Pregnancy: No Excuse For Ditching Your New Year’s Resolution To Get Fit

Pregnancy: No Excuse For Ditching Your New Year’s Resolution To Get Fit

By Sonia Alvarado, CTIS Pregnancy Health Information Line Counselor

It’s a New Year, which for many people also means a renewed commitment to personal improvement –
also called “New Year’s resolutions.” High on the list of New Year’s resolutions is either exercising more
or starting an exercise routine. If you are not pregnant, most people take it for granted that maybe you
should hop on the treadmill or dance your way to better health in rumba class (or another trendy exercise
craze), but what about pregnant women?

It was not that long ago that pregnant women in the U.S. were seen as delicate, weak, sensitive creatures
that could not – or should not – lift grocery bags, children, exercise, or work. Pregnant women were seen
as human incubators that could be harmed by too much exertion or physical stress. In fact, many people
still hold on to these types of ideas, some of which are also culturally-based. At one time, the American
College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists (ACOG) also had a view that exercise should be low impact, and
that the heart rate should not exceed 140 bpm. This recommendation was a source of irritation to many
healthy pregnant women who exercised regularly and did not appreciate having to cut down on their
normal routines.

Recommendations for pregnant women
ACOG currently recommends pregnant women continue an exercise routine if they already have
one. They also recommend that sedentary pregnant women see their doctors about getting started on
appropriate exercises. Pregnant women are recommended to exercise daily, or at least, on most days of
the week for 30 minutes or more. Certain women may have health issues that make it risky for them and
in those cases the doctor may have other suggestions for strengthening muscles during pregnancy.

The ACOG Education Pamphlet AP119 -- Exercise During Pregnancy reports that exercise has a positive
impact on pregnancy and reduces common complaints such as backaches, constipation, bloating, and
swelling. More specifically, it reports that exercise “may help prevent or treat gestational diabetes,
increases your energy, improves mood and posture, promotes muscle tone, strength, and endurance, and
helps you sleep better.”

What do the studies show?
A review article published in 2010 in the journal Sports Medicine, looked at studies specific to pregnant
women and cardiovascular adaptations during exercise, compliance with current recommendations and
the effects of exercise on pregnancy outcomes.

The authors report that regardless of whether pregnant women exercise or not, there is a change in heart
rate that takes place from as early as two weeks of pregnancy and continues into the third trimester. There
is an increase in blood volume that starts at between 10 and 20 weeks. This change, as well as others,
however, has not been reported to be a barrier or disadvantage to exercising in pregnancy. Data suggests
that pregnant women who exercise have a lower resting heart rate compared to non-exercising pregnant
women and aerobically fit pregnant women have an improved V02, which means they take in more
oxygen and use it better during exercise.

When women exercise their heart rate increases, and so does the fetal heart rate. However, this has not
been reported to be a risk to the development of the baby and may have advantages for the baby during
delivery and after. Studies suggest that women who regularly exercise have tend to have infants that
are leaner, however, this has also not been reported to be a disadvantage. Very fit women also have
advantages in labor, including a decreased risk for c-sections.

What about yoga and Qi?
Qi gong (pronounced chee guhng) and yoga are both gentle exercises with a focus on stretching,
breathing and bringing calmness of mind to the practitioner. Qi is also reported to have an additional
emphasis on “energy life force.”

There have been a few studies looking at the benefits of yoga on sleep during pregnancy, Qi and yoga on
depression or anxiety in pregnancy, yoga on delivery-related stress and labor. The data on these exercises
has been reassuring. The studies are generally interview-based and reflect how participants feel about
their experience. For women who are interested in getting “fit,” but may not be interested in other types of
exercise, this may be another option.

Which exercises should be avoided?
The ACOG Education Pamphlet AP119 -- Exercise During Pregnancy, recommends avoiding contact
sports, downhill snow skiing and scuba diving during pregnancy. Sports with a higher risk for falling are
generally not recommended.

Whether your 2011 resolutions include walking, running, swimming, yoga, or Qi, I say, increase your
chances of being successful! Try it with friends, your pets, include your significant other and your
mother! Just make it fun and you’re more likely to still be at it in 2012!

The Total Transformation Program - 10 Ways to Turn Around Your Child’s Behavior in One Minute or Less.

Total Transformation

Ever since the day she was born, our daughter Diva-J has been a handful. She has challenged us every step of the way, and continues to do so even now as a 6 year old. While I love her with all my heart there are days that I am completely drained and I know that J-Mom feels the same way.

Our second daughter is completely different, laid back and carefree, she is our studious one and someone who simply site back and will go to her room to read. Though lately she has been starting to pick up some bad habits form her sister that J-Mom and I are not happy about.

program
So needless to say we have power struggles, arguing and attitude from Diva-J particularly that we are dealing with on a daily basis. We have tried many things and failed at many things, so when I heard about The Total Transformation Program by James Lehman, MSW, I was eager to give to try it to see if it could make a difference.

What I liked about this program when I first read about it was that it was a step-by-step, multi-media program designed to help parents manage challenging behaviors in children and teenagers. The program uses cognitive learning theory and behavior management techniques to help all ages change their behavior. Complete with DVDs, CDs and a 116-page workbook, this kit offers practical, real-world solutions for the most common and challenging problems that we all face.

I was able to review a 3-CD abridged version that contains key lessons on the concepts and methodologies found in the complete Total Transformation Program.

While I wished that I had the entire program to try out, I was excited to try the program that I did receive out and see what the hype was all about!

10 Ways to Turn Around Your Child’s Behavior in One Minute or Less.
This disc was a compilation of 10 simple techniques Dr. Lehman developed and used with kids for over 30 years. Given in a way that parents can put them to use immediately, these tips are made so that you can see quick, positive changes in your kids.

While some of the techniques on this CD were ones that I had already tried, I especially liked the idea of Disconnecting yourself when the child becomes disrespectful. My buttons are pushed on a daily basis and many times I feel that I need to react instead of disconnecting and simply saying “Don’t talk to me like that, I don’t like it,” and then turning around and walking away.

How to have Fantastic Style in 2011!

I wanted to pass along some glitz-centric tips and trends from Pam Kelly, National Director of Technical Salon Services for Fantastic Sams Hair Salons, one of the world’s largest full-service hair care franchises providing the same quality services as independent salons but at a fraction of the cost.

Holiday Hair
This year holiday hair styles point to chignons, twists and braids, but instead of a neat look, the deconstructed look is in.   Pam Kelly tells how to get the holiday look in 5 steps.

  • How to create a Chignon
    1. Hair is placed into a low ponytail at the base of the nape.
    2. Hair is then divided into two sections.
    3. Hair is then twisted in opposite directions and pinned into a low chignon.
    4. Tip: fantasticstyle™ firm hold gel can be raked through with fingers for more texture.
    5. Tip: to keep fly away hairs in place, use a small amount of fantasticstyle™ pomade on a toothbrush to smooth hairs in place.
  • How to create a Perfect Holiday Pony-Tail
    1. Shampoo and condition the hair. Unlike other updo’s, a perfect ponytail requires perfectly clean hair.
    2. Straight hair works best for ponytail, so blow dry the hair straight with a blow dryer. For naturally wavy or curly hair, apply fantasticstyle™ smoothing gel to damp strands.
    3. Left, right and center… decide on whether your guest wants to part her hair in the middle or if she would rather wear side pony tail.
    4. High or low ponies. Try experimenting with higher or lower ponytails to achieve different looks. High ponies are famous for providing women with “mini” facelifts by putting tension on the face and emphasizing on the cheekbones while low phonies tend to be more sophisticated, modern and sleeker style.
    5. Complete the look by spraying lightly with fantasticfinish™ finishing spray.

Trends 2011
As seen on the runways at NYC Fashion Week, hairstyles in 2011 will be a throw-back to the 1960s and 70s. What that translates to is hair with volume!   Yes, ladies, big is back and it is beautiful!  Pam also offers insights on other trends for the new year:

  • Multi-textured hair will also reign in 2011. Because fashion apparel is going 3-D, think of all the ruffles and full dresses/ skirts with volume at the bottom lengths, hair will also take on a 3-D look. Curls will be created by different size curling iron barrels so there is an explosion of waves. Crimping irons will make a comeback to provide a much textured look in hair.
  • And let’s not forget about the big bang! Deep full fringe bangs are in for 2011. Adding a full fringe to any haircut will update the look providing a modern and trendy feel.
  • Hair color will play off the Ombre’ color effects and root shading will remain popular. Ombre’ color effects is when the hair is highlighted from about 3 inches from the root area and gradually increases in lighter shades in the mid-shaft to the lightest color on the ends.
  • Root shading is when the natural root area is allowed to grow out or a darker color is intentionally place 1 to 2 inches from the scalp to give the “I’m too busy to do my hair look.” There is a growing group of fashionistas who prove that showing a little root can actually be tres chic as this technique allows less frequent retouches.

Chef Kids Cooking Club ChocoPot

About the ProductNamed one of 2010's coolest toys by CNBC, ChocoPot is a unique cooking experience combining an entertaining cooking DVD, a fun process and great tasting treats. Top Chef, Food Network, and “Julie & Julia” have made cooking popular once again, and BANDAI’s Chef Kids capitalizes on this current popularity. While most cooking programs are aimed at adults, the Chef Kids line includes instructional DVDs created for kids with interest in the kitchen. The kid-friendly cooking appliance melts chocolate to create fondue or molded candy in a variety of shapes to share with friends and family. The ChocoPot lets kid chefs make chocolate treats using a battery powered pot and three molds. Everything is included—just add chocolate!

Product Features

  • Keeps an appropriate, kid-friendly temperature on the melting surface
  • Includes a bonus instructional "Fun with Chocolate" DVD
  • DVD features Mandy from the web show "imandycom"
  • Set includes 1 ChocoPot, 3 chocolate molds, 1 spoon, 1 mini spoon, and 10 foils
  • Closed box packaging
My Take on the Product
This product is great for young cooks. It allows them to experience and have fun with making candy without spending big money on going to a chocolate shop. Easy to use, children will need some help to clean all pieces prior to use. The warming post takes 3 AA batteries and seems to last quite a while. One word of caution, when working with young children, be wary that the warming pot warmer can get a bit warm, so you will need to watch that small hands do not get too close to the warmer itself.

My eldest daughter tried this out and she loved it. I did have to help her a little bit, but she was able to handle herself, and in the end she was able to finish off any extra chocolate!

Overall, this was a great product and one that I would recommend for parents!

ALOHA, KANANI! AMERICAN GIRL’S 2011 GIRL OF THE YEAR HAILS FROM HAWAI‘I!

This January, kicking off American Girl’s 25th birthday celebration, is the debut of Kanani Akina™, the 2011 Girl of the Year®, whose story takes place in the lush tropical paradise of Hawai‘i. A warm and cheerful girl, Kanani loves her town’s beautiful beaches, tropical sunsets, and fun lu‘aus, but most of all, she and her family love sharing the aloha spirit—a desire to welcome and care for others with an open heart. Through Kanani, girls will discover that everyone has something to share that can make life better for someone else.

Kanani is available for one year and will launch with two books that tell her story, a beautiful 18-inch Kanani doll (featuring long, wavy medium-brown hair and hazel eyes), and an array of outfits and accessories such as a paddleboard set, a plush Hawaiian monk seal, and a shave ice. Written by acclaimed author Lisa Yee, the 2011 Girl of the Year books—Aloha, Kanani and Good Job, Kanani—introduce readers to Kanani and her small seaside town on the island of Kaua‘i.

Kanani loves working in her family’s shave ice and sweet treats store, as well as sharing the wonders of Hawai‘i with visitors. Whether she’s making her cousin from New York feel welcome on the island, helping rescue a baby Hawaiian monk seal, or assisting older people in her community, Kanani learns that by sharing herself and her home in the true aloha spirit, she is able to make life better for others. The back of each Kanani book features profiles of real girls who, like Kanani, discover the joy of helping others through their gifts and efforts, however small.

To share in the Hawaiian spirit of helping others, American Girl is partnering with the National Wildlife Federation® (NWF) to help raise awareness of endangered animals, like the Hawaiian monk seal featured in Kanani’s stories. With the purchase of every Kanani plush monk seal sold in 2011, American Girl is donating $1 (up to a maximum of $100,000) to NWF’s efforts to help children throughout the United States gain an appreciation and understanding for America’s most vulnerable animals through various educational programs and activities.

To further engage girls in Kanani’s world and her story’s inspirational message, American Girl is introducing the following products and activities in 2011:
  • Lend a Hand: Girl-Sized Ways of Helping Others: A nonfiction companion advice book to the Kanani fiction series, Lend a Hand gives girls ideas and tips (both big and small) for making a difference at home, among their friends, in their community, and on the planet.
  • Kanani Retail Events: Starting on January 1, girls can take part in Kanani-inspired events at American Girl retail stores nationwide, including demonstrations for dancing hula, free Hawaiian craft activities, and delicious Kanani-themed meals.
  • Kanani and Me E-cards: From January 1 through April 15, 2011, girls can create and share their own Kanani-themed postcards at americangirl.com/girloftheyear and can be automatically entered (with parent’s permission) in a drawing to win a Kanani doll and book.

Starting on January 1, 2011, the Kanani doll, books, and accessories will be available for one year
