Book Review - The Last Ornament

About the BookFrom the award-winning author of the best selling Christmas book, Celebrate Advent – 25 Legends, comes a children’s book for the fast approaching holiday season. The Last Ornament by Judith Vicary Swisher recounts the story of a family’s tree trimming, with the Christmas ornaments in starring roles.

Christopher and Noelle’s family loves trimming the tree and, as they unwrap the ornaments, they remember why each is so special. Proudly displayed on the Christmas tree for all to admire, the ornaments come to life after a long year packed away in boxes.

The whimsical illustrations delight children as they meet each ornament described throughout the book - What do the little stars do? Can the bells ring? Do the toy clowns dance? Can you hear them talking late at night?

As the holidays come to an end, the tree is taken down, and the family packs everything away again. All the ornaments are put back in their boxes, except one. The ornaments realize that Little Blue Engine is missing. What happened to this most favorite ornament and friend? What can the others do to alert the family?

A story to read with the whole family, The Last Ornament entrances children and adults alike and encourages families to begin a tradition of looking for their own ‘last ornament’ each year.

My Take on the Book
As a family putting up and taking down the Christmas Tree is somewhat of a ritual and something that we all enjoy doing. This book takes this ritual and makes it even more special. This book is one that I can easily see as being a book that we read each Christmas and share the perspectives of Christmas from the ornaments point of view. When I read it to my girls, they simply loved it and asked for more!
