Book Review - There's Going to Be a Baby

 photo disclaimer_zpsd3x74ej2.jpg

About the Book
In a first-time creative pairing, two of the world’s most treasured picture book creators offer a truly delightful book for new-siblings-to-be.

When is the new baby coming? What will we call it? What will he do? We don’t really need a baby, do we? With sensitivity and wit, John Burningham follows the swirl of questions in the mind of a young child anticipating a baby sibling with excitement, curiosity, and just a bit of trepidation. In perfect tandem, Helen Oxenbury captures the child’s loving interactions with his mother — along with the fanciful future scenarios he imagines for the new family member he has yet to meet. Combining a warm, timeless story with illustrations both freshly enchanting and wonderfully nostalgic, this gorgeous book has all the hallmarks of a classic.

My Take on the Book
What a precious story. If your family is preparing to introduce a new baby into your lives, I believe the context of this book will be a great way to open up a discussion about the new baby.

In the story you will 'hear" the brother's comments about what he thinks about as the day draws closer and closer to his new sibling arriving. You will see how the big brother's imagination takes off in many directions as he and his mom have discussions. He shows his curiosity.

The author's sensitivity to the issue of a new sibling is evident as you proceed through the story. I love the last page in this book. As the older brother and grandpa are visiting the baby in the hospital , they have a discussion. The little boy says: we're going to love the baby, aren't we?

My Take on the Product
I have used a number of Pack 'N Play products n the past, but this was the first Jump and Learn type of product that I was able to try. I have to say that in receiving this, I was impressed with first how easy it was to put together. Second though, were the number of activities that you are able to do with this product! The PR states 45 activities and while I have yet to identify all 45, this does offer a large number of activities that your child can do while bouncing away! Third, the product is well constructed, and when you do get it together you will see that the product itself bounces well, which will allow any young child to move and groove while having fun with the toys on the product itself! The product is lightweight and smaller than some other exersaucers that are on the market. Overall, I was excited to try this out and am very impressed with the overall construction and the activity that it promotes in young children!

Could Putting Your Baby At Risk Be A Price Of Beauty?

Could Putting Your Baby At Risk Be A Price Of Beauty?
By Sonia Alvarado, CTIS Pregnancy Health Information Line Counselor

What do you know about the safety of the cosmetics you use on your face and body every day? I’m not talking just about foundation and lipstick, I’m talking about face cream, body lotion, stretch mark cream, skin lighteners, shampoo, and conditioner? Do you read the labels of all the products that you buy? What about those creams/lotions that you get as gifts?

On March 6, the FDA had a press release alerting consumers and retailers about mercury poisoning/toxicity in women and in some cases, the entire family, as a result of exposure through skin lightening creams that had been brought into the country and were foreign made. A search of the medical literature found reports of mercury toxicity related to creams/lotions manufactured in Mexico and China/Hong Kong/Asia, although the FDA site reports that these products have also been sold illegally in the United States in shops found in Latino, Asian, African or Middle Eastern neighborhoods. Online shops have no borders, so the potential of getting a tainted product may be higher.

Mercury is divided into three types – elemental, inorganic and organic. Organic is the kind that you find polluting streams and fish (methyl mercury).

Inorganic mercury is the type that is found primarily in batteries. It’s also been reported in some disinfectants, health remedies/homeopathic remedies and skin creams/acne/lighteners (illegally). Inorganic mercury can be labeled as mercuric chloride, mercuric acetate, and mercuric sulfide. In the case of lotions containing inorganic mercury, not only is the user exposed, but the entire household may be at risk as the metal containing lotion is exposed to air, becomes a vapor, and members inhale it (or ingest it).

Exposure to inorganic mercury and organic mercury through a route that could result in toxicity is a concern for the entire family, including pregnant women. It’s important to understand, however, that each type of mercury has potential risks depending on the route of exposure and the dose. Some forms are more readily available (absorbed into the body) if inhaled and some more available in the body if ingested.

Mercury crosses the placenta. High levels in the mom would be expected to produce high levels in the developing embryo or fetus. High levels of exposure in pregnancy have been associated with spontaneous abortion (miscarriage). Studies of high levels of methyl mercury exposure (the kind typically found in fish) have been associated with neurologic disorders in the exposed infants/children (see http://www.otispregnancy.org/files/methylmercury.pdf). Studies of methyl mercury in pregnancy or children are more common than studies of inorganic mercury related to exposure in cosmetics or imported homeopathic remedies or others, leaving a gap in our awareness and ability to treat those individuals that have been exposed. This also means that it is difficult to know the levels that may be more or less harmful to the developing pregnancy.

Symptoms of mercury toxicity in the early stages include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Symptoms of high acute exposure or chronic long-term exposure include kidney problems, gastroenteritis, metallic taste in the mouth, hypotension and shock, rashes and excessive sweating as well as others.

The FDA advisory reminds us of the importance of reading labels and understanding the potential risks with using hygiene products or cosmetics products (or supplements, herbal remedies, etc.) that are foreign-made. Per the FDA:

  • Check the label of any skin lightening, anti-aging or other skin product you use. If you see the words “mercurous chloride,” “calomel,” “mercuric,” “mercurio,” or “mercury,” stop using the product immediately.
  • If there is no label or no ingredients are listed, do not use the product. Federal law requires that ingredients be listed on the label of any cosmetic or drug.
  • Don’t use products labeled in languages other than English unless English labeling is also provided.
  • If you suspect you have been using a product with mercury, stop using it immediately. Thoroughly wash your hands and any other parts of your body that have come in contact with the product. Contact your health care professional or a medical care clinic for advice.
  • If you have questions, call your health care professional or the Poison Center at 1-800-222-1222; it is open 24 hours a day.
  • Before throwing out a product that may contain mercury, seal it in a plastic bag or leak-proof container. Check with your local environmental, health or solid waste agency for disposal instructions. Some communities have special collections or other options for disposing of household hazardous waste.

We should probably extend the discussion to U.S.-made products as well. Cosmetic products in the U.S. are, unfortunately, not regulated by the FDA. Furthermore, while companies are required to properly label products, the FDA does not pre-approve cosmetic product labeling either. It is illegal to sell misbranded cosmetics in the U.S., but, again, the FDA does not regulate or approve “cosmetic” products.

Cosmetics are commonly used during pregnancy and typically a low concern to the pregnancy due to expected low absorption into the bloodstream and therefore low exposure to the pregnancy but it can’t hurt to be cautious and take a second look at the products we are using especially in light of recent FDA warning.

So I’ll end with some important questions we should all be asking….How much do we know about the short-term and long-term use of chemicals in the cosmetic products that we use everyday? How much are we as consumers willing to pay for this type of evidence, and how long are we willing to wait for it?

For more detailed information on cosmetics, please visit the FDA website: http://www.fda.gov/Cosmetics/default.htm

My Take on the Baby Bullet
I have always been intrigued by the Magic Bullet though I have never tried it, and when I had the opportunity to try this out I jumped at it. I mean who does not want to save some time and money on providing healthy, food for their baby? I know that when my girls were young we were constantly lamenting on the cost of baby food when we knew we could make it on our own for so much less. The challenge was not having something that could do this for us outside of a huge blender which is bulky and not always the easiest to clean.

Enter the Baby Bullet. This product comes with everything that you will need to start making the baby food that you could only imaging making for yourself in the past and the blog that they have (See links posted above) were amazing and the recipes sounded even good for adults in many cases! The product was very easy to setup and use and as it stated I found that I could easily make what I wanted in only about 3 minutes. The product comes with some great storage or freezer containers which makes your life as a parent that much easier and you can take some extra time on one day and have food that will last you for days and weeks to come.

If you have ever wanted to save money through the making of your own baby food, put down the blender and look at using the Baby Bullet, you will not be disappointed!

Developmental Milestones: Why They’re So Important In Your Child’s Life

Developmental Milestones: Why They’re So Important In Your Child’s Life

By Alfred Romeo, RN, PhD

As a health care professional, few things are more rewarding than when a new health-promotion program emerges. This is true especially in cases where the program has the potential to make a huge difference in the lives of children. Please allow me to introduce you to one of those programs. In Utah, the Pregnancy Risk Line is partnering with the “Learn the Signs. Act Early.” campaign in an effort to help parents of young children learn about healthy development. The free tools and checklists on the website―http://health.utah.gov/utahactearly―help parents determine if their children have reached important milestones for growth and development.

Parents may be familiar with some of the more common milestones, such as learning to walk and talk, but there are others that parents may not know about, such as the child responding to his/her name being called or pointing at objects. Missed milestones can be symptoms of developmental delays, which could be associated with more serious medical conditions. Parents who suspect missed milestones should make an appointment with their regular health care clinician and ask about the results of the last developmental screening test. Research has shown that children who are identified and treated earlier have better outcomes in development, school performance, and social skills.

The “Learn the Signs. Act Early.” campaign was developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Currently, Utah, Alaska, Missouri, and Washington are the only states that have launched the campaign, in an effort by the CDC to test various marketing methods and materials. The research, which will include surveys from the start and end of the grant-funded campaigns, will test to see if parents understand what to do when they have concerns about their children.

The partnership between the Utah Department of Health Pregnancy Risk Line and Utah’s “Learn the Signs. Act Early.” campaign is just one example of how teratology (the study of birth defect-causing exposures) information specialists across North America are working to make sure you have the healthiest pregnancy and child possible. Your phone call with one of the specialists may be brief, but you should feel confident knowing that there are many years of work that have gone into providing the answers you will get on that call. So don’t hesitate to call your local service or the North American toll-free number provided by the Organization of Teratology Information Specialists (OTIS).

As a nurse, I’ve worked in newborn intensive care units to treat infants with birth defects, taught college health classes to promote healthy pregnancies, worked with young adults with disabilities to help them be better self-advocates, and trained doctors to improve their screening processes for developmental delays, including autism. I currently work on three different projects: the Pregnancy Risk Line, the “Learn the Signs. Act Early.” campaign, and our Medical Home program. Similar to my OTIS colleagues in other states, I serve on boards and committees for OTIS, the Utah Parent Center, the Utah chapter of the National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (NOFAS), and other organizations. We stay involved in a variety of organizations to learn new information, train other professionals, and help parents find resources. All of these duties, and the constant search for new funding, keep all of us busy, but we have someone standing by, during regular business hours, to answer your phone calls with the latest research-based information.

Speaking of research, OTIS is involved with several studies. These and other studies help us find the best answers to the never-ending list of questions about medications, diseases, and other things a mother may be exposed to during her pregnancy that could harm her or her baby. Currently, OTIS is conducting research on vaccines, including the human papillomavirus (HPV), meningitis, and influenza vaccines. Also, OTIS is conducting studies on medications used to treat asthma and autoimmune conditions like Crohn’s disease and arthritis. We realize that women are busy and may have concerns about volunteering for one more thing. The few minutes of your time on the phone with us will help us find even more ways to protect moms-to-be and develop new health-improving programs. So when you have questions, you can be confident that OTIS is working with you to make sure we have the right answers.

Sometimes women may feel that their questions are not important enough for them to call and ask us, but we look forward to the opportunity to answer those questions, based on your particular situation, to help you provide the best possible start for your child.

Alfred Romeo, RN, PhD, works at the Pregnancy Risk Line, a partnership between the Utah Department of Health and the University of Utah. Visit the website at www.pregnancyriskline.org. The Pregnancy Risk Line is an affiliate of the Organization of Teratology Information Specialists (OTIS), a non-profit with affiliates across North America. Utah women with questions or concerns about pregnancy or breastfeeding exposures can call 1-800-822-2229. Outside Utah, please call OTIS at 1-866-626-6847.

Book Review - Safe in the Arms of Love

About the Book
For the over four million babies that are born in the United States each year, nothing is more important than creating a strong bond with their parent.  Yet with demands of modern life, many of today’s parents are not sure just how to create that bond.  Safe in the Arms of Love combines beautiful, intentionally designed music, heartwarming lyrics, and an accompanying book full of essential and easy to understand information on the importance of how healthy attachment builds a secure emotional foundation for a child’s entire life.

Endorsed by leading authorities such as Deepak Chopra, M.D., Christiane Northrup, M.D., Dean Ornish, M.D., Marshall Klaus, M.D. and Phyllis Klaus, MFT, LMSW, the music and book package is the first release from producers Resonant Sounds, LLC, which creates products utilizing Positive Intention Music™ to help parents experience healthy bonding with their baby.

Developed by sound healer and songwriter Lisa Rafel, Emmy-winning composer Gary Malkin, and clinical psychologist Dr. David Surrenda, the book and CD are designed to relax both parent and child, allowing them to form the deep heart connection that is the essence of the bonding experience.

“The music is intended for use during pregnancy and after the baby is born, while nursing, putting the baby to sleep, or to create a moment in the day that is just between the parent and the child,” says Lisa Rafel, songwriter and founder of Resonant Sounds, LLC.  “The lyrics were written from a place of deep love and connection, and are meant to evoke those emotions within the parent as she or he interacts with their infant.”

Dr. David Surrenda, whose deep knowledge of the parent-child relationship informs much of the book, says, “Bonding is one of the most important steps in a child's development, helping him or her to build strong and meaningful relationships in the future.  We wanted to create a clear reference point for parents to learn this natural and universal experience.

The music in Safe in the Arms of Love was intentionally composed to facilitate bonding using Positive Intention Music™.  “By utilizing psychoacoustics and sound healing principles, we are helping to create a peaceful, attentive, heart filled atmosphere where both parent and baby can become emotionally connected,” says Gary Malkin.
  • How to create a heartfelt and intimate connection with baby
  • What the bonding experience physically feels like – and helps parents come into that state through visualization and breathwork
  • The power of Positive Intention Music™, which utilizes the principles of tempo, pitch and intention to scientifically calm a mother’s heart and increase the connection between mother and child

Safe in the Arms of Love will be available at major booksellers on (April 1, 2011).  Advance copies are available for review purposes only.

My Take on the Book
As a parent you are always looking for those special moments that you can capture and make memories. This book provides you with a road map to how a parent can start having these moments from before the moment your child is born to the early days after their birth to days, months and years to come.

Written with easy to read short chapters that explain things well and in many cases give step-by-step instructions for how one should take the steps that they need to make these bonding moments happen. I can tell that any new parent would find this book as a wonderful addition to their collection. The music also is a wonderful addition to the book and each track provides the reader some solace in their bonding time.

Whether it is for yourself, or given as a gift this book is one I would highly recommend!

Book Review - Adoption Nation

About the BookFor generations, Americans have adopted more than 130,000 children annually from within the United States and from abroad. That means more than 100 million people in our country today have adoption in their immediate families – and nearly everyone is connected to this extraordinary, misunderstood, controversial, life-altering institution in some way.

Adoption Nation: How the Adoption Revolution is Transforming Our Families – and America (The Harvard Common Press, April 2011, 352 pages, ISBN 978-1-55832-716-0, $16.95 paperback) takes on the challenge of explaining the historic changes enveloping us all – and does so with a unique combination of engaging prose, gripping stories, insightful perspective and exceptional research.
Its author, Adam Pertman, is one of the most influential experts in his field and Adoption Nation has been called “the most important book ever written on the subject.”
Inspired by his Pulitzer-nominated series while a reporter with the Boston Globe, the first edition of Adoption Nation (2000) captured an important piece of U.S. history and was a game-changer for child welfare professionals, policy-makers, and members of what Pertman calls “the extended family of adoption” (adopted individuals, birth and adoptive relatives).
The new, fully revised edition updates the “adoption revolution” with all of its joys and disappointments, its personal and policy issues, its complexities and controversies.
“There’s no exaggerating how much has occurred over the last decade – from the adoptive mother who recently ‘returned’ her son to Russia, to the children orphaned by the earthquake in Haiti; from the ongoing debate over transracial adoptions, to the still-unregulated Wild West of adoption on the Internet; from the decline in secrecy and shame in adoption, to the explosion of reunions between adopted people and their birth families; and from the precipitous drop in international adoptions to the soaring rise in adoptions of boys and girls from foster care, including by growing numbers of gay and lesbian parents,” said Pertman. “When I looked at the landscape, I felt compelled to do a thorough rewrite of the stories, of the research and of the phenomenon itself.”
More comprehensive, more up-to-date, more moving – and more useful – than any other book on the subject, the new edition of Adoption Nation is an invaluable resource for prospective and current parents and their children. And it is a passionate call-to-arms for equality and social justice, as well as a unique tool for educators, policymakers and professionals.

My Take on the Book
I can see how this book would be a great book for anyone considering adoption to expand their own family. The book itself is filled with great resources and ideas and is so easy to read and follow. Though I am not an adoptive parent, I know a number of people that are and know all of the hoops and the bureaucracy they had to deal with in the process of becoming a family.  You always hear of all of the children that are out there that need families, but I always have found it sad to hear how hard it is for would-be parents to actually become parents.

What I liked about this book was that was full of amazing honesty and passion. The author brings to the page excellent writing as well personal experiences with adoption that make the reader simply want to read more and learn more about all of the things that surround issues regarding adoption and the steps that they will be going through as they go through the adoption process.

DR. LAURA JANA’S EXPERT TIPS FOR HEADING HOME WITH YOUR NEWBORN

New parents are filled with joy and excitement upon bringing home their newborn, yet this time can also be overwhelming. To help address the anxiety that new moms face during this time, Playtex partnered with Dr. Laura Jana, a renowned pediatrician and co-author of the award-winning, newly released second edition of the book, Heading Home With Your Newborn: From Birth to Reality. Here, Dr. Jana provides some simple tips to help new parents adjust to parenthood and the important role they play in feeding their newborns.

·     Go with the Flow with the Feedings:  Getting babies to follow some semblance of a feeding schedule is subject of great interest to many parents of newborns. It helps to remember that not everyone eats the same thing, in the same amount, at the same time, day in and day out--and babies are no exception! Prepare for a reasonable amount of variation in the amount your baby eats as you establish a routine with your baby. Focus your attention on making sure that your newborn is waking up every few hours to feed and is getting enough to eat to gain weight and grow as expected.

·     Babies, Bubbles and Burping:  Gas, colicky symptoms and spit-up are some of the most common feeding challenges new moms face. If you find yourself faced with a gassy baby, try burping your baby halfway through the feeding as well as after.  Also try to reduce the amount of air your baby swallows while feeding by responding to your baby’s cues that he’s hungry before he really starts crying to keep him from swallowing extra air.  To further reduce colicky symptoms, gas and spit-up, consider using a bottle that doesn’t interfere with an infant’s natural suck, swallow and breathing patterns or cause the baby to swallow extra air. A bottle system like Playtex® Drop-Ins® that allows babies to suck more naturally and without extra air -similar to how they would when breastfeeding - can help make the bottle feeding experience smoother and less likely to cause gas, colic and spit up.

·     Prevent Nipple Confusion:  While most new parents have heard of (and often dread) the words “nipple confusion,” many are not actually clear on what nipple confusion really is. Simply put, some babies adjust to the use of an artificial nipple better than others. For those babies who will be going back and forth between the breast and the bottle, the potential “confusion” between sucking the two types of nipples can pose a bit of a problem. Look for a bottle with a nipple that allows for age-appropriate flow and is designed to more closely resemble the breast – helping babies avoid any unnecessary confusion and thus facilitating a much smoother transition to successful bottle-feeding.

·     Moms on the Go: If you know you’re going back to work or traveling, try introducing the bottle several weeks before, so you can address any challenges in advance.  Experiment with different bottles and nipples until you find the one that works best for you and your baby. Using a bottle that allows your baby to continue using a natural sucking motion typically makes it that much easier to switch between bottle and breastfeeding.

·     Decrease Stress:  A new baby and a significant dose of sleep-deprivation is understandably enough to make new parenthood seem a bit overwhelming. To help manage this stress, accept any and all offers of help when it comes to cooking, cleaning, and otherwise maintaining some semblance of order in your new daily routines and don’t be afraid to ask rather than waiting for an offer. The support of a hands-on spouse or family member is important, and for babies who are bottle-fed, simply having someone else take over a single feeding can also afford you a longer uninterrupted stretch of sleep or a couple of very valuable hours in which to feel more caught up and in control.

·     Think Outside the House: There is a lot of advice out there about taking your newborn out of the house with you. While planning your day around your newborn’s anticipated feeding schedule may not always go as planned, it is worth a try. You may increase your odds of success by venturing out just after your baby’s just nursed or taken a bottle, has a clean diaper, and is content. In addition, going out for errands during off-hours or in less crowded places is also a good idea as you and your newborn get the hang of heading out of the house together.

·     Go Pro:  Your pediatrician, a lactation consultant, or other health professionals can all serve as valuable expert resources as you go through many firsts with your new baby.  When it comes to new parenthood, there’s no such thing as a stupid question, and every pediatrician wants to help make feeding your baby, along with all of the other daily activities of parenthood, successful and enjoyable.
