Blamtastic, the lip balm (or should we say Blam) created by kids, for kids, is looking to expand its flavor choices. In 2007, Retha Sandler read that only 12 of the businesses on the Fortune 500 list were owned by women. Being the mother of two daughters, she wanted to ensure they knew they could achieve anything, so she challenged them to come up with an idea for a business. The girls, Lily now 12 and Melanie now 10, decided they wanted to make lip balm. Blamtastic was born.
This is no ordinary lip balm. Retha looks at it like this, “My kids… use it so I wanted only the finest ingredients available for your kids and mine!” First and foremost, no animal testing allowed. Unlike competitors, the Sandlers decided petroleum (a form of crude oil) would not be used in their lip balm. Another ingredient banned from Blamtastic was parabens, synthetic preservatives that mimic estrogen and can cause hormone disruption. A must for the lip balm line was SPF 15. The Sandlers also decided to sacrifice some of their profits and keep the manufacturing of Blamtastic in the United
It seems all of that attention to detail worked. In a blind taste test, Blamtastic beat Burt’s Bees, Chapstick and Lip Smackers! Creative Child Magazine gave Blamtastic its 2010 Seal of Excellence. And PTPA (Parent Tested Parent Approved), a respected product watchdog agency, awarded Blamtastic as a Top Product of 2010.
Part of what makes Blamtastic so great is the colors and flavors, all approved by Lily and Melanie. For the girls, there are seven flavors including O.M.G. (Oh my grape!) and Lemon-liscious. Boys also have seven flavor choices, for instance Radioactive or Alien Invasion. Blam sleeves ensure your Blamtastic is always handy. The sleeves hook on to backpacks, notebooks, purses, belt loops and zipper pulls.
Despite the success Blamtastic has already had, the girls are always looking to expand their line. Right now, they are holding a contest for the next Blamtastic flavor. Fans can vote for their favorite on the website, www.blamtastic.com.
Of their success, Retha says, “I NEVER thought it would go this far. From cooking it in our kitchen to selling nationwide and exporting to Canada and South Korea is a pretty amazing feat… We’ve been so very lucky!”
