My Take on the Clothes
I like to work out, but when I do I want clothing that is comfortable as well as that moves with me and the ZUMBA wear that I had the opportunity to try above fit both of these criteria. I was impressed at how lightweight the clothes were and how well they breathed while I worked out. If you are looking for some great workout clothes that will really work with you, these are definitely ones for you to check out, you will not be disappointed!

DVD Review - The Biggest Loser Power X-Train

All opinions expressed in this review are my own and not influenced in any way by the company.  Any product claim, statistic, quote or other representation about a product or service should be verified with the manufacturer or provider. Please refer to this site's Disclaimer  for more information. I have been compensated or given a product free of charge, but that does not impact my views or opinions.

About the DVD Throw out your excuses and get into a heart-thumping exercise routine when Lionsgate Home Entertainment releases The Biggest Loser: 30-Day Power X-Train on DVD, Digital Download and On Demand on December 4. Shed pounds and burn mega calories with the Power X-Train regimen and you will feel better than ever. The latest in “The Biggest Loser” home entertainment line, The Biggest Loser: 30-Day Power X-Train DVD will be available for the suggested retail price of $14.98.

Take it up a notch with the fat-burning moves in 30-Day Power X-Train! You’ve seen contestants drop pounds on NBC’s hit series, “The Biggest Loser,” and now it’s your turn! Using cross-training and core movements, you’re going to shed unwanted pounds, burn maximum calories and tone and tighten your legs, abs and arms for a total body workout. Get ready to sweat with trainers Bob Harper and Dolvett Quince as they challenge every muscle in your body.

My Take on the DVD
This is not an easy routine, it will challenge you daily and make you really get back into shape in no time flat. I am the type of person that gets bored easily with DVD workouts, but this DVD and the episodes within it kept me engaged and motivated to keep coming back for more. I have been finding that even though I have been using this now for a few days I am still getting winded and tired after every workout (and I am not in the worst of shape). One of the things that I liked was that the videos are short, but pack a ton into the time that you have to workout. One other thing that I will add is that I used to use more intense workouts that were harder on my body and I find that I am getting just as much of a workout with this without the constant pressure on my body (which is a nice change).

Keep Fitness Resolutions with Celeb Trainer Jackie Warner

Celebrity fitness trainer, New York Times best-selling author, and T.V. personality Jackie Warner gets sweaty for a living. In fact, she thinks healthy sweat is very sexy. That’s why she is proud to be named Official Wisk® Deep Clean® Sweat Ambassador. Warner is partnering with Wisk to launch the “Work It, Wisk It” campaign, challenging people nationwide to commit to working out – and getting sweaty – all year long.

January is the time for New Year resolutions, when millions of people commit to getting active. To help devotees across the country stick to their fitness-related resolutions, Wisk Deep Clean, the performance-tested laundry detergent that attacks hidden body oils and sweat, and Warner are helping people build confidence by getting active and embracing sweat! On Wisk’s Facebook page (Facebook.com/Wisk), people will have access to tips and tools from Warner and Wisk. They’ll also have the opportunity to ask Warner their most pressing fitness questions during a live question and answer session on January 9 at 12:30 p.m. at www.facebook.com/wisk/app_379130602168140, and during her Wisk Twitter party in early February. In addition, fitness fans can share their sweat-filled photos to enter the “Work It, Wisk It” Sweepstakes for the chance to win an all-expense paid trip to Los Angeles for a private workout session with Warner.

“As a celebrity fitness trainer, my passion is helping people build confidence -- and that requires a good workout routine and a lot of sweat! Sweat shows that you put your heart and soul into your workout which is always sexy!,” says Warner. “After my workouts, I need a powerful detergent I can count on, like Wisk Deep Clean. I know I can trust Wisk to give even my sweatiest workout clothes a really deep clean.”

“We are delighted to appoint Jackie Warner an Official Sweat Ambassador for Wisk Deep Clean,” says Yasmin Grant, at Wisk Marketing. “Her drive to be the best and promote the benefits of healthy sweat from vigorous exercise makes her a perfect fit for Wisk. Most people only focus on the stains they can see, but what they may not realize is that the average washload contains 20 times more hidden body oils and sweat, than visible stains,” Grant continued. “Wisk Deep Clean contains a patented blend of Micro-Cleaners that penetrate deep inside the fabric of clothes, to attack and help remove hidden body oils and sweat some other detergents can leave behind.*”

Among Warner’s secrets to good sweat is a positive mind-set, which involves things like chasing the burn instead of running from it, or finding ways to increase intensity by putting together a great music playlist that inspires you to stay active.

“This New Year, I’m on a mission to help people nationwide get fit and sweat like they never have before, with the confidence that Wisk will go the extra distance to give their active wear a deep clean,” says Warner.

Wisk® Deep Clean® laundry detergent is now available in five powerful varieties that redefine what it means to be clean – Original, High Efficiency, Oxi CompleteTM, Fresh Breeze, Free & Pure and new PowerBlasts. To learn more about Wisk Deep Clean, download a $1-off coupon, and enter a sweepstakes to win a trip to Los Angeles and a workout session with Warner, visit Facebook.com/Wisk.

4 Workouts at the Park

4 Workouts at the Park

Playgrounds are not just for kids, but also for those that are a “kid at heart.” Make the most of a calorie burn by having fun with the kids and getting a workout in! Your children will get a benefit by having fun with mom or dad and also by promoting to them that being fit is fun.

Tara Zimliki, founder of Tara’s Bootcamp, is no stranger to getting the whole family involved in her workouts. As a mom of two young daughters, she has perfected the art of making “fitness into funtime” with her children. Below are some of her favorite tips for those looking to maximize their time at the playground and have a workout at the park:

Simple Exercises for the Playground

  1. Use the Monkey Bars for chin ups or pull-ups, which will effectively tone your triceps, biceps, core and back.
  2. The Swingset is a perfect tool to use for stability and core exercises. Try a one-leg squat with one foot in the seat of the swing. Target your abs by sitting on the swing and leaning back about 45 degrees. Hold your legs straight out in front of you and cross them over one another in a “scissor”motion.
  3. Park Benches are not just for sitting! Target your shoulders and triceps with a bench dip. Place your hands on the edge of the bench seat and your feet angled in front of you. Lower yourself off the bench with your hands until your elbows are at about a 90-degree angle, and lift back up.
  4. Become a Jungle-Gym Jock. While your kids play on the jungle gym, use it to strengthen your arms with a standing push-up. The father back you stand from the gym, the harder the push-ups become.

How to Turn Your Stroller Into a Personal Gym

  1. Lunges and Squats are made more fun for kids by using their strollers for support or added resistance
  2. Running with a Stroller is no picnic, but Tara suggests ramping up your workout with intervals to make your routine go from boring to exciting for your kids

Get Fit America for Kids: Inspiring Conscious Happy Active Children

Get Fit America for Kids: Inspiring Conscious Happy Active Children
By Scott Cole

I have been working with children since 1986, and in those early years I worked with suicide prevention teens in the Dallas area---to this date the toughest audience in my career.  I mention this because sometimes adults feel that a child may just be “lost” and that what we are doing for them is perhaps not “breaking through” and never will.

Believe me, that is a common feeling to have, and certainly faced with what we see in America today---children who are morbidly obese, diabetic, medicated, and experiencing ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), it is no wonder that adults and parents feel frustrated, which seems to be pushing us farther from what we need to be doing---and that is reversing this ugly sad uninspired trend of cutting time and funds for music, art, and physical education.

I can share unequivocally that when given the chance to move, express, and learn something new and different like Yoga and Tai Chi, children respond, not always when and how you want them to, but trust me, the seeds are planted and these mindful movement programs make a huge difference.  By the end of my term with the suicide prevention teens, I remember one girl coming up to me, hugging me crying, “Don’t leave, I love it when you come see us.” I never forgot that.
Let us consider what are children are NOT getting:
  1. Healthy, organic, soil-grown food that for the most part could prevent adult-onset diabetes and obesity.
  2. Movement in all forms: Dance, Yoga, Tai Chi, Physical Education and PLAY every day.  Children NEED to breathe, move, express, scream, and ultimately experience healthy quiet time.
  3. Nature Experience: Outdoors, or certainly learning about Nature through “field trips” as we used to call them.
  4. Healthy levels of TOUCH, both from adults and their peers.  Activities that involve touch and physical/social communication are needed now more than ever as children bury their heads in video games, computers, cell phones, instead of looking into the eyes of their friends and touching each other in healthy play or activity.
  5. Support at home and in school: The United States is #36 on the longevity list worldwide (tied with Cuba according to the United Nations list), and is the most obese nation on Earth.  This translates into adults who have the same issues in charge of making decisions to prevent the current generation from having the problems we have.

America’s current in-home and educational landscape isn’t coming close to any viable solution until concerned adults (WE) take charge of it at ALL levels.
Let us consider addressing what children today NEED:
  1. First off, we need to make it MANDATORY that organic REAL food is served in schools, and have the children take an active part in learning about food, crops, and conscious farming.  No more corn subsidized fructose corn syrup in drinks and fruit cocktails, no more packaged nutrient-less slop, no more low-quality after-thought beef and chicken fingers, and all soda machines should be eliminated.  Not the most popular decision I know, but AMERICA IS ADDICTED to this “STUFF” that isn’t real food, and our bodies are in rebellion.  If children had normal levels of blood sugar, and are not doctored up by medication or addictive fast-food and sugars, ADHD would be reduced and we would start to see healthy alert, active children re-emerging.  The problem arises in budget and corporations that bid for these contracts, promising more for less dollars, and inevitably it is about profit, not about providing great food for our kids.

  2. If anything should be subsidized by the government, it should be food for our public schools, but organized by a non-corporate committee of nutritionists, parents, organic farmers, and educators.
  3. Next, we need to implement all forms of movement and PE in schools: Yoga, Tai Chi, Sports, Kickball, and Creative Play.  We just need to get our kids moving and playing again!  Whoever decided that eliminating PE would make our children “study more” has never dealt with children.  Once children play, emote, and express, they are more likely to actually WANT to sit down and read a book, study, or be quiet.
  4. Children need to learn more about their surroundings, from farming to crops to geography to nature.  Whenever I do the Get Fit America in-school assemblies, I teach barefoot, and if allowed by the school, the children are allowed to take their shoes off too.  This ALONE is a big adventure that gets the children excited to play and learn.  It still amazes me that something so natural and simple is not the norm anymore.  We talk about feeling the earth, listening to and becoming aware of Nature, and how our bodies are designed to touch and feel through the feet and hands, all incorporated with the movement and exercise.
  5. Touch is vital for any person.  Touch deprivation can contribute to depression, loneliness, and anti-social behavior that can manifest in a lifetime of discomfort around others.  After I have the children moving for awhile in the school assemblies, I then introduce a Partnered section of the program where the children get to touch, do mirrored-image movement, and learn to stretch and trust each other.  I tell them, “If you let go of your partner you are letting go of yourself.”  Most of them get the lesson.
  6. Adults need to do their part and understand that even if we don’t get the lessons of healthy living, it is VITAL for us to make choices that will influence our children for the better.

American obesity is an addiction, and adult onset diabetes is preventable, so unless we want to watch people age, become medically dependent, become lethargic, depressed, and inactive, then we need to turn this big ship around and get back on course to dock in an environment that will have clean pure water, organic healthy food, mindful exercise and creative encouragement as standard fuel for a healthy life.

Parents, teachers, educators, and concerned adults need to play an active part in each community, as part of an expressive society that both honors and cherishes our children enough to give them the tools to become the healthiest, most mindful, articulate, compassionate generation ever.

Pregnancy: No Excuse For Ditching Your New Year’s Resolution To Get Fit

Pregnancy: No Excuse For Ditching Your New Year’s Resolution To Get Fit

By Sonia Alvarado, CTIS Pregnancy Health Information Line Counselor

It’s a New Year, which for many people also means a renewed commitment to personal improvement –
also called “New Year’s resolutions.” High on the list of New Year’s resolutions is either exercising more
or starting an exercise routine. If you are not pregnant, most people take it for granted that maybe you
should hop on the treadmill or dance your way to better health in rumba class (or another trendy exercise
craze), but what about pregnant women?

It was not that long ago that pregnant women in the U.S. were seen as delicate, weak, sensitive creatures
that could not – or should not – lift grocery bags, children, exercise, or work. Pregnant women were seen
as human incubators that could be harmed by too much exertion or physical stress. In fact, many people
still hold on to these types of ideas, some of which are also culturally-based. At one time, the American
College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists (ACOG) also had a view that exercise should be low impact, and
that the heart rate should not exceed 140 bpm. This recommendation was a source of irritation to many
healthy pregnant women who exercised regularly and did not appreciate having to cut down on their
normal routines.

Recommendations for pregnant women
ACOG currently recommends pregnant women continue an exercise routine if they already have
one. They also recommend that sedentary pregnant women see their doctors about getting started on
appropriate exercises. Pregnant women are recommended to exercise daily, or at least, on most days of
the week for 30 minutes or more. Certain women may have health issues that make it risky for them and
in those cases the doctor may have other suggestions for strengthening muscles during pregnancy.

The ACOG Education Pamphlet AP119 -- Exercise During Pregnancy reports that exercise has a positive
impact on pregnancy and reduces common complaints such as backaches, constipation, bloating, and
swelling. More specifically, it reports that exercise “may help prevent or treat gestational diabetes,
increases your energy, improves mood and posture, promotes muscle tone, strength, and endurance, and
helps you sleep better.”

What do the studies show?
A review article published in 2010 in the journal Sports Medicine, looked at studies specific to pregnant
women and cardiovascular adaptations during exercise, compliance with current recommendations and
the effects of exercise on pregnancy outcomes.

The authors report that regardless of whether pregnant women exercise or not, there is a change in heart
rate that takes place from as early as two weeks of pregnancy and continues into the third trimester. There
is an increase in blood volume that starts at between 10 and 20 weeks. This change, as well as others,
however, has not been reported to be a barrier or disadvantage to exercising in pregnancy. Data suggests
that pregnant women who exercise have a lower resting heart rate compared to non-exercising pregnant
women and aerobically fit pregnant women have an improved V02, which means they take in more
oxygen and use it better during exercise.

When women exercise their heart rate increases, and so does the fetal heart rate. However, this has not
been reported to be a risk to the development of the baby and may have advantages for the baby during
delivery and after. Studies suggest that women who regularly exercise have tend to have infants that
are leaner, however, this has also not been reported to be a disadvantage. Very fit women also have
advantages in labor, including a decreased risk for c-sections.

What about yoga and Qi?
Qi gong (pronounced chee guhng) and yoga are both gentle exercises with a focus on stretching,
breathing and bringing calmness of mind to the practitioner. Qi is also reported to have an additional
emphasis on “energy life force.”

There have been a few studies looking at the benefits of yoga on sleep during pregnancy, Qi and yoga on
depression or anxiety in pregnancy, yoga on delivery-related stress and labor. The data on these exercises
has been reassuring. The studies are generally interview-based and reflect how participants feel about
their experience. For women who are interested in getting “fit,” but may not be interested in other types of
exercise, this may be another option.

Which exercises should be avoided?
The ACOG Education Pamphlet AP119 -- Exercise During Pregnancy, recommends avoiding contact
sports, downhill snow skiing and scuba diving during pregnancy. Sports with a higher risk for falling are
generally not recommended.

Whether your 2011 resolutions include walking, running, swimming, yoga, or Qi, I say, increase your
chances of being successful! Try it with friends, your pets, include your significant other and your
mother! Just make it fun and you’re more likely to still be at it in 2012!
