Book Review - The Guardian Angel Diary

About the BookGrant Schnarr, in his debut novel The Guardian Angel Diary (Swedenborg Foundation Press, May 14, 2011), introduces us to Nicole Bealart, a typical teenager living in the world of homework, school plays, and her own imagination until her world is turned upside-down when she is diagnosed with brain cancer. Overwhelmed with the problems in her life, she turns to the only one who can help her understand what is happening and why, her guardian angel.

The Guardian Angel Diary explores some very new and very compelling angles regarding the existence of heaven and the possibility of angels watching over us. The book poses the question, do guardian angels exist? When we hear that voice in our head, consoling us or soothing our worries, is it our own voice or the voice of an angel? Can we become our own guardian angel by listening to this inner voice of calm and reason?

There is a growing interest in angels, the afterlife, and our relation to it.  The New York Times has recently written several articles on this new phenomenon.  Heaven is For Real, about an 11 year old by who had a near-death experience, is selling off the shelves and bestselling author James Frey’s upcoming release about a modern day Jesus is causing quite a stir.

After reading The Guardian Angel Diary, Dr. Mehmet Oz said, “Speaking with your guardian angel is just the kind of medicine we should be prescribing.”

Minister and Life-Coach Grant Schnarr draws together voices of young people he has met and counseled to weave a fictional tale of love, fear and hope and teaches us about finding faith in the most unexpected places.

My Take on the BookWhat I loved about this book were the characters within it. The author has done an amazing job developing strong characters that you can relate to. Also, the message in this book was one that was memorable. The idea of writing to your guardian angel was a novel one that I would not have thought of myself.

This book was written in such a way to continually keep my interest. I kept wondering what would be next within this diary. I loved the back and forth dialogue within the book, you truly felt that the young girl was speaking with her guardian angel.

I also enjoyed the varying formats within the book. This book did not follow the normal novel format. Saying this though, I have to say that it was refreshing and I was definitely wrapped into the entire story all of the way to the very end and you will be as well!
