Book review - Slow Cooker - Vegetarian

Slow Cooker - Vegetarian

About the Book
My Take on the Book
This is a great book for any vegetarian. So often I tend to have to put together a long, drawn out process to have food to eat at night. Working during the day does not always work well with this and in the end I have to spend a lot of time, after working a full day to set up and to cook the food. What I loved about this book is that there were so many ideas that could be made in a slow cooker and they were things I could set up ahead of time and then have food ready by the time that I got home for work. The book was easy to follow, with great images and instructions. I have made a few and they were great! I am really looking forward to trying so many of the other recipes in the future.

Book Review - The Vegetarian Reset: 75 Low-Carb, Plant-Forward Recipes from Around the World

The Vegetarian Reset: 75 Low-Carb, Plant-Forward Recipes from Around the World

About the Book

The Vegetarian Reset celebrates a lifestyle where a foodie sensibility intersects with healthy eating. It solves the never-ending dilemma that all plant-based eaters face: Is life fun when you eat salad every day, or is it worth it to let your health take a backseat to enjoy a big bowl of rice or pasta without enough protein?

In her debut cookbook, Vasudha Viswanath takes readers on a little trip around the world, drawing inspiration from an array of traditional and global cuisines that are rich in whole foods like vegetables, legumes, and healthy fats. Seasonal vibrant recipes are moderately low-carb and put vegetables front and center, while also being gluten-free! Learn to bake healthy bread from scratch, make paella out of cauliflower rice, transform paneer into gnocchi, and sweeten brownies with dates! Whether you already follow a low-carb lifestyle or simply want to add more healthy dishes into your rotation, The Vegetarian Reset will delight and inspire vegetarians, vegans, and omnivores alike to eat well, fully nourish, and reset your body.

My Take on the Book
This was an amazing book! I just became a vegetarian about a year ago and I continue to look for great recipes that I can make that bring in variety and flavor and this book really did both. So often I have thought that I had to stick to certain foods and give up on other foods that I loved. This cookbook really allowed me to see that I could try a ton of great food and not give up on flavor or variety. The recipes were easy to follow, and had beautiful images which allowed me to get a sense of what it "should" look like, but also really helped me walk step-by-step into a whole world of food to try. The end result was delicious meals that were filling and scrumptious. If you love vegetarian meals, this is a cookbook you do not want to miss!

Book Review - S'mores!: Gooey, Melty, Crunchy Riffs on the Campfire Classic

S'mores!: Gooey, Melty, Crunchy Riffs on the Campfire Classic

About the Book

Putting the more in s’mores!

While contemplating a traditional s’more, mad genius Dan Whalen, the recipe creator behind Tots!, asked a tasty question: What would happen if you kept the essential s’mores architecture—three layers of gooey, melty, and crunchy—but changed it up? The result? More than 50 playful, irresistible recipes that completely challenge the definition of a s’more. Riffs range from classic—Salted Caramel S’mores, Nutella S’mores, and Lemon Meringue S’mores—to crazy. Think Avocado S’mores, S’moresburgers, and the Elvis—bacon, banana, and peanut butter nirvana.

Enjoy your s’mores all year long! Every recipe is designed to be made in the broiler as well as over a campfire.

My Take on the Book
If you love S'mores, this is the book for you. You will find a ton of fun recipes that will make your mouth water. You will also be amazed at all of the unique ways in which you can make a S'more for yourself or others, as I know my eyes were opened more than once when I went through the book for myself. The book is easy to follow and the recipes are east as well. I did not have everything that I needed for all of the recipes, but I did have many of the items which made it even more fun to try them out. Now that it is the time of year when we are having more campfires, this book is perfect and as a family we are looking forward to trying out as many of the recipes as we can!

Book Review -In the Footsteps of Nonna: Recipes and Ramblings in Southern Italy and Sicily

In the Footsteps of Nonna: Recipes and Ramblings in Southern Italy and Sicily
 photo disclaimer_zpsd3x74ej2.jpg

About the Book
Bring home the taste of Italy!

Everyone wants to be Italian: Italian food is more than delicious—it’s heritage. Guided by author Bill Abruzzo, travel through the regions of Calabria, Lazio, Campania, and Sicily. Explore the many ways culinary traditions are connected to each region’s history and culture with easy-to-use recipes and personal anecdotes. Antipasti (Appetizers), Pane (Breads), Zuppe (Soups), Pasta, Cosi Dolci (Desserts), and Liquori (Liqueurs) form more than a mere meal: these dishes are your travel ticket. A special section on growing Italian ingredients and stocking your Italian pantry means great tastes and great stories are never further away than your own kitchen.

My Take on the Book
If you enjoy eating and cooking authentic Italian cuisine, you will love reading and preparing recipes from Bill Abruzzo'scookbook. Make sure you read the introduction. The author gives the reader important information about his history, family, and his inspiration for creating this cookbook.

Bill Abruzzo transports you through beautiful photographs to various locations in southern Italy and Sicily. Just looking at the photos created a desire to hop on a plane and arrive in Italy tomorrow.

As the author wrote each recipe, he preceded the ingredients with the area in Italy or Sicily that the recipe came from , along with an explanation. The reader will learn about the area and the choice of ingredients. As you read each section you will notice that local ingredients are used and how each section of the country is different. I found these writings so interesting so take the time to read each one.

I felt most of the ingredients you will need to prepare the recipes are easy to locate at your grocery store. The author wrote the procedure in excellent details which were easy to read and follow too.

The recipe selections were divided into the following: antipasti, breads and pizzas, egg dishes, soups , salads, pastas, vegetables, seafood, meats, and dessert. Each recipe has an accompanying photograph of the finished product.

I know you will enjoy using Bill's book, reading about his inspiration for the recipes, and actually preparing the selections.

Buon Appetito!

Book Review - Food, Football, and Fun!: Sports Illustrated Kids' Football Recipes

Food, Football, and Fun!: Sports Illustrated Kids' Football Recipes

 photo disclaimer_zpsd3x74ej2.jpg

About the Book
Whether you're throwing a football party, tailgating at the stadium, or playing in the game, these recipes have you covered. Hand off a pizza pocket football at home, grill up some Thai peanut chicken kabobs at the game, or celebrate with a chocolate-banana smoothie after a big win. With more than 60 recipes, Sports Illustrated Kids' Food, Football, and Fun will keep your hunger in check this football season!

My Take on the Book
The table of contents of this cookbook is quite large and will give the reader many choices in food for a sport party. There are major sections in the table of contents: football party, tailgating party, and football fuel. Each major section has appetizers, dips, entrees, desserts and drinks.

As I looked through the book I noticed each recipe page had a color photograph of the finished product. All the ingredients, tools, and instructions were well written. The author included how long it would take to prepare the food item. On many pages was some kind of a tip for the reader which I found quite helpful. For example: if the food item was prepared with meat, the tip included how to make it vegetarian.

I believe you will find this book to be a good resource for party foods that are easy to prepare.

Book Review - The Big Texas Steakhouse Cookbook

The Big Texas Steakhouse Cookbook
 photo disclaimer_zpsd3x74ej2.jpg

About the Book
Got beef? You bet your boots Texas does. The legendary land of cattle and cowboys, Texas produces billions of pounds of beef each year. This handsome cookbook showcases hundreds of the carnivore's favorite preparations, specially selected from among the menus of steakhouses across the state. Recipes and information about steaks of all stripes--from strip to chicken fried--alongside beef dishes such as chili and fajitas and other classic Texas steakhouse selections accompany this photographic tour of steaks, steakhouses, and steer in the Lone Star State.

My Take on the Book
This cook book is not just a cook book of recipes. The reader will find  information about different kinds of cuts of beef, how to cook them, and where they are located on the animal. There is information about aging beef and the history of chili too. Most of the recipes have a "tip" for the reader.

Each recipe is from a restaurant in Texas. There are beautiful photographs to accompany the recipes. The recipes are written so even an new cook could prepare them.

So, the book includes recipes for beef, starters, sides, sauces and rubs. There are recipes for desserts and drinks too.

One of the recipes I made for my family which they all enjoyed eating was zucchini perini. It was easy to make. The recipe involved cooking ground beef, sausage, onion, whole tomatoes, tomato sauce and paste, some herbs/spices and zucchini. The mixture is baked with parmesan cheese on top. It was so delicious.

If you enjoy eating beef, I believe you may want to check out this cookbook to add to your kitchen library.

Book Review - Mr. Dickey's Barbeque Cookbook

Mr. Dickey's Barbeque Cookbook

 photo disclaimer_zpsd3x74ej2.jpg

About the Book
Enjoy the flavors of Texas barbecue anytime! Mr. Dickey of Dickey's Barbecue knows how to serve up good Texas flavors, whether served in the backyard or in a stadium parking lot. This cookbook contains more than 100 recipes and tips on smoking meat, creating delicious sides, and hosting parties. Finally, everyone can serve up incredible meals that are inexpensive, easily cooked, and satisfying to the taste buds-the Dickey family way!

My Take on the Book
Dickey's barbecue has been serving food in the Dallas area for over seven decades. The original owner's son, Roland, now runs this famous restaurant. The cookbook not only has some great recipes but it is fun to read. The text is infused with humor throughout the book. Roland has included tips like "How to Host a Cook-Out" and anecdotes about the dish or its ingredients. The authors included photographs of most of the entries in the book .

I made two of the recipes. The first one was Southern Sun Tea. The proportions of water to tea were accurate and the sun here in the Midwest did a fine job brewing the tea. The second recipe I prepared was Aunt Marion's Coffee Cake. The recipe was an actual recipe of Roland's aunt . The preparation steps were easy to follow and the ingredients were common ones most would have in their home pantry. The result was delicious. The coffee cake was moist and light and the cinnamon and nutmeg were a perfect combination . I think your entire family will enjoy eating this cake.

If you are searching for a new cookbook with a wide variety of tested recipes, you may want to check our Mr. Dickey's Barbecue Cookbook.

My Take on the Book
What I loved about this book was how easy it was to follow and how delicious the outcome was for all of the items that we have tried thus far. The book is filled with great pictures which make it easy to see the end result. I also appreciated that most of the ingredients in the book were ones that I already had in the house (for the most part). The names of the recipes were memorable and there were some great twists on ones you may have made in the past that will make them instant favorites for the kids (at least that did in my house).

The author has a way of making cooking fun and you can tell that these recipes were included with the family in mind. Best of all, these are recipes that you can make with your kids. I had a blast with my own daughters whipping up some of the pancakes and while we may have made a mess, we had fun doing it and they tasted great! Great times and a great book!

My Take on the Book
Children love noodles of all kinds. It does not matter what shape they are, what they are made of, if they are stuffed or in a soup, or are covered with a simple sauce.

The author gives the reader so much information about noodles all over the world. He tells us all the different ingredients that can be used to make noodles and includes photographs to help the reader. Jonathon includes directions for making your own ravioli, spaghetti, stuffing cannelloni, making pierogi and lasagna, soups and more.

The photographs of each entry are so helpful. The recipes are written well and the step by step directions are easy to follow. He included step by step photographs for making certain noodles too which is extremely helpful to the cook.

My girls love to cook and I see this book as providing the information needed for us to make noodles on our own. If children become involved in the preparation of their food, they are more likely to try new tastes.

The book is definitely user friendly and I think you and your child will have fun preparing the recipes and eating them

About the Book
The Paleo diet and style of eating is sweeping the nation. But one of the biggest concerns of those following this food trend is not the lack of variety but the price of food. Blogger Ciarra Hannah, creator of PopularPaleo.com, has created 100 easy, wallet-friendly Paleo recipes that will feed the entire family. Her new book, THE FRUGAL PALEO COOKBOOK [Page Street Publishing, December 2014, $19.99 US] is a bountiful collection of delicious, easy, and affordable paleo recipes. By following Ciarra’s principles such as keeping it simple, focusing on sides, avoiding costly premium products, and being informed, home cooks can create delicious meals, save money and enjoy tasty, grain-free and healthy meals.

“Since there are plenty of folks out there far more qualified to tell you why the Paleo diet is so effective, I’m going to show you how to eat great Paleo food while maintaining a reasonable budget,” Ciarra states.

Insde Ciarra offers an incredible and practical selection of recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks, as well as kitchen basics such as spice mixes and poached chicken to keep on hand in the refrigerator, basic bone broth and homemade mayonnaise. Some of the fabulous recipes in the book include:

  • Cauliflower Lasagna
  • Beef Tips in Rosemary Balsamic Glaze
  • Vegetable Beef Curry
  • Summer Strawberry Salad with Chocolate Balsamic Vinaigrette
