In these workbooks of activities the children will use the Star Wars characters to practice reading comprehension, adjectives, verb tenses, writing a report, identifying sentences, and creative writing. The activities will challenge the child and stretch their minds to use their creative thinking and analysis skills.
Some of the pages require prior knowledge. For example the page in which the child must identify sentences according to simple, compound, and complex could be difficult if these terms have not been learned.
I thought that the two pages where the child must use a glossary page to answer questions was very well done.
The child would definitely need to read carefully and use the skills of knowing how to use a glossary to answer the questions.
The answers are located at the end of the workbook.
I view this workbook as one that could provide a child with some interesting ways to practice skills of reading and writing.
STAR WARS WORKBOOKS, 3RD & 4TH GRADE MATH
To make these workbooks fun, the authors have incorporated the Star Wars characters to practice various math skills. .The pages included math concepts using multiplication, division, problem solving, elapsed time, measuring perimeter and area, and reading graphs. The pages are colorful and easy to read and use.
I feel if the child has learned the various skills , the pages should be fun to work on independently. However, the child may need some assistance with the exact meaning of some of the directions.
All the answers at at the end of the books.
I believe an 8-9 year old child will find this book challenging, fun, and a good way to reinforce and apply learned skills.

My Take on the Program My youngest daughter will be in Kindergarten this fall and want to be able to help her to be able to have a great start, especially when it comes to reading. Diva-PJ has always been a reader even though she could not actually read the words. This program brings together fun lessons, music and funny characters to help children quickly learn reading concepts. I was completely in shock that after only a few lessons my daughter was putting sentences together. We are about a week in and I can already see results. She also sees this as fun and wants to do multiple lessons every day. I am so impressed with what they are doing with this, I can only hope that they continues adding more and more lessons as this will only continue to assist my daughter learn to be even stronger in reading as the years go by! On top of the lessons, the program also adds in some fun interactive components that allow the user to interact with the environment which is also fun. I highly recommend this to all!

Classic literature has a lot to teach us, but over the years the genre and the method of teaching it has developed a reputation for being unapproachable and, well, a bit… intimidating. At the same time, tablet technology has greatly developed and has earned a valuable spot in the classroom, providing many benefits to both students and instructors. Providence eLearning now proudly brings together the classics that are required reading with the latest iPad technology to allow students to engage in a fun, memorable, and multi-sensory learning experience.
Available as highly interactive iBooks for the iPad, Providence eLearning’s current collection includes an educational series of British literature titles including Macbeth, Beowulf, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, The Poetry of William Blake, Frankenstein, and Sonnets. Far beyond your typical eBook, each iBook is designed to make the classic come alive with narration and video lectures by top scholars, interactive glossaries and dictionaries, and quizzes to spark engagement and encourage classroom discussion. Instead of skipping through parts of the book or just “getting through” each page, students are now able to appreciate the rich content as they interact with the story itself. With recent studies showing the many benefits of digitally interactive learning, including higher retention rate, students come to the classroom prepared while teachers value the opportunity for increased participation and enthusiasm.
“Our interactive iBooks have truly carved out a niche as the best source for learning literature,” says Cole Mathisen, eLearning Coordinator at Providence eLearning. “The narrators are top educators who are passionate about their material. We combine their literary expertise with technical expertise to create the ultimate comprehensive and interactive learning experience.”
Providence eLearning iBooks offer:
A revolutionary “flipped” classroom experience, where the student is able to engage with the material at home and participate in classroom discussion
Valuable learning techniques including immersion in literary masterpieces through audio narration, video lectures, and quizzes
Proven benefits for learners, including increased retention rate and engagement inspired by the interactive nature of the learning
Advantages for all types of learners, including visual, auditory, read-write and kinesthetic, as well as those with learning disabilities
A powerful educational tool that harnesses the latest tablet technology
With clear benefits for students, educators, parents and anyone looking to enhance their understanding of the reading, Providence eLearning iBooks blend the treasured classics with the latest technology for a truly unique multi-sensory learning experience. Keep an eye out for their upcoming titles, including The Romantics, Pride and Prejudice, Arthur, The Confessions of St. Augustine, and companions to C.S. Lewis’s works.

For more than 25 years, American Girl’s award-winning books have helped millions of girls discover the joy of reading and have earned the trust of parents and educators. This summer, to celebrate books and encourage girls to keep their reading skills sharp while school is out, American Girl is introducing Read-a-palooza, a summer reading program created for girls ages 8 to 12. Packed with fun activities and incentives that encourage literacy, Read-a-palooza will run from May 1 to September 3, 2012, and also will include a charitable partnership with Save the Children’s U.S. literacy program.
To participate in Read-a-palooza, girls can visit americangirl.com/reading, where they can download colorful bookmarks and free book-related content, such as tips and materials for starting a book club. They’ll also be able to do reading challenges and take fun, interactive quizzes. Starting in June, girls can participate in Read-a-palooza by visiting an American Girl retail store, where free reading events will be offered all summer long.
To further emphasize the importance of reading and to help a great cause during its Read-a-palooza campaign, American Girl is partnering with Save the Children’s U.S. literacy program. From May 1 through September 3, 2012, $1 of every book purchased through American Girl (up to a maximum of $100,000) will support Save the Children’s efforts to raise literacy rates in impoverished communities by providing basic education and equipping schools and teachers with reading materials. In addition, American Girl will make its third donation of books to Save the Children this fall, bringing the value of the company’s total book donation to nearly $1.5 million.

About the Book
Blue 2 is a beautiful cacophony delighting everyone! From a to z each letter gives a clue to where the Blue 2 is hidden in each of these spectacular pop-up sculptures. There's a glistening Blue 2, a slippery Blue 2, and even a suspended Blue 2. With gleeful helixes, jubilant kookiness, and mobile nonsense, each page will stun with its paper pop-up phenomenon. This sequel to One Red Dot is surely one to treasure.
About the Author
David A. Carter is a master paper engineer who created the Bugs series which has sold over 6 million copies for Little Simon . He is the author and illustrator of the critically acclaimed color series featuring One Red Dot, Blue 2, 600 Black Spots, Yellow Square, and White Noise. He lives in Auburn, California, with his wife and two daughters.
My Take on the Book
This book was an amazing collection of three-dimensional pop-ups that kids love. I have both a 3.5 and a 7 year old and all of them loved searching out the Blue 2 on each of the pages. I also love the ideas that this book promotes which is a love for reading, but larger than that, a love for art and an appreciation for detail. The only caution with this book is that some of the three-dimensional pop-ups are a bit delicate and need to be treated with care so that they will not rip. Other than that though this book is definitely one that I would share with all, and being that the book is a Reading is Fundamental Book this year, it stands for beliefs that I my wife and I stand for and that I know many other families do too.

We tried a few of these games with our youngest and she had a blast. She actually asked us to "do it again". which is always a good sign. Adapted from his book, "Raising Confident Readers"
As soon as your baby is born, his brain begins building the neural connections for reading and writing. Age zero to 2 is the age most directly connected with a baby's speech development. A new research study found that reading age-appropriate books to your baby before he learns to talk not only establishes a reading habit later on, but correlates with later expressive language abilities at 12-16 months of age. In other words, reading to your infant helps grow his brain.
For parents who can't imagine how to read to an infant, here are some guidelines that will help.
Don't just talk to your baby--read to her.
Reading aloud increases repetition during a critical period of learning, and provides more words and richer grammar for your child to hear so your baby lays down more elaborate circuits than if you just talked to her. Reading aloud, starting at birth, permanently shapes the function and structure of your baby's brain.
Make reading multisensory.
Reading aloud stimulates more than just language. It stimulates and grows circuitry in many areas of your baby's brain associated with hearing, vision, page turning for motor control, and social/emotional development. Young babies even use their mouths to "experience" the book. Make reading a multisensory event. One parent stimulated large motor skills by walking around with her toddler like a penguin while they read a book about penguins.
Turn reading into a conversation.
Your baby needs face-to-face contact so he can see your lips as you speak and watch your smiles and expressions. Listen for his coos, body movements, smiles, and lip movement--and then respond back. In essence, you are having a happy conversation with your child while engaging with print.
Find a good reading time.
Almost any time is a good time to read to babies. At birth, babies detect the sound of your voice even when they are asleep. Reading during nursing is a good time, and after three months, when babies are alert and awake. Read a few minutes at least twice a day, and stop reading when the baby gets restless.
Don't relegate reading to books alone.
By six months of age, you can label a few objects in the baby's nursery and introduce an activity called "Reading Around Baby's Room." Research shows that babies may understand words five months before they can speak them, and that five-month-olds can recognize and remember a visual stimulus for up to two weeks after seeing it. Write 5-10 words like chair, box, red, hat, and Spot on 5-7 cards and tape them to the object or pet photo. Once your baby starts to show interest in the activity, gradually add more words.
Find age-appropriate books.
The best books for age 0-2 are: wordless picture books; nursery rhyme books; books you can chant; books you can sing; pattern books (easy-to-read books with predictable, repeated patterns of text); board books (sturdy cardboard books that withstand baby handling); soft cloth books; storybooks; information books; and books with textured illustrations for touching.

My Take on the DVDI had reviewed Phonics 1 in the past and found this to be great for pre-K students, and Phonics 2 is a great follow-up to the first DVD going into more complex words and concepts. My daughter is going into first grade this next year and I can tell that this would be a great DVD for any first grade student.
With the use of great music and repetition, this DVD hits home the point of the importance of learning to read. What I loved about this DVD is that it makes reading fun, and I can tell that as a child you would just want to watch this to "rock out" as well as simply having fun with the on-screen characters.
All-in-all, this DVD provides kids a great way to learn!
