Book Review - Portion Size Me

About the Book
Project “Portion Size Me” was inspired by ten-year-old Marshall, who was tired of being picked on, unhappy with his appearance and feeling down on himself. Weary of trying to follow strict diets, Marshall, with the help of his mom Alexandra Reid, decided to pay close attention to how they ate for an entire month by looking at portions, reading labels and learning about ingredients. And in the process, this project became a lifestyle for their entire family.

Through an assortment of tips and personal anecdotes, Portion Size Me brings children and their families together to make conscious decisions about what they put into their bodies. Alex and Marshall developed a fun-filled project with six achievable goals to help create positive, long-lasting, healthy behaviors, including:

Read ingredients

About the Author
Alexandra Reid, former advertising executive at Young & Rubicam, is the mother of Marshall and his sister Jordan. The family, along with their dad, Dan, lives in North Carolina. Marshall Reid, now a sixth-grader, excels in his communication skills. His hobbies include cooking, Tae Kwon Do, playing football, canoeing, and most importantly, playing games on his Playstation.

My Take on the Book
This was a great book that makes you look at eating habits of children in a whole new way! I love the way the book incorporated goals which a parent could easily start with their own child. Especially with the content may be eating too much and this book gives great tips and resources as well as recipes that will help the child in changing their own life. The book was fun and easy to read encourages parents and children to talk to one another about eating in their concerns about food. I highly encourage any individual that is looking for a great book that will encourage their child to change their life to read this, you'll not be disappointed.

My Take on the Book
This was a heart-wrenching tale that will keep you engage from the first page to the last. What was most intriguing for me were the characters that the author shares with her readers. She does an amazing job at developing the characters into one's you truly care for, and this encourages you and pushes you to read further to find out what happens next. Not only isn't this a story filled with emotion and drama, but also with intrigue, as the main character Travis must make some very important and difficult choices for his and his daughter's future. This is a great story that I would recommend to all!

Book Review - Love Does

About the Book

My Take on the Book
I have been following Bob Goff for some years ever since I read about him from Donald Miller. I watching his amazing life from a distance and being amazed at the way that he has lived his life and shared his passion for life with his own children. I can say that his is an inspiration to any father! This book will make you think outside the box about the way in which you want to live your own life. Do you want to live your life in an ordinary or extra-ordinary way? Do you want to live your life completely engaged, if so, Bob can give you some great inspiration! I loved the part of the story that showed Bob encouraging his kids to write world leaders. I am constantly encouraging our kids to try things they are passionate about and Bob did this and to me was an inspiration. The book was funny and entertaining but more than that it will help you to re-envision the life that you want to have!

Book Review - Coming Apart: The State of White America, 1960-2010

About the Book
In Coming Apart, Charles Murray explores the formation of American classes that are different in kind from anything we have ever known, focusing on whites as a way of driving home the fact that the trends he describes do not break along lines of race or ethnicity.

Drawing on five decades of statistics and research, Coming Apart demonstrates that a new upper class and a new lower class have diverged so far in core behaviors and values that they barely recognize their underlying American kinship—divergence that has nothing to do with income inequality and that has grown during good economic times and bad.

The top and bottom of white America increasingly live in different cultures, Murray argues, with the powerful upper class living in enclaves surrounded by their own kind, ignorant about life in mainstream America, and the lower class suffering from erosions of family and community life that strike at the heart of the pursuit of happiness. That divergence puts the success of the American project at risk.

The evidence in Coming Apart is about white America. Its message is about all of America.

My Take on the Book
This book was one that opened my eyes to the different classes in America and what made these classes come to be. Being that I was somewhat isolated to the class system growing up I can say that I did not know much of what was in this book. Once I got into the book I found it hard to put the book down. While I say this, I was not 100% sold on all of the assertions that the author makes, but I will say that the author does an amazing job at making his points clear to his readers. His points were clear and informative and as a reader I found myself wanting to read more!

For anyone with any type of interest in sociology or in the idea of class, this is definitely a book that I would highly recommend to all. You may not agree with every point, but you will leave the reading of this book with many new ideas in your mind!

Snip.it Announces “Bike Sharing” As Its Earth Day Contest Winner

Snip.it, a new social curation service, today announced Eric Ouellette, creator of the Bike Sharing collection as the winner of its Earth Day contest (http://snip.it/earthday) — an initiative designed to raise global awareness for environmental issues and green sustainability.

For the past two weeks, users have been submitting collections of articles, videos and images to illuminate an environmental issue they feel passionate about. A judges panel, headed up by green venture capitalist Vinod Khosla, evaluated the 62 submissions this weekend based on depth, thoughtfulness and success in spreading awareness through Facebook likes. They named Bike Sharing the winner.

The contest demonstrates how people can use Snip.it’s social curation platform to raise awareness and deepen understanding for any issue they care about, including the environment. Topics from contest submissions spanned everything from upcycling to ocean conservation to solar energy.

“We were so impressed with the quality, thought and creativity that went into all of the Earth Day collections,” said Ramy Adeeb, Snip.it’s CEO and founder. “All the entries were in line with Snip.it’s mission to give users a platform to discuss and share the topics they care about.”

As the winner of Snip.it’s Earth Day contest, Eric Ouellette will receive a new iPad. A $200 donation will also be made to the Coalition for Smarter Growth, the environmental nonprofit he chose to award as part of his winning. Steve Rahman came in second for his The Great Pacific Garbage Patch collection. He will receive a cash prize of $250 along with a $100 donation to the environmental nonprofit of his choice. In third place, Corrie Clearwater will be awarded $150 for her Teach Your Children Well collection, and a $50 donation will be made to the environmental non-profit of her choice.

Each submission was judged by a panel of environmental thought-leaders led by Vinod Khosla, preeminent clean tech investor; Zem Joaquin, ecoFabulous founder and board member of Global Green; Chip Giller, founder and president of Grist.org, Randy Paynter, founder and CEO of Care2.com; Avital Binshtock Andrews, renowned journalist covering sustainability for Sierra; and Diana Dehm, host of sustainability news and entertainment for Planet TM, formerly Radio Green Talk and founder and president of Sustainable Business Partnerships, LLC.
