home for work. The book was easy to follow, with great images and instructions. I have made a few and they were great! I am really looking forward to trying so many of the other recipes in the future.

Book Review - The Healthy Slow Cooker: 135 Gluten-Free Recipes for Health and Wellness

The Healthy Slow Cooker: 135 Gluten-Free Recipes for Health and Wellness

About the Book
Definitions of healthy eating have changed quite dramatically since The Healthy Slow Cooker was first published in 2006. In those days it was one size fits all; i.e. low-fat, no saturated fat, low calorie and moving toward nutrient-dense foods.

Now there is a shift in nutritional guidelines and there is significantly more scientific information to add. Many experts report that many modern diseases are directly associated with the consumption of wheat and advocate for a reduction in carbohydrates for beneficial health results. Another significant development is the evidence against saturated fat is gradually diminishing. And at the same time, established dietary guidelines are under increasing scrutiny.

Judith Finlayson takes all this conflicting information and balances it with a common sense approach that can be customized according to individual needs. All the recipes are deliciously nutrient-dense and have a balanced approach that will meet a wide variety of needs in an unbeatable combination of appetizing, healthy meals prepared in a slow cooker.

With such a wide range of recipes, from hearty soups to elegant desserts, preparing nutritious and delicious meals strikes the perfect balance between achieving healthy eating habits and assuring great tastes. More recipes feature fresh herbs and spices as well as advocate the benefits of eating sustainably caught fish and pasture-raised meat. Nutritional analysis is provided with each recipe.

This book paints the nutritional big picture with a wide variety of nutrient-dense foods that have been easily and conveniently prepared in a slow cooker.

My Take on the Book
Judith Finlayson's first 17 pages of this cookbook are worth reading. She has written excellent information concerning using a slow cooker and preparing the recipes included in this cookbook.

The book contains recipes from breakfast to desserts. Each recipe has not only the ingredients and excellent directions for the preparation, but also variations to the recipe and "mindful morsels" which is added information about the recipe/ingredients.

So many recipes sounded delicious. Making Cioppino in a slow cooker piqued my interest. Did you know you can poach salmon in a slow cooker? Pumpkin Rice Pudding sounds delicious too.

If you possess a slow cooker and want more recipes to use this time saving appliance, I believe you will find this cookbook one you will enjoy using.

Book Review - In a While, Crocodile: New Orleans Slow Cooker Recipes

In a While, Crocodile: New Orleans Slow Cooker Recipes

About the Book
Many never seem to have the time to make good-quality meals for their families. A slow cooker is a great solution. In this convenient cookbook, favorite New Orleans recipes have been adapted for cooking in this popular appliance.

My Take on the Book
The women who wrote this cookbook were born and raised in New Orleans. They gathered recipes from friends and family and also invented some on their own. The chapters include: appetizers, soups and stews, entrees, sides, and desserts. All of them use the slow cooker.

As I read each recipe, I found that most recipes required ingredients that could easily be found outside of the New Orleans area. The directions were well written and easy to understand. There are several recipes I will note here that I want to try with my family soon: Charters Cajin Bean and Sausage Soup, Baronne Street Bruscialoni (similar to the Italian version of stuffed steak), Prytania Potatoes, and Blueberry Cobbler.

The recipes in this book are meat based and vegetarian.

If you are searching for a cookbook that is easy to use and bring a flavor of New Orleans into your kitchen and taste buds, I suggest you take a look at this one.
