Book Review - Small Town Michigan: Legends, Lore, and Attractions in the Wolverine State

About the Book

Reedy Press is pleased to announce the release of our newest local interest book, Small Town Michigan: Legends, Lore, and Attractions in the Wolverine State, by Amy Piper.

Williamston, Chelsea. Germfask. Indian River. Vicksburg. Grand Haven. These aren’t just dots on a map; they’re small towns brought to life through their stories, legends, and lore.

We’ve seen those picture-perfect small towns where time seems to slow down, shopkeepers remember your name, and neighbors still gather for parades and ice cream socials. But you don’t have to watch a Hallmark movie to find that charm. Small Town Michigan invites you to explore the authentic warmth, character, and heart of Michigan’s often-overlooked communities.

Throughout Michigan’s industrial ups and downs, its waves of settlers and visionaries, small towns have quietly endured. They’ve rebuilt after fires, revitalized main streets, and reimagined old factories as art studios and coffee shops. In every part of the state, from lakefront harbors to inland crossroads, you’ll find places that thrive on connection, creativity, and a sense of pride.

From their founding stories to what it’s like today, each of the 50 towns featured on these pages shares a unique story. You might think you know Michigan, but this book will take you beyond the familiar, revealing hidden gems, local legends, and lore that make each town special.

Wander through historic downtown Chelsea and see a show at actor Jeff Daniels’s Purple Rose Theatre. Take your picture with Benny the Beard Fisher in Germfask, or get your adrenaline going in Indian River’s color corridor with an off-roading side-by-side adventure through Michigan’s hardwood and pine forests with Big Bear Adventures. Explore the tip of the Mitten by boat on Michigan’s inland waterway. Learn about Michigan’s maritime history at the Michigan Maritime Museum with an on-water experience aboard a replica 1810 tall sail sloop.

Let the relaxed pace remind you of what “small town” means. Whether you're planning a weekend getaway, a weeklong adventure, or a fresh way to explore your hometown, Small Town Michigan offers an invitation to reconnect with the heart of the Great Lakes State.

Small Town Michigan is available wherever books are sold.

My Take on the Book
As someone who has lived in Michigan for years and who lives in one of the small towns listed in this book, I thought I already knew most of what the state had to offer, but Small Town Michigan: Legends, Lore, and Attractions in the Wolverine State surprised me at every turn. Amy Piper captures the personality of Michigan’s smaller communities in a way that feels both nostalgic and refreshing. Instead of focusing only on the well-known tourist spots, the book shines a light on the stories, traditions, and hidden treasures that make these towns unforgettable.

What I appreciated most was how each chapter made me want to plan a road trip. From quirky landmarks to rich local history, the book reminds readers that some of the best experiences in Michigan happen far from the bigger cities. The writing is approachable, engaging, and packed with fascinating details that even lifelong Michiganders may not know. This is the kind of travel book you keep nearby because it inspires adventure long after you finish reading.

  • Berlin, where holidays come to life at beloved Christmas markets
  • The Galapagos, where your kids will squeal with joy as they encounter penguins and larger-than-life tortoises
  • Alaska, where you’ll feel you’ve gone truly wild in the last frontier
  • And so much more!
This insider's guide from one of the world’s most traveled families will inspire you to create new and lasting memories with your family for years to come.

My Take on the Book
My kids have always put together bucket lists, so watching a family that has taken this to the next level was always something that they loved, too. What I love is that the family empowers their kids to live largely, and as a part of this, they are also teaching their kids to live with courage, live their lives through their experiences, and not let anything hold them back. While this family has some ability to be mobile while others who read may not, the concept of having dreams and making them happen is inspirational. The book has many relatable tips about traveling, especially traveling with kids. At the same time, the book also has a section on traveling together as a couple, which was a nice add-in. All-in-all this is a book that offers practical and relatable tips that you can use no matter where you are traveling, but also will give you ideas about your next trip, too!

Book Review - Here Not There: 100 Unexpected Travel Destinations

Here Not There: 100 Unexpected Travel Destinations

About the Book
Design a truly unique vacation with 100 intriguing alternatives to more predictable, expensive, and overcrowded destinations.

Let’s face it. These days, many of the world’s most beloved places have become expensive and overcrowded, making their celebrated allure that much harder to enjoy. But fear not: Here Not There helps you create a more robust, off-the-beaten-path vacation by revealing 100 alternative destinations to the standard travel playbook—as well as expert tips on when to visit, where to eat, what to see, and where to stay.

In this surprising collection of lively travel itineraries, you’ll find authentic, unexpected, and rewarding destinations of a lifetime to add to your bucket list, including:
  • A trip to Quito, Ecuador, instead of Lima, Peru, for iconic architecture and top-notch South American cuisine.
  • A road trip along West Virginia’s byways instead of New England’s highways for brilliant autumn colors.
  • A romantic rendezvous to Lecce, Italy, instead of mega-touristed Florence for art, wine, and artifacts.
  • A hiking excursion in Chile’s Lake District instead of England’s for an unexpected natural wonder.
  • A theater-infused visit to Cleveland, Ohio, where the performances match the levels of New York City’s Broadway.
  • A tour of Portugal’s Azores, rather than the Hawaiian islands, for flora, fauna, and underwater adventures.
  • A water-filled excursion through New York’s Thousand Islands instead of a cruise down Germany’s Rhine River.
  • A trip to Detroit to find Art Deco skyscrapers (and even a beach in Motown) that rival those of Miami.
Both surprising and inspiring, Here Not There offers readers a chance to think beyond our typical borders and discover undreamed-of destinations.

My Take on the Book
What was great about this book was that the vacations that you are seeing are ones that are off-the-beaten-path and ones you would not typically consider. Too often in some of these large cities, you gravitate to the large and known locations (and you should in some cases), but this book reminds us that there are a ton of hidden gems that are out there that you should find and explore, as they are worth the search! The book is easy to follow, and while you may not visit everything, I know that for me, I find that this book really opened my eyes to places beyond the places that I have visited in the past, and definitely encouraged me to add new places to my list for the next time I visit and I encourage you to do so too!

My Take on the Product
While I have yet to travel internationally with this, I am impressed with the quality of this device and how easy it is to use. My wife and I have been looking at taking a few trips to countries that I know could cause some havok with my electronics, and seeing that we use them so much, it is very important that I am able to charge them when I need to. I did not have anything that would convert items to an EU plug so this was perfect and what I loved was how small this was which makes it easy to travel with. In the end, when you are a citizen of the United States, traveling to Europe or other countries using anything from 110-240 volts you need to find something that will convert power, and for the price and convenience, this is a perfect product at the perfect price!

I received this item as a review sample, but all my opinions are that of my own.

DVD Review - Families of Italy

About the DVD
You’re invited to visit the country known as Lo Stivale, a.k.a “The Boot,” and to spend some time with two of its young citizens in Families of Italy, the newest title in the award-winning Families of the World series, venturing onto DVD December 13, 2012 from Master Communications.

The series – 28 titles and growing – enables future travelers to reach across the globe and visit other people and cultures, all from a child’s point of view. Always focusing on two children from differing households, one urban, one rural, and narrated by children, Families of the World DVDs invite viewers to follow two families’ daily routines, introducing both the similarities and differences that exist between them, as well as us.

Italy, officially the Italian Republic, is a unitary parliamentary republic in South-Central Europe, the 24th most-developed country and the birthplace of Maritime republics and the Renaissance.

In Families of Italy, we meet Veronica, 14, who lives on a sheep farm in the Italian countryside with her parents, older brother Antonio and younger sister Kiara. Cheese is the family business, processing it right on the property from the milk of their 300 sheep. Kids may envy Veronica a little when they see she sometimes has cookies and milk for breakfast, but maybe not that she attends school six days a week (though Saturdays are half-days). During the week she helps her mother deliver their cheese to the local stores, often stopping by to visit her grandmother in town. Veronica also helps make the family’s favorite dessert, tiramisu, for the midday meal (called dinner), then finishes the 1-2 hours of homework she has every day. After dad has finished milking the sheep in the evening, he joins the family as they walk through nearby Salerno, admiring the Christmas lights that have been put on display for the season. The next day, Veronica takes us to the nearby ancient ruins, including Pompeii, that lie in the shadow of the massive, and (thankfully) quiet, Mt. Vesuvius.

Next we meet 10-year-old Luigi, who lives on an olive plantation with his parents, grandparents (he’s named after his grandfather Luigi) and siblings Antonia and Thomás. Olive oil is the family business, with local farmers coming to their on-site factory next to the house to have their olives pressed. Luigi plays tambourine in a music group and is normally an active boy but is recovering a broken ankle and is sporting a cast (courtesy of the country’s free healthcare). He attends school from September to June from morning until early afternoon, then returns home for dinner before helping round the farm, on which they grow kiwi, walnuts, oranges, pomegranates and a variety of vegetables. Come along with the family as they celebrate the Day of the Dead, during which they visit the tombs of their loved ones, leaving flowers and prayers. Then it’s back home to make pizzas with the grandparents before turning in for the night.

Families of the World is recommended for ages 5-11 and retails for $29.95. The series features families in Afghanistan, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Egypt, France, Ghana, Guatemala, India, Israel, Japan, Kenya, Korea, Mexico (includes Spanish and English soundtrack) and More Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico, Russia, Sweden, Thailand, the USA, the United Kingdom, Vietnam, Germany and the Philippines.

Each DVD includes a free PDF Teacher’s Guide, which features the script, copy-ready maps, discussion and activity guides, recipes, glossaries and more. To order Families of the World DVDs, call 1-800-765-5885 or visit www.familiesoftheworld.com.

My Take on the DVD
This was a great DVD that made the world that much smaller for my family. With the fact that a large amount of my own family was from Italy in the past I loved he fact that this gave my own girls the opportunity to see firsthand what it was like to live and be a child there. The DVD is set up to open the viewers eyes to the differences and similarities of living in Italy which was great and my girls were able to gain such a broader understanding of everything that they have in their own life too. This was a great series that will open your whole family's eyes to the world around them. I highly recommend this to all!

My Take on the Products
We just got back from a trip and I was very happy to have this new kids product with us as my eldest daughter tends to get car sick when we are on longer trips. With the chewable form (which is good tasting so I am told), my daughter was more than willing to take the medicine that she needed to take and the medicine worked as promised as well. In the past when we had her the regular dramamine she always seemed a bit out of it, drowsy, loopy, and most of the time she would fall asleep soon after taking the medicine. I found with this, that I received the results needed for the ease of stomach issues, without the side effects that we had seen in the past (Yeah!). All-in-all, I was quite impressed and so was my daughter, so thank you Dramamine for this new less drowsy version as it really does work!

How to make the most of Disney?

In honor of the happiest-place-on-earth’s 40th anniversary on October 1, the folks at social travel site Gogobot put together this list of the keys to the kingdom: Top Insider Tips to Making the Most of Disney.
Here are the top 5 insider tips, from Gogobot users:

1.       For the older family: Keys to the Kingdom Tour
You have to be at least 16-years-old for this tour. The tour lasts about 4 hours or so and is about $70 on top of park admission. Sure, you can see most of the stuff covered on this tour by watching specials on the Travel Channel. However, if you're a Disney freak like I am, there's simply no comparison to seeing it in person. My favorite part - the "underworld." There's so much that goes on behind, er, under the scenes that you have to see it to believe it!

2.       For adults: Drink around the world
The World Showcase area of Epcot, as you may know, features pavilions from different countries around the world. These pavilions have kiosks that feature local adult beverages and, sometimes, small snacks. You can literally spend an entire day drinking around the world at Epcot. Simply start at one end and begin exploring the food & beverage of countries that most people only dream of going to. You’re sure to have a blast. Cheers!

3.       For the romantic: IllumiNations
This fireworks spectacular takes place every night at closing. It takes place on the lake in the center of the World Showcase. While there are places to see it all around the lake, there are some places that are downright horrible. The better places start to fill up early, so plan accordingly. The China and Germany pavilions recently had changes to the areas overlooking the lake, and make for great viewing.

4.       For kids: Jedi Training Academy
Cheers!

5.       For the aspiring artists: Magic of Disney Animation
While the short movie on how animation is made is well done, the best part is what follows. There is a place to meet characters. Usually the latest or upcoming movie is featured here. Also, Fantasia Mickey is featured here. There are areas to try your hand at coloring a scene, or adding sounds to an animated scene. The cool part is the area where you can learn to draw a Disney character. Often it is one of the Fab Five. The very cool part is that you can keep your drawing. The really very cool part is this is free. And you can come back several times. Perfect for all ages.

Next Generation Private Sale Travel Site Launches

Spire, a new members-only travel site that offers unbeatable, limited-time deals on luxury hotels worldwide, launches today with an expertly-selected lineup of four-and five-star hotel deals that are at least 30% off the lowest offer found anywhere else. Along with these private sales, Spire also introduces a number of firsts such as its Best Deal Guarantee that make the company the most consumer-friendly flash-sale travel site yet.

Directly addressing the most common complaints that travelers have about flash sales, Spire launches with the only Best Deal Guarantee in flash-sale travel. The Guarantee not only promises the lowest price, but it also backs Spire’s pledge to deliver at least 30% off the lowest comparable offer found anywhere else. Spire is also the only site of its kind to allow easy cancellations, giving refunds for up to 72-hours after a trip is booked, minus a $29 fee.

Alan Josephs, CEO of Spire, says these consumer-friendly firsts pave the way for the next generation of limited-time private sale sites and put Spire at the forefront of the flash-sale travel category.

“Consumers want to know that they’re getting the very best deal before they book, and they need more flexibility in instances where spontaneity may have gotten the best of them,” Josephs said. “Our Best Deal Guarantee and simple cancellation policy give travelers what they need to be more confident in their purchase,” he said.

“If a traveler finds an offer that does not meet our best deal standards, Spire will give them $100 in credit to be used on a future booking plus we will refund the difference if they happen to find a lower price elsewhere,” Josephs explains Spire’s one-of-a-kind Best Deal Guarantee.

Other consumer-friendly benefits include Spire Perks, which are valuable extras, such as room upgrades and spa credits, paired with almost every deal. Spire also makes checking airfare simple by including Kayak search functionality and offers the help and expert advice of U.S.- and U.K.-based luxury travel specialists by phone at no charge.

Spire’s Hotel Deals
Despite these slow economic times, a recent poll of 2,215 luxury travelers conducted by Spire revealed that 74% have splurged on their hotel budget in 2011. When asked how they decide where to go on vacation, nearly one-quarter waits until a great deal pops up in a destination they would enjoy.

This shows that consumers seek both luxury and affordability, which Josephs confirms: “Many travelers are still splurging on their hotel budgets, but they are also looking for a deal. Spire works closely with its hotel partners to deliver the deals they need at the luxury hotels they desire.”

Spire’s in-house destination experts evaluate each hotel and resort individually on requirements such as amenities, services, reputation, recommendations, customer reviews, site visits and much more. Only available to registered members, Spire’s private sales last up to 14 days, giving travelers more flexibility and planning power than other flash-sale travel sites.

Here’s a sampling of deals found on Spire now:

§  A Historic Hotels of America boutique property in New York City for $299 per night (was $449)
§  An all-inclusive, eco-friendly resort in Antigua for $275 per night (was $396)
§  A Condé Nast Hot List pick and authentic palace in Morocco for $140 per night (was $279)
§  A Condé Nast Traveler Gold List resort in Riviera Maya for $94 per night (was $140)

To join Spire’s private community and get access to members-only hotel deals, go tospire.com and sign-up for free or go to facebook.com/spiretravel and sign-up through our sweepstakes for a chance to win a 4-night stay at Cavallo Point – The Lodge at the Golden Gate and $2,500 in Spire credit.
