Movie Review - Blue Beetle

Blue Beetle

Bonus Content:

Blue Beetle Generations: Origins Blue Beetle Generations: Production Begins Blue Beetle Generations: In Full Flight Blue Beetle Generations: A Hero's World Scarab Vision: Episode 1: Initiation Scarab Vision: Episode 2: Mastery Blue Beetle's Nana Knows Best

My Take on the Movie
As a fan of DC Comics, Blue Beetle was always a character that I loved and I was excited to see it come to the big screen. One of the things that I loved about the film is that you get a true origin story that does follow the DC Comic storyline (for the most part). As in any comic film, this film has a little bit of everything for all viewers. You get drama, comedy, suspense and tons of action while surrounding all of it with a great cast that you can really connect with. As you watch the film, if you are a true lover of the comic, you will definitely find some hidden Easter Eggs that you will love (so be on the lookout). The movie was a ton of fun and definitely a movie I would encourage any superhero film fan to watch! It just flies by and in the end you will be cheering on Jamie and wanting to see Blue Beetle again in the future!

Book Review - Green Lantern: Legacy

Green Lantern: Legacy

About the Book

The owner of the Jade Market has a secret--one that will soon change her grandson's life.

Thirteen-year-old Tai Pham lives in the apartment above his grandmother's store, where his bedroom is crammed with sketchpads and comic books. But not even his most imaginative drawings could compare to the colorful adventure he's about to embark on.

When Tai inherits his grandmother's jade ring, he soon finds out it's more than it appears. Suddenly he's being inducted into a group of space cops known as the Green Lanterns, his neighborhood is being overrun by some racist bullies, and every time he puts pen to paper, he's forced to confront that he might not be creative enough or strong enough to uphold his ba's legacy.

Now Tai must decide what kind of hero he wants to be: will he learn to soar above his insecurities or will the past keep him grounded?

My Take on the Book
If you are a fan of the Green Lantern Corp. get ready for a fun new hero in the making. I loved that in this book the ring chooses a 13 year old which is around the same age as my daughter. The fact that the ring uses your creativity, I could easily see how Tai will be able to be a very powerful Green Lantern in the future. I also loved how in one book you not only see Tai learning about being a part of the Lantern Corp., but you also see him meeting and fighting a nemesis. I hope that there will be more books with Tai in the future!

Book Review - Batman: Damned

Batman: Damned

About the Book

The Joker has been murdered. His killer is a mystery. Batman is the World's Greatest Detective. But what happens when the person he is searching for is the man staring back at him in the mirror?

THE JOKER IS DEAD.

There is no doubt about that. But whether Batman finally snapped his scrawny neck or some other sinister force in Gotham City did the deed is still a mystery.

Problem is, Batman can't remember...and the more he digs into this labyrinthine case, the more he starts to doubt everything he's uncovering.

So who better to set him straight than...John Constantine?

The problem with that is as much as John loves a good mystery, he loves messing with people's heads even more. So with John's "help," the pair will delve into the sordid underbelly of Gotham as they race toward the mind-blowing truth of who murdered the Joker.

Batman: Damned is a groundbreaking supernatural horror story told by two of comics' greatest modern creators: Brian Azzarello (Dark Knight III: The Master Race, 100 Bullets) and Lee Bermejo (Hellblazer, Joker).

This hardcover volume collects Batman: Damned #1-3 and features a behind-the-scenes extras gallery with an afterword by Brian Azzarello.

My Take on the Book
This is a story that was raw, full of grit and power. This book has a ton of substance throughout the entire book. The book itself is amazing full of a great story, great illustrations and more. This is definitely a dark book, but it is also an indication of where the story of Batman is going. The book itself really looks at Bruce Wayne and Batman. You need to take time with this book and really explore all of the intricacies of the man who is the bat. It is a dark book that for some may be too dark, but I will say that it is an amazing book that makes you think about Batman in a new way! This book opens the door to the future that is coming for Batman, so strap up and get ready for a powerful read!

Movie Review - DC Superhero Girls: Legends of Atlantis

DC Superhero Girls: Legends of Atlantis

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the DVD I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions are my own.

About the Movie

The students of Super Hero High dive deep into their latest adventure as Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and DC Entertainment bring you DC Super Hero Girls: Legends of Atlantis, the newest feature in the popular, groundbreaking universe celebrating young girls. The journey with the toughest class of female DC Super Heroes will be available on Digital ($14.99 SRP) and DVD ($19.98 SRP) on October 2, 2018. Special bonus content on the release includes the 44 minute previously-aired television special, “Super Hero High.”

It seems like an uneventful day at school until the powerful Book of Legends is suddenly stolen from Super Hero High. In order to uncover the mystery, Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Supergirl, Bumblebee and the rest of the Super Crew must journey through the depths of the ocean to Atlantis. There, the girls encounter Mera and Siren, the ocean-dwelling thieves, who prove to be a formidable match. In order to recover the stolen tome and return it to its rightful place, DC Super Hero Girls must band together and use their collective powers to successfully get back to land…and back to class!

From Warner Bros. Consumer Products and DC Entertainment, the DC Super Hero Girls universe encourages young girls, ages 6-12, to explore their own powers and strengths through original content, including all-new films, webisodes and TV specials. The franchise offers young fans inspiration and encourages teamwork, friendship and empowerment. DC Super Hero Girls: Legends of Atlantis will connect with fans throughout the world via waves of digital content, including DCSuperHeroGirls.com, the DCSHG App, YouTube Channel and Instagram, as well as a global licensing and merchandising program.

DC Super Hero Girls: Legends of Atlantis features some of the top voice actors in the industry including Grey Griffin (Wonder Woman), Tara Strong (Harley Quinn/Poison Ivy), Anais Fairweather (Supergirl), Mae Whitman (Batgirl), Teala Dunn (Bumblebee) and Stephanie Sheh (Katana) as they join forces to portray the youthful versions of some of the world’s best known Super Heroes.

Cecilia Aranovich Hamilton and Ian Hamilton direct from a script by Shea Fontana. Jennifer Coyle serves as producer with Sam Register as Executive Producer.

“TheDC Super Hero Girls return to fight new villains of the deep in the all-new movie DC Super Hero Girls: Legends of Atlantis,” said Mary Ellen Thomas, WBHE Vice President, Family & Animation Marketing. “This exciting new adventure continues to spread the important message of female empowerment to young people – everywhere!”

My Take on the Book
This was a great movie that brings together a great group of super heroes. One of the things that I loved too was that the super heroes were all strong female characters. In this movie you get to see the students of Super Hero High under the sea in a fun new adventure. We loved meeting Mera and Siren and while Siren serves as the main villain, we loved to be able to see these characters working together and against each other too. My daughter loved seeing Wonder Woman, Mera, Bumblebee, Supergirl, and Batgirl all together again. She also kept telling me how great these characters work together as a team and I have to agree.

On top of having the great girl characters you also get to see great fun moments with Beast Boy, Katana, Flash, Starfire, and some others.

For me, this was a great movie, with good character development, adventure, suspense and more all in one movie. If you love the other DC Superhero Girl movies and television shows, you’ll love this.

Book Review - I'm Not Your Sweet Babboo!

I'm Not Your Sweet Babboo!

About the Book

Pick up a glass of milk, curl up with your security blanket, and enjoy the timeless brilliance of Peanuts in this new collection of comic strips!

Everyone’s favorite classic characters are back: Peppermint Patty enrolls in a private school to end her academic troubles—only to discover she’s just graduated from obedience school. Linus finds himself entangled in a love triangle (and stuck on top of a snow-covered roof). And Charlie Brown runs away from the law and becomes a vagrant baseball coach.

The Peanuts crew is lovable, popular, and charming, but please whatever you do, don’t call Linus “My Sweet Babboo!”

My Take on the Book
This book is delightful to read. You will laugh and admire Charles Schulz for his use of the Peanut characters in everyday feelings and events. He includes events at school, the home, in sports, and then of course there is always fun with Snoopy and Woodstock.

The book is set up like the comic strip and very colorful. The comic strips are short: half a page, whole page, and some take up two pages. The book is easy to read and a lot of fun.

One of my favorite strips in this book was the interaction Snoopy has with the neighbor's cat. It appears that the cat is the winner in most encounters, but Snoopy never gives up.

At the end of the book is some factual information about helicopters. A page is included to make your own helicopter to play with outdoors.

Being someone that has not read much from The Phoenix before, but I can tell you that this book was a ton of fun to read through and all of the collection that was shared offered humor, adventure and more. Book Review - Kid Beowulf: The Song of Roland

Kid Beowulf: The Song of Roland

 photo disclaimer_zpsd3x74ej2.jpg

About the Book
Giants! Elephants! Roller Coasters?

That's just some of the mayhem twin brothers Beowulf and Grendel discover in the second adventure! Banished from their homeland, the brothers seek refuge with their Uncle Holger in far-off France, but by the time they arrive, the kingdom is in shambles: King Charlemagne is ailing; his knights have been exiled; and France's hero, Roland, needs a kick in the pants. It's up to Beowulf and Grendel to unite the country before it's taken over by an invading Saracen horde!

Kid Beowulf: The Song of Roland

My Take on the Book
This is such a fun book! The author has taken an amazing poem, "Chanson de Roland" (Song of Roland) and turned it into something that really stands out with amazing characters and a engaging story too. On top of this you get amazing images throughout that really bring the story to life too.

Book Review - Big Nate: What's a Little Noogie Between Friends?

Big Nate: What's a Little Noogie Between Friends?

 photo disclaimer_zpsd3x74ej2.jpg

About the Book
Big Nate is in a class by himself. This feisty 11-year-old holds the school record for detentions, but that doesn't stop him from dreaming big!

Nate Wright’s a winner--in his own mind, anyway. So when things go wrong, he’s at a loss to explain why. How does his soccer team manage to lose to a school with a sixty-game winless streak? What’s he doing at the movies on a Friday night . . . with GINA? And why, oh why is one of his classmates (hint: she’s Nate’s dream girl) suddenly moving 3,000 miles away? It’s all enough to make a sixth-grade superstar feel . . . well, not so super.

Big Nate: What's a Little Noogie Between Friends?

But you can’t keep a good man down, and Nate’s still got pals like Teddy, Francis, and Chad to cheer him up. Sure, their methods aren’t always warm and fuzzy, but Nate doesn’t mind. After all, what’s a little noogie between friends?

My Take on the Book
Another amazing Big Nate book that continues to offer you the same humor your have found in previous books but also stands apart as well. The story in this book is solid and stands alone from its' predecessors.  You and your kids will find yourselves laughing throughout and we found that the chapters are short and compelling too. There were a few times when I had to limit the reading of the book for the night because my own daughters just wanted to get done with the book itself. All of this said, the book was a ton to read with my girls and you and/or you and your kids will love the wit, humor and heart that you will find in this great Big Nate book!

Book Review - The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl: Squirrel Meets World

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl: Squirrel Meets World

 photo disclaimer_zpsd3x74ej2.jpg

About the Book
A 320-page Middle Grade Novel telling an original "tail" of Marvel's cute, quirky, and downright furry Super Heroine--Squirrel Girl!

My Take on the Book
I have been a big comics person for many year. I remember growing up in the 1980's and reading voraciously about teens my age that were receiving their powers. I related to their vulnerability as uniqueness and this is what always drew me in. I had heard of Squirrel Girl in the past but had never read any of the comics that were put out in the past, but this book sounded interesting. I started reading this and found that I did not want to put it down. It was a great background story of Squirrel Girl finding herself and her powers. Even more though is that this is a coming of age story that is down to earth and real. Squirrel Girl gives you an amazing young woman that I can see myself wanting to get to know and while she has tons of wit and spunk, she also has more heart than most superheroes. You also get a very diabolical villain as well - will Squirrel Girl be victorious? Highly recommend this book!!

Book Review - DC Super Heroes Origami

DC Super Heroes Origami
 photo disclaimer_zpsd3x74ej2.jpg

About the Book
What happens when you combine Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and the Justice League with the art of origami? You get the most incredible collection of paper-folding projects ever assembled. These 46 models, meticulously designed by internationally renowned origami master John Montroll, are guaranteed to amaze. With clear, step-by-step diagrams and instructions, simple squares of paper transform into Batarangs, S-Shields, Invisible Jets, Green Lanterns, and so much more. Also included in the back of the book are 96 sheets of specially illustrated folding papers to make your DC creations truly come to life. When you fold these models, your friends will believe youre the one with super powers.

My Take on the Book
John Montroll has written a book that combines the popular superheroes with an art project using origami. Each superhero is colorfully illustrated with a paragraph describing their powers or talents. Next to the superhero is an origami project that pertains to the superhero. For example, after reading about Wonder Woman, your child will use the provided origami paper to construct her symbol.

The directions for the projects are well written and illustrated. The author provides both visuals and written directions along with arrows to show what direction to fold the paper.
Another nice feature of each project is the difficulty labeling the author provided.

I believe this book will provide hours of fun and some challenges too.

Book Review - Sisters

Sisters
 photo disclaimer2_zps8af35ac1.jpg

About the Book
The companion to Raina Telgemeier's #1 NEW YORK TIMES bestselling and Eisner Award-winning graphic memoir, SMILE.

Raina can't wait to be a big sister. But once Amara is born, things aren't quite how she expected them to be. Amara is cute, but she's also a cranky, grouchy baby, and mostly prefers to play by herself. Their relationship doesn't improve much over the years, but when a baby brother enters the picture and later, something doesn't seem right between their parents, they realize they must figure out how to get along. They are sisters, after all.

Raina uses her signature humor and charm in both present-day narrative and perfectly placed flashbacks to tell the story of her relationship with her sister, which unfolds during the course of a road trip from their home in San Francisco to a family reunion in Colorado.

My Take on the Book
Raina Telgemeier has written a very funny true story about her life.It is a story beginning when she was a little girl who was wishing she had a sister. The story is set up like a comic book with illustrations and dialogue. It covers from the time Raina was six years old through her entrance into high school. There are the typical family situations, sister arguments , pets living and dying, and then the family road trip from California to Colorado.

The story centers on the road trip. Raina shines in this book as an author due to not only the story content but her humor in the family situations and her interactions with her sister. You will see real life feelings and compromise.

If you have a sister, you will want to read this book and then share it with your sister.

My Take on the Book
This is an exciting chapter book with Captain America and his friends. The villain is Hydra and his Tomorrow Army. They want to take over New York City and the Statue of Liberty.

The chapters are short and with the descriptive text and dialog it will keep your child engaged in the reading of the story. The action is fast in this story and will keep your child captivated and wondering what will occur next.
If you have a child who enjoys reading super hero stories, I believe this book will be one they will enjoy adding to their reading collection.

About the DVD
From the mind of comic legend Stan Lee, the celebrated creator of Spider-Man, X-Men, Iron Man, Thor and many others, comes an all-new adventure Stan Lee’s Mighty 7: Beginnings, arriving on Blu-ray/ DVD combo and DVD from Cinedigm.

Stan Lee’s Mighty 7: Beginnings is produced by Stan Lee Comics, a joint venture among Genius Brands International, Stan Lee’s POW! Entertainment and Archie Comics, and is the first in a trilogy of feature-length films premiering on The Hub Network and supported by a licensing program to include digital comic books, toys, apparel, and video games. Available exclusively at Walmart and Sam’s Club locations nationwide, the hilarious, post-modern adventure features the voice talents of Armie Hammer (The Lone Ranger), Christian Slater (“Mind Games”), Mayim Bialik (“Big Bang Theory”), Teri Hatcher (“Desperate Housewives”), Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Darren Criss (“Glee”), Sean Astin (The Lord of the Rings), Jim Belushi (Snow Buddies), Michael Ironside (X-Men: First Class), and – of course! – Stan Lee. Interestingly, Stan Lee’s Mighty 7: Beginnings marks the first time Stan Lee has written himself into one of his projects.

When seven aliens crash land on Earth in hot pursuit by evil forces, they meet the famous comic writer Stan Lee who is in the midst of a writer’s block. The perfect subjects for his new book, Stan agrees to hide them in his Malibu beach house and teach them all they need to know about becoming super heroes. The Stan Lee’s Mighty 7: Beginnings Blu-ray/DVD Combo and DVD include $6.25 e-Movie Cash, and the Combo is packed with exclusive, must-see content such as extended scenes, Script-to-Screen featurette, Composer’s Favorite Music Cue’s, a Stan Lee Trivia Game, Production Sketches and more. The DVD includes downloadable wallpapers and coloring sheets. Stan Lee’s Mighty 7: Beginnings made its broadcast premiere on The Hub in February 2014.

My Take on the DVD
This was a great DVD series. As a fan of superheroes, I was excited to watch this as I am always a fan of meeting new heroes and I had never read any of these when they were in comic book form. This was an action packed series that kept me completely engaged from beginning to end and my daughters loved watching it too. I was very impressed and now I am looking forward to reading and seeing more from this in the future!
