Real Deal Brazil Tarp Hat Gives You Style & Protection #charlieswarehouse

 photo disclaimer_zpsd3x74ej2.jpg

About the Hat
This is a Real Deal Brazil Hat made from recycled Brazilian truck tarps which is shapeable due to wire brim which is recycled from truck tires. Each hat is unique since they are made from recycle tarps. Also included is a Solos's Accessories leather chin cord made from Utah distressed leather.

My Take on the Hat
This was a great water-resistant hat that fits well and gives you full protection for all of the activities that you may be doing personally or that you may be attending with your family. This being said, the hat is very form fitting and a bit still at first, but I found that it does loosen the more that you wear it. One of the nice things with this was that the brim is mold-able and it allows you to create the look and feel which is right for you. This hat really gives you a rubbed look while providing you a great fitting hat which protects and looks great!

Use PYUR To Monitor Your Family's Internet Usage!

With so many devices in the home, keeping tabs on internet use has been a tough—if not impossible—task for parents. Many parents have simply given up in the process. PYUR, a new smart filter which began its pre-sales campaign today, aims to be an all-in-one solution that eliminates the need for multiple parental controls. PYUR is the first product of its kind that combines smart filtering, mobile alerts and customized reports. A bonus feature of the product is that it continues to work on smart phones that are disconnected from the network and using 3G.

"Most filters come in the form of software you have to install on each device you want to protect,” said Michael Tingey, founder and CEO of PYUR. “The average U.S. household has over seven internet-connected devices ranging from desktops to laptops to tablets and iPods. If your child is blocked on their laptop, they can just switch over to the iPad and continue viewing the inappropriate content. So I started imagining a modern filter as a single, physical device that could monitor every connection.”

With its sleek and straightforward design, PYUR promises to be as simple to use as it looks. To set up PYUR, users simply plug in the box, sync it to their phone, and begin monitoring internet usage. The PYUR app works in combination with the device so that parents can stay informed when they are on the go. And as a smart, intuitive device, PYUR learns to accurately monitor time and content, saving parents from the hassle caused by inaccurate censorship.

“There are a million other web filters out there, that block anything and everything,” said Tingey. “I wanted something that gave me a smarter, simpler, more customizable experience. I quickly realized that that kind of experience didn’t exist. That’s why we created PYUR.”

  • Smart Filtering: PYUR's smart filter analyzes user behavior in addition to monitoring site content, eliminating the aggravation of traditional page blocking. In the real world, this means that PYUR will learn to differentiate between an online shopping spree for lingerie and online activity that may escalate into viewing pornographic material.
  • Mobile Alerts: PYUR uses real-time alerts to notify a parent or admin of suspicious activity on their network. PYUR can also send a message directly to the user’s device to let them know if a red flag was detected in their browsing activity.
  • Internet Reporting: Detailed charts and reports allow parents to find out in seconds how much time each child is spending on major websites. Each site visited on every device is analyzed, cataloged, and displayed in a simple, image-based feed via the PYUR app.

PYUR is currently being offered at a pre-sales discount rate of $199 for the box and a one-year subscription service (retail value of $420). Customers can sign up at www.pyurweb.com.

Mace Wear Is A Crime Fighting Wearable Device #DadChat

 photo disclaimer2_zps8af35ac1.jpg

About the Device
First Sign Technologies, in partnership with Mace Wear, announced the launch of the Mace Wear Pod, the first-ever crime fighting wearable device and app. The smart device, which acts as a personal security system against violent crimes, is available for purchase today at www.firstsign.us.

At the “First Sign” of a violent attack, the Assault Alarm is activated and the speaker lets the attacker know that “evidence has been collected and help is on the way.” The phone automatically begins to collect evidence, take photos, and call for help which will help identify, apprehend, prosecute and deter attackers.

The Mace Wear Pod can be worn in five ways as a headband, wristband, key chain, belt clip and pendant. In addition to offering peace of mind, the MaceWear Pod is lifestyle friendly, weighs only .3 ounces and is visibly discreet.

For those not wearing the pod, the mobile app, which can be downloaded on iPhone and Android, can also be activated in four ways, by hitting the alert button, by shaking the phone, by dropping the phone when in a specified mode, and by setting a time to check-in and if not the alarm is activated.

Please view this video demonstrating how it works.

First Sign Technologies was launched in January2014. Following a successful crowd-funding campaign the product has hit the market today and is available with one year of monitoring service for $120.

“There is a demand for personal protection and with the advances in wearable technology, we want to create products that give peace of mind,” said President of First Sign, Rachel Emanuele. “Mace is an ideal partner to help us expand our product line and help promote safety to all who seek it.”

In 2015, the products will be available in more than 1,000 brick and mortar locations such as Dick’s Sporting Goods, Sports Authority and Sears.

My Take on the Device
Safety is important to me as a father of two girls. While I live in a fairly safe area, I cannot say that my girls will never be somewhere where they may not be in a safe area and may need to have some additional eyes or help at their beckon call. This is where the Mace Wear device comes in. What is great about this device is that it is something that can be worn, but is inconspicuous and small. The device is made to act as a deterrent but is not bulky (it actually is about the size of a quarter or so).  I love that it is easy to wear, and starts collecting information, calling for help and announcing all of this at once. The device is easy to use and connect and is definitely something that I would have no problem having my own kids using as they get older too. I highly recommend that you check it out for yourself to see all of the amazing things that it can offer you and your family too!

V.ALRT from VSN Mobil is Crucial Connection to Summon Help Anywhere

 photo disclaimer2_zps8af35ac1.jpg

V.ALRT from VSN Mobil

Personal security and safety are things everyone values, but they’re often taken for granted. VSN Mobil has introduced the V.ALRT, Personal Emergency Alert Device, a small wearable device that works with a smartphone to send out urgent calls and texts at the touch of a small button, summoning help wherever and whenever someone should need it. The V.ALRT is available for purchase at www.VSNMobil.com and Amazon.com for $59.99.

V.ALRT from VSN Mobil

“The ubiquity of cell phones has transformed people’s access to each other. Yet, there are still situations when a cell phone is not within reach, or is inconvenient or impractical to carry in your hand,” explains Matt Gordon, Vice President of Strategic Marketing at VSN Mobil. “It’s at those exact moments – when exercising outside alone, living independently with a medical condition, or sending a child out on a bike ride – when the V.ALRT serves as a useful connection between people and the help they need.”

V.ALRT from VSN Mobil

The V.ALRT is an ergonomically designed device that can be carried discreetly in a pocket or a bag, worn on the wrist with the included band or around the neck as a pendant. Using a multi-axis accelerometer and Bluetooth® SMART (Bluetooth 4.0 LE) technology in association with a software application from VSN Mobil, the V.ALRT initiates calls and text messages from a smartphone. With the push of a button, the V.ALRT connects with the smartphone to send personalized text messages and makes phone calls to three pre-selected contacts. The customizable text message will indicate that help is needed and also provide location information using the GPS feature on the smartphone (when available). The V.ALRT application can also be set to Fall Detect Mode to automatically notify your preselected contacts should a fall be detected.

V.ALRT from VSN Mobil

The V.ALRT provides up to a year of use before needing to replace the battery. The V.ALRT’s companion app is available for both iOS and AndroidTM phones and is fully customizable, yet simple to set up.

“The V.ALRT is simple and versatile. Almost anyone can use it. Soon, it will become a vital tool in keeping people connected to their kids, aging or ailing parents, or anyone in need of help during unexpected times of trouble,” adds Gordon.

The V.ALRT is the first product introduced by VSN Mobil, a company founded by accomplished executives from Motorola, Samsung, Blackberry, Foxconn, General Dynamics and Pininfarina, among others. VSN Mobil designs and manufactures consumer electronics that meet the needs of everyday life and are unique in their durability, affordability and design.

Active and Secure – When running, hiking or riding a bike, as with a number of other outdoor activities, holding a smartphone is awkward and can lead to pricey repairs if dropped. Yet, active people who exercise alone want the ability to quickly signal for help if they become injured or feel their personal well being is threatened. The V.ALRT is a “go-to” device that can be carried in a pocket, worn around the neck or wrist, or attached to a keychain. Its fall detection feature can also send an alert in a critical situation.

Connecting Families – With the V.ALRT, children can enjoy their independence while parents maintain their piece of mind. Drop the V.ALRT in a backpack or a pocket, or clip it on a helmet and kids have a hotline to home at the touch of a button. All in an unobtrusive way that won’t make him or her the odd kid out.

Homebound No More – Since the V.ALRT is paired to a smartphone, and not dependent on a landline or other hardware, the V.ALRT can help people with medical conditions stay connected wherever they have their smartphone. In the yard, at the grocery store, and at home as well, if help is needed the V.ALRT will connect with the smartphone to send the programmed notifications when the button is pushed. When a fall has occurred and the button cannot be activated, the V.ALRT fall detection feature generates calls and texts to summon help. Slightly bigger than a quarter, the V.ALRT is discreet and lightweight to wear, and can even be worn in the shower.

Specifications for the V.ALRT button:
  • Size: 32 mm diameter, 10 mm thick
  • Weight: 8 grams
  • Environment: Waterproof (up to 1 meter for 30 minutes)
  • Battery: Comes with a replaceable CR2032 battery that is commonly available and lasts up to one year depending on use.
  • Range: Bluetooth 4.0 technology allows for a range of up to 75 feet indoors and up to 300 feet outdoors between the V.ALRT and the smartphone
  • Accessories: pendant and watch band Specifications for the V.ALRT software application:
  • The V.ALRT application is available on iTunes for iPhone®4s/IOS 7 or newer releases and in Google Play for AndroidTM 4.3 or newer releases

To pair the V.ALRT, the smartphone must have Bluetooth ® SMART (Bluetooth 4.0 LE) wireless technology.

My Take on the V.ALRT
Being someone who is now starting to have to take care of aging parents, let alone a parent, this device is awesome! I am at times worried when I know that they are alone, and worries for my own oldest daughter when she goes out on her bike. The nice thing with this is that you can easily take it anywhere. The device is so small which means it can be worn or concealed without people knowing.

I tried out the device a few times and found that it was accurate and sent the message that I wanted it to send without a problem. The thing that I have to say that I like the most is that I have peace of mind knowing that I will get notified if there is a problem and I can act quickly in that manner.

Though I only have one of these devices, I have already been thinking about getting a few more, and with no monthly fee, this is a great safety device to have for all of my family members!

If you would like one or more of these for your family you can get one for 20% off by using VSN20 and it can be used at the store at VANMobil.com

Tips & Tools for Secure Holiday Shopping Off- and On-line & Lock Review

Master Lock 2120DWD Password Laptop Computer Lock
 photo disclaimer2_zps8af35ac1.jpg

Tis the season for online shopping, and with online sales expected to increase 13-15% this holiday season, it’s important to ensure online holiday experiences are safe ones. The holiday season should be fun and festive, and the joy of the season can be lost quickly if people interact with an un-safe website, lose important receipts or blow their budgets.

Master Lock and Mario Armstrong, Digital Lifestyle Expert™ have provided tips and tools to help navigate the holiday safety, securely and with as little stress as possible.

  1. Make smart online purchases. The convenience of online holiday shopping can quickly be derailed if you become a victim of identity theft due to sharing your credit card and shipping data with a non-secure site. Before entering any personal or financial information, check to make sure the website is secure.
  2. Click with caution. Consumers may be bombarded with link-heavy holiday emails this season sending well wishes or advertising hot gift items and sales. Consumers are advised to click links with caution to avoid a malware-spreading site.
  3. Set and track your budget. Avoid post-holiday regret or debt by setting a realistic budget and tracking your purchases to ensure you adhere to it. A variety of apps and websites can help you with your budget tracking goals, such as Mint.com or the Master Lock Vault.
  4. Keep digital receipts. Easily file away receipts from your holiday shopping in one place to cross-reference purchase dates and totals with your bank and credit card billing statements to check for any unfamiliar charges, or to facilitate easy returns after the holidays.
  5. Don't leave a digital trail to your gift purchases. If you are using a computer that other family members use and don't want them to see what sites you've visited, enable your browser's private browsing feature when researching and buying gifts.

About the Product
Master Lock 2120D computer lock is the must have for the traveling professional, office employee, or busy student who needs to safeguard their professional or personal equipment and its' valuable contents. This lock is strong, easy to use, convenient to transport, and a universal fit for any electronic device with a built in lock slot including laptop and desktop computers, external hard drives, and scanners. I loved how easy this lock was to set up and use. It connected easily to my laptop and I had no problems at all with the lock staying secure. This gave me peace of mind when I was out in public that I could leave my computer out without it walking away with someone else. The other thing that was great about this lock was the personalization that it affords you when it comes to the lock itself. You can make the password what you like or change it every now and again to make sure that no one gets to know your password! If you are looking for a great lock for your laptop, this is a great one in my perspective!

The Evenflo RightFit Booster Car Seat Offers Comfort and Safety

 photo disclaimer2_zps8af35ac1.jpg

August still proves to be the busiest travel month for families. With only a short time left of summer break, we know that parents across the country are trying to sneak in their last-minute family road trips before heading back to business. According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the lives of more than 8,300 children under age 5 have been saved by using child restraints properly. Since road injuries are the leading cause of preventable deaths and injuries to children in the United States, Evenflo is urging all parents to make sure they take the safe road when it comes to car seat installation.

Child safety seats that are used correctly can reduce the risk of death by as much as 71 percent according to SafeKids.org. We hear from parents all the time that installing car seats are a pain, but with the Evenflo Symphony All in One Car Seat’s SureLATCH Connectors parents just need to Click, Click, Push for super-fast, super-snug installation in less than 60 seconds. We know older kids safety and comfort are two concerns when choosing the right seat, the RightFit Booster Car Seat offers a 2-in-1 design that allows them to transition from a high-back booster seat to a no-back booster seat. It also has e3 foam integrated into the head and back rest components help to reduce Side Impact forces. The activity lights installed in this seat allow your child to read, color, or play video games on those overnight trips. With these two car seat options, parents have peace of mind knowing kids are safe and secure if a collision does occur.

My Take on the Right Fit Booster Car Seat
I have to say that I was excited to try this new car seat/booster out, not only because they look very cool, but also because of the safety pieces that have been put in place for this product. The car seat is plush and comes in a variety of colors. I received one in red, but in looking at some of the other colors I think my youngest would probably pick out the purple one (the one they call hollyhock). The seat was easy to put together and even better was how easy this seat was to install in the car.

I can say as a parent, the ease of putting one of these seats into the car can make or break my opinion of a seat, and this one definitely passed in my perspective.

The seat design was great and I really liked the extra safety that came with the seat back wrapping around the child's head. This extra security is also something that I am always looking for when it comes to a car seat.

Finally, and this is not a huge thing, but the two large cup holders were also great as the other booster seats that we have had did not have this and we were constantly having to pick up their drinks, hold it for them, etc. Having these holders really aided us in allowing our child to have the independence they always want.

All-in-all I was very impressed. Evenflo continues to design stellar seats that are safe and stylish - check this one out today!

LifeGuard GPS provides an ideal “on the job” training and monitoring solution for parents who want to do more than just “hope for the best” after a their teen gets a driver's license. LifeGuard has GPS units that easily installs in the teen's car to monitor location, speed, and even periodic maintenance needs like gasoline, oil, etc. Parents can set “Geofences” and speed alerts so whenever a parent-defined location or speed “boundary” is crossed, LifeGuard sends immediate notification to the parent for follow-up and discussion with the son or daughter. Teens soon learn that Mom or Dad is the invisible passenger on every ride.

LifeGuard GPS gives parents invaluable information to help them reward their teen's good driving habits and correct their risky inattentiveness or poor decisions. Byron Stinson, founder of LifeGuard GPS, says, “I highly doubt my teen would consider doing anything reckless if they knew I was in the backseat watching every move they made.”

Parents are encouraged to sit down with their teen and communicate a system of incentives for responsible driving behavior as well as some logical consequences for careless irresponsibility – all in the spirit of, “I love you too much to do otherwise! I cannot bear the thought of losing you!”

LifeGuard GPS provides the complete package needed to help protect a son or daughter. The devices are affordable and simple to install, ranging from 5 seconds to 25 minutes, depending on which device is purchased. The devices are $199 with no activation fees and the monthly service is only $19.95 per month. Parents can even pay for a year of service for only $199.95, which saves parents two months worth of service. Once the device is installed, the parent is able to view locations, speeds, and stops from any computer, tablet, or smart phone that is internet enabled. The system also includes a maintenance package that helps track regular maintenance including oil changes, state registrations, tire rotations, and much more. When any maintenance item entered is due, the parent will be notified by text or email.

Here are a few of the features included in the monthly package:

  • Roadside Assistance - If your teen breaks down or gets lost in unfamiliar areas, you can use Lifeguard GPS to locate the car and send help. No more guessing where they are!
  • Monitor Speed - Set Speed Limits and receive alerts to your phone or email if the limits are breached, effectively teaching better driving habits to your teen.
  • Recover Stolen Cars - In America over 1 million vehicles are stolen every year. Don't become a victim of car theft. Your GPS can provide critical information to law enforcement and recover your stolen car quickly. Also, with the included starter disable, you can prevent a thief from restarting your vehicle in the event it was stolen. Parents are encouraged to check with their insurance provider. We have seen discounts up to 33%!
  • Safe Zones - Set pre-defined boundaries and routes, selected locations allowed or disallowed. Get alerts to your phone or email if boundaries are crossed.

Today’s Teens Aren’t the Only Ones Sneaking Around

For generations, parents have been suspicious of teens’ social activities – and have employed any number of tactics to uncover the truth. Today’s parents are no exception; they simply have more channels to monitor. The fifth Digital Diaries installment conducted by AVG Technologies, a leading provider of Internet and mobile security, revealed that 60 percent of American parents surveyed admit to accessing teens’ Facebook accounts without theirknowledge, with moms most likely to be the guilty party.

AVG’s global, multi-year, Digital Diaries research project has aimed to determine how the Internet is
impacting children as they play, learn, and grow up in today’s digital world. Entitled “Digital Coming
of Age,” the latest phase of the study surveyed 4,400 parents with 14-17 year olds in 11 countries.
To begin, findings show that 75 percent of American parents stay connected to their children on
social networks, which is significantly more than parents in other countries. Across the globe, it’s less
common for parents to be “friends” with their teens on Facebook to be able to monitor the activity
teens permit them to see through their privacy settings. In fact, this number is as low as 10 percent
in Japan and 33 percent in France.

"I'm convinced that parents need to communicate more with their teens about the digital coming of
age. Even though most teens have intuitive online abilities, parents need to be setting limits, rules,
and staying aware of what's going on,” said Rona Renner, RN, temperament specialist/parent
educator and founder of Childhood Matters. "Safely navigating new technologies in the digital age is
quickly becoming an important task in adolescent development. Successfully accomplishing this
takes families working together to build a sense of safety, trust, and respect. AVG's Digital Diaries
research and products help parents of teens as they find the right balance between hands on and
hands off parenting."

Digital Coming of Age further reveals American parents are keeping tabs on their teens’ online
activity. A majority of moms and dads actually give their children credit for doing the right thing and
have minimal concerns about illegal, inappropriate and career-damaging behaviors, however they
continue to monitor their teens in today’s connected age. The study revealed:

  • Twenty percent suspect their children are accessing pornography or illegal music downloads; and 5 percent suspect their children of gambling.
  • Twenty percent of American parents also suspect their teens of “sexting” via their mobile phones.
  • Almost half of parents in the U.S. believe their teens conduct relationships with friends and family via their mobile phones, yet only 9 percent think these relationships are sexual.
  • An overwhelming 80 percent of parents believe their teens have never met someone in person that they first met online.

“Is it spying or is it good parenting when parents closely monitor teens’ online activity?” asks Tony
Anscombe, senior evangelist for AVG Technologies. “Parenting teens that have grown up alongside
the Internet and with mobile phones in hand requires an entirely new set of rules and tactics. Our
research reveals that while parents trust their teens to do the right thing, such as avoiding
pornography on the Internet and “sexting,” they are still concerned about their children’s safety and
how teens’ online behavior may affect their future careers.”

Forty percent of American parents worry the content their children post to Facebook and other
social networks will affect their children’s job prospects down the road. Adding to this stress, less
than 50 percent of American parents feel their child’s school is doing a good job preparing their
students for the online world. They aren’t alone in their concerns. Digital Coming of Age found that
nearly half of all parents around the globe felt that schools were not effective in teaching their teens
to responsibly use the Internet.

"In a very short period of time we have seen amazing changes in the ways we communicate and
gather information because of digital technologies. Cell phones, video games and the Internet blur
boundaries and change rules. This of course affects families and especially families with teens
between the ages of 14-17 who are coming of age with these digital tools,” said Jason Brand,
licensed clinical social worker who focuses on the impact of technology on the social and emotional
development of kids. “It's important for parents with older teens to have access to research and
practical advice to help them adequately address their concerns. With good information about this
rapidly changing area in teens’ lives; parents can know what to expect, understand what's normal
and identify possible red flags."

“Our latest research will hopefully facilitate conversations with parents, educators and others
around the most effective strategies to monitor youth activity and teach them how to express
themselves safely and thoughtfully online,” Anscombe continued. “We’re all learning as we go. We
can’t parent today like we were raised, because the Internet simply wasn’t available or as accessible
when we were young.”

Other key findings from Digital Coming of Age include:

  • UK parents are most likely to suspect teens of ‘sexting’ – nearly 25 percent of UK parents suspect their kids of sexting, compared with US (21%), Australia (22%), Spain (21%), Canada (20%), New Zealand (17%), Japan (15%), Italy (11%), France (10%), Czech Republic (13%) and Germany (9%).
  • Spanish parents are (45%) most suspicious their teens are illegally downloading music – compared with parents in the US (19%), Czech Republic (35%), France (30%), UK (28%),Australia and New Zealand (27%).
  • Just under half of parents surveyed are concerned their teens mobile photos are geotagged.
  • Twenty percent of UK and US parents suspect their teens of accessing pornography on their PC – in comparison to over a quarter of Spanish parents.
  • Twenty percent of UK and US parents have seen explicit or abusive messages on their children’s social networks – compared with over 25 percent of Australian and New Zealand parents.

"Boost" Your Knowledge About New Passenger Safety Laws

Most parents and drivers know babies and young children need a car seat to ride safely, but what about older children? Do you know what age limit is required for booster seats? Or that different U.S. states may have different safety laws? Starting January 1, a new Child Passenger Safety law in California will require all children to remain in booster seats until they are eight years old or at least 4’9” tall. To know the laws in your state, visit Governors Highway Safety Association.

Regardless of your state’s laws, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) actually recommends children remaining in booster seats up to age 12. Booster seats ensure that the belt fits properly and comfortably across a child's shoulder and breastbone, and correctly positions the lap portion of the belt across the top of a child’s legs. Luckily, Evenflo has a wide range of booster seats ranging from harnessed to belt-positioning in high back and no-back to meet the needs and personalities of pre-school and school-aged children who may be reluctant about sitting in a booster seat. The new SecureKid 300 and 400 models, Big Kid High Back and Amp High and No-back seats blend fashion and function by embodying a child's personal style and keeping them safe and secure in the vehicle.

My Take on the Evenflo Seat
I was able to try out the Evenflo Booster Seat and was very impressed by not only the quality of construction, but also my daughter (who now sits in it everyday states that it is SO comfortable and that it does not hurt her back as her old booster seat with back did. I loved the fact that the seat was affordable and that it had a wide age range so it allows the child to grow with the seat. This was a great seat that I would highly recommend to all!

Winter Driving Tips from General Motors

As it will soon be time to make the drive “over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house,” now is a great time to make sure that you – and your car – and well prepared for winter driving.

While winter driving can be stressful for motorists, from navigating the knee-deep snow and steering clear of accidents on the roadways, it’s also a stressful time for your car. Imagine having to wake up from a frozen sleep with the turn of a key and set off trudging through the ice, snow and slush of winter driving moments later.

To make sure your winter driving is as smooth as possible for you and your car, GM Consumer Advocate James Bell has prepared some tips to get you ready for that drive to and you’re your grandmother’s house this holiday season.

Five tips to prepare your carfor winter driving:

1. TIRES: Be sure your tires are ready for winter driving and have sufficient tread depth. All tires have a weather rating specifying the weather conditions the tire is designed to perform best in. Depending on where you live and the winter climate, you may need to update your tires to the correct specification for your driving needs. This may mean a M+S (mud+snow) rating would give you the best performance in inclement weather.

Some areas with a lot of snow and ice may require studded tires or snow chains to travel in higher elevations during the winter months.

Also, be sure there is sufficient tire pressure as air pressure can drop by 15 percent in the cold weather.

2. FLUIDS: Be sure the various fluids and oils in your car are the right specification and level for winter driving. This includes your engine oil, which may require a lower viscosity rating for colder temperatures, and your engine coolant (anti-freeze) is suitable for cold weather. Improper or old coolant may not adequately protect your engine from the freezing temperatures.

Make sure you have all-season windshield washer fluid and your reservoir is full.

Preparing for winter is also a great time to have a dealer mechanic check your car over to make sure that not only your fluids and oils are up to spec for the winter, but to also check other fluids, such as your car’s brake and transmission fluids to make sure they are in good condition and properly filled.

One last note about fluids: Keep your gas tank at least one-half full. As moisture can accumulate in your vehicle’s gas tank, maintaining a full to half-full tank of gasoline can prevent fuel line freeze-up. That may keep your car from starting in the cold weather and result in a call to the local towing company to get your car into the service center.

3. BATTERY: If there is one system on your car working overtime in the winter, it’s your car’s battery and electrical system. Did you know it can take as much as five-times the cranking energy to start a cold engine in freezing temperatures versus an engine in the summer?

That’s why it’s important to have your battery checked by a mechanic to determine its condition and if it needs to be replaced before winter. Just like the old saying, paying a little now can save you a lot later if you have to have your car towed or need to have additional items repaired due to the lack of proper electrical current available from a weakened battery.

If you are driving one of the new electric or range-extended electric vehicles, be sure to keep a charging system with you at all times and plug-in whenever possible to keep your traction batteries changed and the batteries warm. Just like your starter battery, traction batteries can lose their charge capacity in the colder temperatures.

4. WINDSHIELD WIPERS and FLOORMATS: Among the hazards of driving in winter weather, is the potential loss of visibility due to snow and ice accumulating on your windshield. Making matters worse, it’s often difficult to tell if your windshield wipers are worn out until you need them – like during a snowstorm!

A simple rule of thumb is to replace your car’s windshield wipers in the spring and in the fall. If you have a rear wiper, it’s best to replace it too, along with the front wiper blades.
Many top brands now make winter-specific windshield wiper replacements that have a solid rubber coating to prevent the blades from freezing and more able to conform to the curve of the windshield to provide a more thorough cleaning of the glass surface.

While you’re picking up some new wiper blades, why not checkout some all-season floor mats. While many cars now offer carpeted mats as standard equipment, a rough winter can really take their toll. All-season mats, made of durable rubber, can be easily removed and cleaned with a garden hose and scrub brush. And if you’re stuck, they can be used to provide you some extra traction.

5. VEHICLE INSPECTION: While most people might not think of taking the time to have a professional give your vehicle a winter inspection, having your dealer service center or trusted mechanic perform a pre-winter inspection is more than just a good idea, it could save you money and headaches in the long run.

Items, such as a cracked windshield or scratch in your car’s paint, could worsen dramatically due to the fluctuations in temperature. What might be a small blemish in the fall could turn into a significant issue by spring. Therefore, it may pay to have those items identified and repaired before winter.

Now is also a good time to check your vehicle’s exterior and interior lamps. This includes headlamps, side marker lamps and turn signals, and the rear tail lamps and brake lights. When the weather is bad, it’s best to see clearly and to be seen!

Five tips to prepare youfor winter driving:

1. BE PREPARED: Like the old scout motto, be prepared for anything winter can dish out to you, including being stranded or stuck in the snow. That means take along an extra pair of gloves and boots, and other items, such as a blanket, flashlight, jumper cables, a portable shovel, and ice melt are all good things to store in your car’s trunk for the winter.
Should you get stuck you will have the tools you need to hopefully dig yourself out and keep yourself warm. It’s also good idea to have a package of hand warmers and some snack food in the glove compartment in case you get stuck in the snow and are outside for a prolonged period of time.

Be sure to have a cell phone and charger in case you need to call for help.

2. HAVE A LIFELINE: It’s a good idea to have a lifeline to you and your car in case of an emergency. Systems such as OnStar can connect you to 24-7 trained emergency personnel who can help you in case of an emergency. These systems use dedicated cellular connections and can activate automatically after an accident. They can also pinpoint your exact location if you are lost or cannot be seen from the road, as in the case of sliding into a ditch or in whiteout conditions.

OnStar now offers the FMV mirror, which can be installed in virtually any vehicle, and offers most of the features of the full OnStar system, including accident alert and 24-7 emergency response.

3. WINTER TOOLS – A GOOD ICE SCRAPER:It’s essential to keep the proper winter tools to keep your car ready for driving in the winter weather. A good snowbrush and ice scraper is a must-have for clearing snow and ice from your vehicle. Be sure to clear all of your windows of ice and snow before driving, and remember to clear away ice and snow from your headlamps, turn signals, brake lights – including the high center-mounted brake light – and your license plates. Also, be sure to stow ice scrapers in a safe place while to make sure it doesn’t get in the way while driving or injure someone in an accident.

4. KNOW YOUR CAR’S SAFETY FEATURES:All cars sold today – and many cars on the road – now have various forms of traction and braking control systems. It is essential to know which of these systems are installed on your vehicle and to know how to use them properly.

Anti-lock brakes – are designed to prevent your wheels from skidding on dry, wet or icy surfaces. For vehicles without an anti-lock braking system, the best way to control a vehicle sliding on icy surfaces is to pump the brakes to safely bring the vehicle to a stop. For cars with anti-lock brakes, the system does that for you, so apply a constant firm pressure on the brake pedal and the system automatically applies the correct brake pressure to bring the car to a stop without locking up the wheels.

Traction Control – is a system that works opposite to anti-lock brakes. Instead of gradually easing your car to a stop, traction control gradually applies power to the drive wheels in a way that prevents wheel spin. The proper way to drive with traction control is to go ahead and drive as you normally would, with the exception that no matter how much you press the accelerator, the car will moderate acceleration to move the car without spinning the wheels.

Note that traction control systems are switched on by default. That means the system is automatically engaged when you start your car but can be turned off in certain situations, such as if you’re stuck in snow and needed to rock your vehicle to get out. In those cases, turn the “TC” switch to off until you have safely dislodged your vehicle. Turn the system back on before you continuing driving.

Electronic Stability Control (ESC) – are systems, such as GM’s StabiliTrack, which merge technologies such as anti-lock braking and traction control, to provide additional safety when driving in inclement weather. The systems are beneficial while driving and can sense when a car is beginning to lose control. ESC will simultaneously divert power and apply braking to affected wheels to regain proper vehicle direction and stability. Again, ESC is on by default, and while it may be switched off in certain conditions, it should be activated when driving in inclement conditions.

5. STAY ALERT – while coffee and cider might be good to keep drivers feeling fresh and alert while driving home from grandmother’s house, it’s also a good idea to know your vehicle’s emergency alert, weather and navigation systems. This is especially true if you are going on an extend drive along unfamiliar roads.

If your car has a navigation system, be sure to familiarize yourself with how it works, if it has an emergency weather or traffic alert system, be sure you know how to activate it and access it when it provides alerts.

For cars that do not have these advanced navigation or emergency radio systems installed, check ahead for local traffic alert frequencies to tune into on your car’s AM band. Either way, the traffic and weather alerts can be a lifesaver, warning drivers of whiteout and black ice conditions, and to help avoid potentially very dangerous driving conditions.
With that, plan your route, and let others know where you will be traveling and when you’ll arrive.

William Shatner & Exploding Turkeys - Holiday Safety Advice from State Farm

William Shatner. Veteran thespian. Accomplished author. Song stylist. Master of the spoken word. Turkey fryer burn survivor.

His contributions to the entertainment industry are numerous, but an accident with a turkey fryer several years ago made him more than just a hot celebrity. He was a man on fire, literally, and he doesn’t want it to happen to you.

“I love to fry turkey and have been doing it for years but I am not immune to frying accidents,” says Shatner. “In fact, my family now gathers together to watch my mishaps. Several years ago I was even burned on my arms after accidently dropping the turkey in the hot oil. People need to remember that hot oil and turkey can be a dangerous combination.”

To warn others in the Shatnerverse that these turkey fryer accidents actually do happen, Shatner is teaming with insurance giant State Farm® to produce a short online “docudrama” recounting his experiences.

“Only one person was truly capable of getting this important message across in a fun way. The fact that Mr. Shatner actually experienced a turkey fryer accident only brought more realism to his portrayal,” said David Beigie, State Farm Public Affairs Vice President. “In all seriousness, he’s been a good sport in helping us get the word out about frying safely.”

You can see Shatner’s work on the State Farm YouTube Channel. Fans are encouraged to join Shatner’s “Fryers Club” by liking or commenting on the video. In doing so, viewers are committing to take Shatner’s advice to stay safe if they fry a turkey. “Ignorance is the friend of accidents,” says Shatner. “Be enemies with ignorance.”

According to State Farm claims data, more cooking fires occur on Thanksgiving than any other day of the year. In fact, grease and cooking-related claims more than double on Thanksgiving Day compared to an average day in November.

AAA: Watch Your Step! Halloween Deadliest Night of the Year for Pedestrians

Every Halloween, monsters, zombies and ghouls fill the streets across the United States to celebrate. And if that’s not scary enough, AAA uncovered some frightening statistics. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, October 31 is the deadliest night of the year for pedestrians.

“On Halloween, motorists need to be especially vigilant between the hours of 4 p.m. and midnight, when pedestrians are most vulnerable,” said Jennifer Huebner Davidson, AAA manager of traffic safety advocacy. “Slowing down, watching for trick-or-treaters who may cross between cars or mid-block and designating a sober driver may save a life.”

To help make the roadways safer this Halloween, AAA offers motorists a few easy tips:
  • Avoid neighborhood shortcuts. If possible, avoid cutting through residential streets where trick-or-treaters are likely to be present. When providing directions to a party, try not to route guests through neighborhoods unnecessarily.
  • Watch for children in the street. Watch for children walking on streets, medians and curbs. Excited trick-or-treaters, often in dark costumes, may not pay attention to traffic and cross mid-block or between parked cars.
  • Slow down. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, a pedestrian is more than twice as likely to be killed if they’re hit by a car traveling at 35 mph compared to 25 mph.  What seems like a small difference—just 10 mph—can be the difference between life and death
  • Drive sober.  Alcohol-impaired drivers make up about one-third of all motor vehicle deaths resulting in an average of one death every 45 minutes. Always designate a sober driver if you plan to drink. Visit www.PreventDUI.AAA.com to learn more.
A few simple steps can help parents keep their trick-or-treaters safe, too:
  • Trick-or-Treat together.  AAA recommends that parents accompany young trick-or-treaters at least until the age of 12.

  • Make a plan. Review trick-or-treating safety precautions and plan the route ahead of time. Remind children never to cross the street mid-block or between parked cars.
  • Check costumes. Choose disguises that don't obstruct vision and opt for non-toxic face paint instead of masks. Check and adjust the length of costumes to avoid tripping and add reflective material or tape to keep kids visible.
  • Buckle up.  If driving trick-or-treaters between neighborhoods, always use appropriate car seats and have children exit and enter on the passenger side of the vehicle.

As North America's largest motoring and leisure travel organization, AAA provides more than 52 million members with travel, insurance, financial and automotive-related services. Since its founding in 1902, the not-for-profit, fully tax-paying AAA has been a leader and advocate for the safety and security of all travelers. AAA clubs can be visited on the Internet at AAA.com.

SwimZip Offers Style and Great Sun Protection for Young Kids

About the Swimsuit
SwimZip is an easy-on, easy-off UV 50+ protective swim shirt for children. The full front zipper and sewn in protective collar make changing little ones a breeze. The no-pinch zipper flap, tagless neck, and flat seams makes wearing the swimwear comfy! SwimZip's material is chlorine resistant too! Our swimwear protects young children from harmful UV rays.

I asked the owner where this idea came from and she shared the following:

Why did you start SwimZip?
I was diagnosed with skin cancer at the age of 26. Growing up in Kansas I spent countless hours swimming at the lake, running around at soccer tournaments in the dead of summer, and sunbathing until I burned. Doctors are finding 90% of all cancerous sun exposure happens before a person turns 18 years old. I wish I would have listened to my Mom back then and lathered up with sunscreen; if I could go back in time, I would. Since being diagnosed with skin cancer I have made it a priority to educate children and parents about the dangers of UV rays. SwimZip perfectly blends my loves of fashion, function, health, and kids. From someone who knows firsthand the dangers of too much sun exposure: "Please keep your children protected from the sun!"

My #1 goal is to keep children safe from the sun by getting a SwimZip into every child's household around the world!

SwimZip Founder,
Betsy Johnson

My Take on the Swimsuit
I decided to share with you my thoughts on this in a video, hope that you enjoy!
