Book Review - Funny Bone Readers

About the Books
Every child knows that some things are right, and some things are wrong. But helping children develop good character is more challenging than teaching right from wrong. With Funny Bone Readers: Developing Character in your classroom or home, children will learn from funny stories and silly characters while making connections to their own actions.

My Take on the Books

This review looks at six books in the FUNNY BONE READER series.  They are definitely child and parent books which will encourage discussion about the issues raised in each book. There are discussion questions at the end of each book to assist you after reading. The illustrations will capture you and your child's attention. The expressions on the characters' faces helps with the understanding of the text. The text is easy to read and understand , and I could see a young reader enjoying not only listening to the story, but to then read the story, with pride, back to the parent.

Let me give you the basic concepts of these six books:

SQUID AND PICKLES, by Jeff Dinardo,  is about bad manners. What do bad manners look like and feel like to an individual on the side of the bad manners. In this book there is one solution the friends use to help their friend to stop using bad manners.

HELPING HANDS, by Anna Prokos, gives illustrations on how you can help others and then in turn the friend reciprocates the help.

THE CLEAN TEAM, by Anna Prokos, will help a child see the importance of learning to be neat not only in self but also the environment. It includes showing the child that littering is wrong.

MISS MOO GOES TO THE BEACH,  by Jeff Dinardo, is a book that shows the importance to plan ahead for an outing or activity. What do you need to organize to take with you, in this instance, to the beach and what do you need to get involved in an activity at the beach.

LYING AROUND, by Anna Prokos, illustrates how telling lies is wrong and it will lead you into trouble with friends and family members. It also shows how forgiveness is needed in order to move forward from the lie. Essentially to be honest is the best avenue to travel.

THE BEST BIRTHDAY GIFT, by Barbara Bakowski , is a story about Nate. This young character learns the importance of listening.

As I read these books I also found ways that the book could be extended, such as: going outdoors together and picking up litter, or plan an outing and let the child suggest a list of things you will need to take on the activity, or to brainstorm other ways you can have bad manners and why it is hurtful.

Why not see how you and your child can use these books together. You will be amazed how these books can touch your child's thinking by just discussing the concepts after reading these delightful books

Enjoy!
