About the Book
Two in every three students who cannot read proficiently by the end of fourth grade will end up in jail or on welfare, reports BeginToRead.com.
They state that one child in four grows up not knowing how to read.
Former Teacher Norma Simpson Wilt is setting out to fight that illiteracy by starting with the nation’s school systems.
“Our country is at stake because we create barriers for our children by placing them on certain academic levels before they are ready,” says Wilt. “To be taught effectively, children should be grouped by readiness rather than age.”
Her exposé focuses on the inner workings of the school system and certain individuals within it who do not necessarily have the welfare of the nation’s children at heart.
Pulling from 17 years of personal experience as a teacher and reading specialist, Wilt hopes to motivate readers to rise and help to redesign the nation’s school systems. She urges us to act now to create an academic environment in which children do not feel inadequate and are inspired to learn.
According to Wilt, much of taxpayers’ money is not actually benefitting the children in school systems and the children, as well as our future as a country, are suffering.
“The illiteracy problem in America is only getting worse, and if we do not act and reform the school systems and teaching practices now, the future of our children and the country at large are going to face dire consequences,” says Wilt. “We are running out of time.”

My Take on the Book
This was an interesting take on the current stake of schools and what the author believes to be the future of education if things do not change. The author brings up some very interesting ideas and presents some very important arguments that everyone today must consider (in my opinion) if our school systems will continue to thrive in the future. The book was an easy read, and as you delve deeper you will be drawn in by the perspectives that the author explores and the examples that she provides. You can truly tell that the author has an education background as she brings this into every aspect of the book.
