Book Review - Ghosts & Haunted Houses

Ghosts & Haunted Houses

 photo disclaimer_zpsd3x74ej2.jpg

About the Book
Over the centuries, there have been reports of ghosts, haunted houses, and other eerie phenomenon. Is it possible that at least some of these sightings are true? Using the scientific method and other information, this book aims to find out!

My Take on the Book

There are many people who believe in ghosts and there are those of course who do not. As you read this book you can develop your own conclusions.

The book gives the reader specific examples in which people saw ghosts and experienced a physical feeling of a being near them. There are people who feel an emotional connection with the spirits and so of course believe they are present in their world.

It was an interesting book to read. There are some scientific statements for the thoughts and actions of people who believe and do not believe. Once you read this book, maybe you will form your own opinion if you have not formed one already.

Book Review - Building the Golden Gate Bridge: An Interactive Engineering Adventure

Building the Golden Gate Bridge: An Interactive Engineering Adventure

 photo disclaimer_zpsd3x74ej2.jpg

About the Book
People living in San Francisco during the 1920s and 1930s are fascinated by the project to build the Golden Gate Bridge—the world’s longest suspension bridge yet. Will you: Be a designer of the bridge, working to solve the many challenges created by such an enormous project? Work as a crewmember, accepting the dangers of laboring hundreds of feet in the air above the cold, swirling currents of San Francisco Bay? Experience situations taken from real life. YOU CHOOSE what you’ll do next. The choices you make will either lead you to success—or to failure.

My Take on the Book
Blake Hoena has written a book which I will call a "choose your own adventure." The main theme is the building of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California. The author gives you excellent basic facts about how the bridge became so important that it needed to be built. He discusses the process , the engineers, designers, and of course the very hard working men who risked their lives to build this amazing bridge.

I decided to read all the paths in this story. I have driven over the bridge and know of its importance and the thrill of going from one side to the other. As you read and choose paths the reader will learn of the challenges and dangers in building the bridge. You will feel like you are present in the time of the building.

Although this book is written for children, I believe adults will enjoy the content. Maybe you and your child can enjoy it together. I can guarantee you will learn many interesting facts.

Book Review - Scooby-Doo! Unmasks Monsters: The Truth Behind Zombies, Werewolves, and Other Spooky Creatures

Scooby-Doo! Unmasks Monsters: The Truth Behind Zombies, Werewolves, and Other Spooky Creatures

 photo disclaimer_zpsd3x74ej2.jpg

About the Book
Scooby-Doo and the gang are no strangers to mysterious monsters, but Scooby and Shaggy are still afraid of them. Join Scooby and the gang as they unmask the truth behind zombies, werewolves, mummies, and other spooky creatures!

My Take on the Book
If your child is a Scooby-Doo fan, this new Scooby-Doo book might be of interest to him/her. Shaggy, Scooby-Doo, Velma, Fred , and Daphne are once again the main characters in this story that takes each of 6 "monsters" and explains what they are and what they do. The monsters each have their own chapter. The pages are colorfully illustrated and the illustrators did a great job of showing the emotions of the characters.

This book is a good way to introduce the concept of a legend. Each monster has their own legend as explained by the main characters. The authors have included humor as with all the Scooby-Doo stories.

I think your Scooby-Doo fan will enjoy reading this book.

Book Review - The Sinking of the Lusitania: An Interactive History Adventure

The Sinking of the Lusitania: An Interactive History Adventure

 photo disclaimer_zpsd3x74ej2.jpg

About the Book
It’s 1915 and the Lusitania is set to sail from New York on its 202nd Atlantic crossing. But this will be a dangerous trip, as German U-boats lurk beneath the surface. Will you:
  • Experience the journey as an American boy traveling in second class to England with his family?
  • Travel first class as a young woman on her honeymoon?
  • Work as an American sailor hired to serve on the ship?
Everything in this book happened to real people. And YOU CHOOSE what you do next. The choices you make could lead you to opportunity, to adventure, or even to death.

My Take on the Book

This book is what I would call a "choose your own adventure" story. However while enjoying reading the book and choosing your various paths you can take as a character, the reader will learn historical facts about this ship and its place in world events.

The book is centered around three characters. So the reader chooses a character and after a page or two of the story, the reader chooses one of two paths. There are 42 paths to choose from and 23 different endings. I am sure you can see how this book can be read many times.

The author did a very good job giving the reader facts to assist in understanding the characters. The book was exciting to read and you could feel the emotion of the characters as they each went through the events on board the sinking ship.

At the end of the book are additional facts about how the sinking of the Lusitania eventually brought the United States into World War I.

If your child likes to read adventure books, I think this will be a good choice for a boy or girl.

Book Review - The Technology of Basketball

The Technology of Basketball

 photo disclaimer_zpsd3x74ej2.jpg

About the Book
The game of basketball has come a long way from James Naismiths soccer ball and peach baskets. From high-tech shoes to an in-game player tracking system, technology has become a regular on the basketball court. Slam dunk your way to the latest advancements in The Technology of Basketball.

My Take on the Book
This book is one of four in the series that give the reader facts about the technology that is currently being used in sports. The technology has changed the way players train, how the games are precisely watched and evaluated, and the attention given to the health of the players.

I felt the book was quite interesting to read. I learned some behind the scenes methods that technology is preparing the players to train more efficiently. The coaches and trainers seem to have a better understanding of the game and the men/women who are instrumental in playing the game.

There are instruments that check the heart rate of players. The cameras during the game enable the referees/officials to view a playback in the event of a difficult decision. There are even basketballs with a special circuit inside that send messages to a computer about the way a basketball player is handling the ball. Of course much much more information in this factual book.

If you enjoy sports I think you will enjoy not only reading the facts about the technology but viewing the photographs that accompany the text.

My Take on the Book
This is a great resource for any child interested in babysitting. It is filled with great hints, tips, fact and more about everything that you need to know when you are going to be caring for someone else's child.

In particular, outside of all of the practical information about what to do and how to do it, I loved the section on how to market yourself as a babysitter as this is something that a lot of kids forget, and instead they rely on word-of-mouth.

So if you are looking for some great tips or tricks on how to set yourself up for success as a babysitter, this is a great book that will help start you on the right path!

Book Review - Audacity Jones to the Rescue

Audacity Jones to the Rescue
 photo disclaimer_zpsd3x74ej2.jpg

About the Book Audacity Jones is an eleven-year-old orphan who aches for adventure, a challenge to break up the monotony of her life at Miss Maisie's School for Wayward Girls. Life as a wayward girl isn't so bad; Audie has the best of friends, a clever cat companion, and plenty of books to read. Still, she longs for some excitement, like the characters in the novels she so loves encounter.

So when the mysterious Commodore Crutchfield visits the school and whisks Audie off to Washington, DC, she knows she's in for the journey of a lifetime. But soon, it becomes clear that the Commodore has unsavory plans for Audie -- plans that involve the president of the United States and a sinister kidnapping plot. Before she knows it, Audie winds up in the White House kitchens, where she's determined to stop the Commodore dead in his tracks. Can Audie save the day before it's too late?

My Take on the Book
What a fun book! As a mystery loving family, this book was full of twists and turns and a good mystery that keeps you guessing. On top of this though we also get to have a fun cast of characters that I know that my daughters are truly looking forward to seeing in future books.

One of the things that my daughters loved about Audactity was her willingness to try everything. As a father, this is something I try and encourage my kids to do on a daily basis as well.

They also loved that this took place in the past. They have been really interested in history lately so reading a piece that was based in times past and was written in such a way that transports you there was fun for them and they really got a feel for the time and the era!

Overall, this was a great book for boys and girls (as well as their parents)!
