Book Review - Those Who Dare

About the BookThe surprise, speed, and violence of the forebears of U.S. Army Rangers, U.S. Navy SEALs, and SAS Commandos prove that “those who dare, win.”

By May 1940, panzer divisions had decimated Belgium, sliced through France, and reached Calais. Lieutenant John Randal, a veteran of the U.S. 26th Cavalry Regiment, volunteers to help slow their advance. What unfolds is a blend of military guerrilla tactics, suspense, humor, and brotherly camaraderie—plus a little romance between the American GI and the widowed Lady Jane Seaborn.

Along the way readers meet such colorful characters as the movie star Captain David Niven in MO-9 and Captain “Geronimo Joe” McKoy with his Traveling Wild West Show and Shooting Emporium. The author—a decorated Ranger—covers the details of war extensively, from the five points of contact of a parachute landing fall to descriptions of a British raider’s A-5 flinging Jerries like rag dolls before the first shell casing even hits the floor.

As the novel ends, Major Randal’s men, fresh from Operation Tomcat—the first British parachute raid in France—learn they’ll deploy via sea transport within forty-eight hours on their next mission. The second book, which has already been written tells the tale.

About the Author
Phil Ward is a decorated combat veteran commissioned at age nineteen. A former instructor at the Army Ranger School, he has had a lifelong interest in small unit tactics and special operations. He lives on a mountain overlooking Lake Austin with his beautiful wife, Lindy, whose father was the lieutenant governor to both Ann Richards and George W. Bush.

My Take on the Book
This book was a great work of historical fiction. You are drawn into the story and can truly see and experience the excitment of the story itself. When I lived in Wisconsin our neighbor was a WWII veteran and I always loved listening to his stories. This book brought some of his stories back into my mind. The author has done a great job at developing the storyline as well as the charcters and as a reader you want to see what happens next and whether the operation will suced or fail. If you enjoy books tht are full of action, drama and military opertaions/tactics, you should definitely check this book out!

If this books sounds like something that you would like to have in your own collection you can find it on Amazon!
