Book Review - Hamilton and Me: An Actor’s Journal
About the Book
Theatre Communications Group (TCG) is pleased to announce the publication of the U.S. edition of Hamilton and Me An Actor's Journal by Giles Terera. When Lin-Manuel Miranda's groundbreaking musical Hamilton opened in London's West End in December 2017, it was as huge a hit as it had been in its original production Off- and on Broadway. Lauded by critics and audiences alike, the show would go on to win a record-equalling seven Olivier Awards—including Best Actor in a Musical for Giles Terera, for his portrayal of Aaron Burr.
For Terera, though, his journey as Burr had begun more than a year earlier, with his first audition in New York, and continuing through extensive research and preparation, intense rehearsals, previews, and finally opening night itself. Throughout this time he kept a journal, recording his experiences of the production and his process of creating his award-winning performance. This book, Hamilton and Me, is that journal.
My Take on the Book
This was an amazing book that really brings you, not only inside a remarkable musical. but also inside the craft of being an actor. This book really gives you an unfiltered look behind the scenes to a musical that has completely captured the nation. You will really be amazed to see how much dedication, passion, and hours and hours of work go into the creation of the musical. On top of this, you can also see how hard the actors have to work to keep up the show every night. This was a great book that lets you learn so much!

My Take on the Book
I am a huge fan of musicals and I try my best to get my kids to enjoy them too. While not every musical has turned out, and I have seen my share of flops too, this was not one of them. I was a bit skeptical at first, not knowing what to expect, and wondering whether the musical would be lacking in regards to story line, or whether it would simply be a retelling of the movie itself, it wasn't. Filled with amazing acting, great songs, and tons of humor, this was a great musical that kept my family and I laughing and loving every minute of it from beginning to end.
I was so glad that this was the original cast as I am a huge fan of Sutton Foster and Brian d'Arcy and knew that they had done an amazing job in this too, but alas I was not able to see it while they were in it (in it's NYC run). Beyond these two actors though I have to say that the whole cast just worked. They acted as a team, which you don't always see on stage.
This was a fun musical for the whole family! Whether you are a fan of the Shrek movies or not, you will love this musical. The music alone is worth the time, but add onto that great acting and plot and you get a fun family night!

My Take on the Movie
This was a great collection on one Blu-ray/DVD. I had seen the Phantom at the Fox Theater in Detroit when it first came out many years ago and have been a fan ever since. Now, I have a new generation in my own family which I would like to share this with. My daughters are both starting to enjoy the music, sights and sounds of broadway and I am so excited to share with them some of the amazing performances that are in store for them if they so choose to take them in. This Blu-Ray provided me a great way to share another great musical with them form the comfort of my own home. My girls simply loved the music and the performance. I was impressed to see how well done the Blu-ray was and the sights and sounds were not lost on the video itself so it was like I was sitting in the audience. All-in-all, if you are a fan of musical or simply the Phantom of the Opera, this is definitely a must have for your collection!

ROB MARSHALL SET TO DEVELOP “INTO THE WOODS” FEATURE FILM WITH DISNEY
Rob Marshall is set to direct a film adaptation of the acclaimed Broadway musical “Into the Woods,” featuring Stephen Sondheim’s original music, for The Walt Disney Studios, to be produced by Marshall and John DeLuca through their production company LUCAMAR Productions. James Lapine, who wrote the stage musical with Stephen Sondheim, will adapt for the screen.
The project is in development under a new multi-year producing deal between Disney and LUCAMAR.
“We are thrilled to be collaborating with Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine on this extraordinary and inspiring work,” said Rob Marshall and John DeLuca. “We are greatly looking forward to continuing our creative and rewarding relationship with Rich Ross, Sean Bailey and the ever supportive team at Disney.”
“Rob Marshall brought his signature flair to ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ with tremendous results and he is the perfect person to bring ‘Into the Woods’ to the screen,” Studio Chairman Rich Ross and President of Production Sean Bailey said in a statement. “We’ve loved working with Rob, and this is a great start to our collaboration with LUCAMAR.”
Rob Marshall most recently directed Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” which earned over $1 billion at the global box office and is the #8 highest grossing film of all time, the #3 film of 2011, and Disney’s biggest overseas release ever. It was the first “Pirates” film to be shot in 3D and the first major production at any studio to be shot in 3D on location. Marshall’s critically acclaimed stage musical adaptation “Chicago” (2002) grossed over $300 million worldwide and was nominated for 13 Academy Awards, winning six including best picture, with Marshall earning a nomination for best director. It also won the Golden Globe for best comedy/musical. His other feature films include “Memoirs of a Geisha” (2005), winner of three Academy Awards, and “Nine” (2009), which was nominated for four Academy Awards and five Golden Globes. Marshall is a four-time Emmy Award winner and a six-time Tony Award nominee, including choreographing and co-directing the 1998 Broadway revival of “Cabaret.”
“Into the Woods” weaves together the story of several of the most beloved fairytales (Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel) into the original story of a Baker and his wife who try to reverse a curse on their family in order to have a child, exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests and their desire for “happily ever after.” With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book and direction by James Lapine, “Into the Woods” earned 10 nominations at the 1988 Tony Awards, winning three including best score and best book of a musical. The 2002 Broadway revival won a Tony for best revival of a musical.
Sondheim and Lapine’s other collaborations include 1984’s Tony-winning “Sunday in the Park With George,” which won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and 1994’s “Passion,” winner of four Tonys including best musical. Sondheim has won eight Tony Awards, more than any other composer, as well as several Grammy Awards and an Academy Award, while Lapine has earned seven Tony nominations for direction and is a three-time winner (out of four nominations) for best book of a musical.
LUCAMAR most recently produced the film adaptation of the Broadway musical “Nine,” starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Nicole Kidman, Penélope Cruz, and Marion Cotillard, which was nominated for four Academy Awards and five Golden Globes. LUCAMAR also produced the star-studded, NBC television event “Tony Bennett: An American Classic,” which won seven Emmy Awards, the most of any nominated show that season. The company is headed by co-presidents Rob Marshall and John DeLuca, with Michael Zimmer serving as director of development.
Marshall and DeLuca are represented by Kevin Huvane and Brian Siberell at CAA and Michael Gendler of Gendler & Kelly.

FRECKLEFACE STRAWBERRY THE MUSICAL chronicles the life of seven-year-old Strawberry being teased by her schoolmates for having bright red hair and freckles. She feels different from everyone else and does anything to get rid of them- from scrubbing them with soap and even wearing a ski mask to school. Strawberry goes on a journey and discovers that all people are different. She ultimately learns to accept herself for all of who she is, freckles and all.
The heartwarming musical explores the book’s key message that “we’re all different, just like everyone else.” Not only Strawberry but the other characters in the show learn to live in their own skin.
The music in this show with song titles, such as, “I Can Be Anything” and “Hey, It’s Me” and lyrics like “can’t you see the real me and what I am inside, I no longer want to hide. Accept me for who I really am under this foolish disguise,” present its many important messages.
Critics and audiences alike have been raving about FRECKLEFACE STRAWBERRY THE MUSICAL. The New York Times calls it “FAST-MOVING AND FUNNY! IT WILL ENTERTAIN CHILDREN OF ALL AGES!”. The Huffington Post exclaims “IT’S A TREAT! A HIGH-ENERGY AND CHARMING SHOW! And the NY Daily News sums it up by saying “EVERY KID SHOULD SEE IT!”.

Audiobook Review - The History of the Musical
About the AudiobookA major production for Naxos AudioBooks and a unique Audiobook, this bold and entertaining undertaking traces the musical from its origins in classical music (Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera, Offenbach’s operettas and Gilbert and Sullivan) through to its flowering in America; Showboat, Anything Goes, High Society, Guys and Dolls, Oklahoma, West Side Story, The Sound of Music, Oliver, Cabaret, A Little Night Music, The Rocky Horror Show, The Phantom of the Opera – the list is endless. So are the stars who made the musicals live the composers, Kern, Porter, Gershwin, Bernstein, Lloyd Webber; the famous partnerships such as Rogers and Hammerstein, Lerner and Loewe; the performers Ethel Merman, Mary Martin, Howard Keel, Julie Andrews… and the tempestuous creative background to the productions themselves. With over 120 musical examples illustrating this remarkable story, the history of the musical in all its glory comes alive. Features over 100 musical examples.
My Take on the Audiobook
I have been a fan of musicals since I was a child. My parents would bring me to see them at my local high school or even to larger venues in Detroit or other cities. Thus, this audiobook, for me, was so interesting. In its complete unabridged version this book brings you through the complex history of the musical that is today. I learned so much about many musicals I had never heard of as well as writers that were well known in their day that I missed out on too. One of the things that I loved about this book was that there were so many interludes throughout the book that gave you a snippet into the musicals, using cast recordings so you could just close your eyes and wish that you were there. I also enjoyed listening to Kim Criswell reading the book. As a broadway insider she was a great choice for reading the book and she also did a great job. If you enjoy musicals, take yourself on a journey and let yourself get educated on the History of the Musical, you will not be disappointed.
