Book Review - How To Win College Scholarships

About the Book
The How To Win Scholarships guide will tell you exactly what you need to do to get started NOW on winning as much FREE money for college as possible. The author's son was exactly where many students are in their senior year of high school. He was busy with social, academic, and sports obligations, but knew he needed to win scholarships to pay for his college education. He needed scholarship help!

This guide will help you by teaching you a method of putting together your scholarship application packets in a way that looks, feels, and IS different from those submitted by your peers. Your college scholarship applications will stand out and get noticed by the judges and THAT is the way to win scholarships.

The author developed a method of applying for college scholarships that is nothing like the normal method of filling out applications and mailing them in. This method teaches parents and students how to create a scholarship application packet that immediately stands out from those of their peers.

Both guides are organized into 10 clear and easy to follow sections, with step by step instructions on perfecting scholarship applications, along with tips on what college scholarship selection committees look for and how to win scholarships. Learn amazing ways to:

  • Get organized
  • Find scholarships
  • Get great letters of recommendation
  • Write a memorable (and winning!) essay
  • Put together an application package that looks, feels, and IS different from all the rest
  • Get the most financial aid possible

And much more scholarship help!

My Take on the Book
I have read many books preparing for college as well as finding scholarships and was looking for bigger and better resources to share with students that I am working with. This ebook was practical, down-to-earth, and so easy to understand. The author has put so much personal learning and experience of the book it makes it that much better for the parent of the college student as well as the student themselves. The book also is set up with the reader in mind and gives great advice about what a person can do to truly set them apart from others and make  it  that much more probable that they can identify scholarships from cells that will help them cover the cost of their college education. While there are many books on finding scholarships this one in my mind stands out just for sheer honesty and upfront frankness about what steps you need to take to take yourself to the next level and candidacy for scholarships.

Book Review - If I Knew Then, What I Know Now! College and Financial Aid Planning From A Parent's Perspective

About the Book
College and the financial aid planning process should start as early in a child’s life as possible. It can be a frustrating and complicated puzzle, and parents often have no idea where to begin or how to help their children get through it.

If I Knew Then What I Know Now! College & Financial Aid Planning From A Parent’s Perspective (Pendium Publishing) by Cynthia Hammond Davis, is the true story of her struggle to find help putting all of the pieces of the college search, financial aid, scholarships, athletics and extracurricular activities together.

After experiencing first-hand how complex this journey can be, Davis decided to combine her findings and include them in a book to help other parents and students with early college awareness. This book acts as a priceless guide to help parents understand their role as well as offering basic tips on how they can assist their children through the process as efficiently as possible.

Want to know where a lot of scholarship money can be found? Want to find out how your child may be able to attend an out-of-state college while paying in-state tuition costs? Want advice that will save time during the college admission process? Answers to these questions and more can be found in this book – outlined in a short, simple, and to the point approach.

Davis believes that there is nothing to prepare parents on how and where to begin and they struggle through trying to help their children, just as she did, and it was through trial and error she learned how to get to the right information. In her instructive book, she is very candid about mistakes she made along the way in hopes of helping other parents avoid making those same mistakes.

Cynthia Hammond Davis is a College and Career Advisor, Founder/Executive Director of The Light of the City, Inc., a nonprofit organization, and President of CollegeAndCareerAdvice.Com. She is the radio talk show host of her own Saturday morning talk show, “The College and Career Information Hour,” and an in-demand public and motivational speaker.

As a college and financial aid advisor since 2001, she has helped many parents and students get through the process, resulting in their receiving scholarship offers that total over $1 million collectively each year. What Cynthia Hammond Davis does, she does with the passion of someone who truly cares about her work and about helping students to become tomorrow’s professionals.

College is one of the most expensive things parents can plan for their children and now they don’t have to waste countless hours doing their own research – Davis has done it for them. All they need to do is read the book!

My Take on the Book
As a college admissions professional, I have read many books and written one myself, so I am always looking for other books that will make the college selection and planning process easier for parents and children alike. This was a great book that brought together the great experience of the author with practical tips that can help many parents to de-mystify the college preparation process. There are some wonderful hidden gems within the book, and what is best is that the book itself is short and to the point so you are not having to sift through 300-400 pages trying to find exactly what you need, but instead the book is laid out in an easy to follow and understand way that makes perfect sense! All-in-all this was a great book for anyone looking to start the college planning process.

Tips on Giving Back & Scholarship Opportunity

With Martin Luther King Day around the corner and a new year upon us, it’s the perfect time to share ideas for teaching kids the important lessons of giving back. And who better to offer advice than the parents of young leaders who are committed to giving back? The following tips are from the moms of Build-A-Bear Workshop Huggable Heroes, who are young people providing extraordinary service to their communities and/or around the world:

  • Walk the walk. Get involved yourself; participate in charitable events on behalf of causes you believe in.
  • Include children in volunteer efforts. Provide opportunities for children to see and act on the needs of others so they learn first-hand how they can make a positive difference.
  • Start small. Do little projects to help others and begin at an early age.
  • Consider a charity allowance. Set aside a percentage of each child’s monthly allowance for charity and let them decide where to donate the money at the end of six months.
  • Support them. Allow their ideas to flourish and help their dreams become reality whether that means lending moral support, providing necessary transportation and equipment, or giving them a pat on the back to keep them going.
  • Remember: Encouraging your children to participate in charitable endeavors is a gift to them, as well as to the people whose lives they touch

The Build-A-Bear Workshop Huggable Heroes program was created to encourage and empower kids to be leaders and award them for their dedication and accomplishments. From January 12 through February 27, 2012, your readers can nominate their kids, family members, siblings or anyone ages eight to 18 who have made an impact in their communities and beyond by picking up a nomination form at participating Build-A-Bear Workshop stores or by entering online. The 10 selected Huggable Heroes will receive an educational scholarship ($7,500), a donation ($2,500) to the 501 (c)(3) charity of their choice plus a trip to St. Louis to engage in a community service project together and celebrate their accomplishments. “The start of a new year is a great time to think about your future goals and resolve to achieve them, and ScholarGamers.com is here to help,” said Angelo Tartaro, founder and CEO, ScholarGamers.com. “In 2011, we’re expanding our audience of tournament participants, increasing the frequency and number of scholarships offered and enhancing the selection of games offered—all with the intent of making the difficult process of financing an education just a bit easier and a lot more fun.”

ScholarGamers launched in November 2010 with a mission of helping students tackle escalating educational costs by providing scholarships to winners of various online games.  ScholarGamers.com recently entered into partnerships with Kitara Media’s Verge Games and independent studio Hard Circle.

ScholarGamers.com offers scholarships of up to $5,000, deposited into a 529 plan for each designated winner.  Competitors are only eligible to win once. ScholarGamers.com will award a total of 128 scholarships in 2011.

Introducing ScholarGamers.com: Paying for College Has Never Been So Much Fun

Offering a new solution to the problem of escalating educational costs, ScholarGamers.com launches today.  The innovative platform channels teenagers’ enthusiasm for casual online games by inviting them to compete to win scholarship money in an arena that is free and fun, secure and social.

The first in a planned series of sponsor-supported platforms by Internet Sport Games Associates (ISGA), ScholarGamers.com is the brainchild of marketing executive Angelo Tartaro.  Recognizing the increasing popularity of casual online games among middle- and high-school students, a demographic which will also bear the burden of skyrocketing educational costs, Tartaro assembled a team of marketing, technology and video game professionals to develop the ScholarGamers.com solution.

“With the average annual cost of a college education exceeding $30,000, and the average debt load of a college graduate exceeding $20,000, a college degree is a significant financial burden,” said Tartaro.  “We’re aiming to make that goal more attainable for kids who aren’t necessarily the star athletes or valedictorians, by leveraging one of their favorite pastimes for educational purposes.”

Although registered members may play any of the site’s flash games for free any time they wish, competition for scholarships is grouped into a series of 75 day rounds.  Players will compete against the entire ScholarGamers.com community to generate the highest cumulative scores for 45 days.  A time limit of 20-minutes is imposed on each competition. Within 30 days, the 15 players with the highest scores are flown to Disney’s BoardWalk Resort to compete head-to-head for the scholarships.  The first round of competition kicks off November 1, with participants playing for a $10,000 first prize.  Each of the 15 finalists will receive scholarship money, in the form of 529 plan contributions that can be used towards educational expenses. Scholarships will only be awarded to middle-and high-school students, aged 13 and above.  Competition rounds will repeat every 45 days, for a total of 120 planned scholarship opportunities in the next year.

“As the site grows in reach and popularity, we plan to increase the number and amount of scholarships awarded. For students trying to pay for an education, everything that can help defray costs—from tuition to text books—is valuable” added Joe Roth, president and COO, IGSA. “ScholarGamers.com provides advertisers with a unique opportunity to engage with a coveted demographic of teens and their parents in a wholesome and educational context.”

Funded by carefully-vetted advertising and sponsorship of competitions, ScholarGamers.com is at the nexus of several of fastest growing areas online—including casual games and social gaming.  Comscore reports that online games are growing at ten times the rate of the total U.S. Internet population and reach nearly one out of every two Internet users, while NPD Group reports that the percentage of online gamers ages 13-17 increased from 17 percent in 2008 to 22 percent in 2009.  Marketer forecasts that advertising in online games will increase 133% from 2007 to 2012.

“Studies show when played in moderation, online games can offer many benefits–building self-esteem, fostering camaraderie, and developing motor and problem-solving skills,” said Tartaro.  “By adding purpose to the games, ScholarGamers.com enhances the positive experience.”
