Raid Launches New Pest Control System

 photo disclaimer2_zps8af35ac1.jpg

As the weather heats up, bugs begin making their way into weather-worn cracks and crevices created from the severe winter weather. Too often, consumers approach pest control as a reactive measure, when there are proactive options to help keep problems from arising. To help consumers solve their bug problems, Raid® is introducing the Raid® Defense System – a regimen of attack, control and prevent products and tips, as well as a suite of online tools. The website--raidkillsbugs.com—features a bug identifier, a product selector and comparison, and expert tips aimed to help general consumers and home owners.

Raid Launches New Pest Control System

My Take on the ProductsI was able to try out the products and was impressed at how fast these products work. With it being summer we always have problems with ants both in and out of the house. The products that I received had a wide mix of products that would help for both of these venues and they were so easy to use. I loved the battery powered ant/insect sprayer as it made it simple to apply around the house to make a barrier around all of our doors. The other problem that we have been having is inside of our house around the food dish for our cats, ants have been invading and we don't know from where. The ant traps were an inconspicuous way to solve our problem and allow us to provide a long lasting ant repellant solution. All-in-all we were VERY impressed with the results and we would be happy to try more products again in the future!

My Take on the Products
These products work so well! I have used some of the insect repellent in the past and was impressed then and in trying this new product line they have done a great job at continuing the line of excellence that started in the past. I also loved the sunscreen line that they had as I had not had the opportunity to try this in the past. The color changing sunscreen was so cool as it allowed me as a parent to know where I had applied sunscreen on the kids and where I had not! Best of all was the fact that Avon has been able to incorporate sunscreen and bug repellent which is many times necessary! I have to highly recommend this product line to all parents, but even more to all, as it seems to be a line that simply offers you the best of all things!

Product Review - Black Flag Flying Insect Trap

Flying insect pests like wasps, yellow jackets and flies can pose significant threats to homeowners and their families. This year the dangers may be even greater, as above-average winter temperatures have forced many flying insects out of hibernation earlier than usual. The Black Flag® brand is giving homeowners the chance to take control of their backyards with the launch of its new Black Flag Flying Insect Trap and Lures.

“Whether it’s highly aggressive stinging insects like wasps and yellow jackets or more passive disease-carrying insects like houseflies, this season’s above-average temperatures may lead to a significant increase in flying insect pests come summer,” says John Pailthorp, Division Vice President, Marketing. “The best thing homeowners can do is eliminate these pests before they create an even bigger problem.”

By setting up the Black Flag Flying Insect Trap and Lures during the spring season, homeowners may be able to reduce the number of wasp, yellow jacket and fly colonies come late summer. The trap is reusable and versatile, since it can be placed above the ground (hung from a tree, pole or fence) or attached to the provided stake and pushed into the ground.

The product not only eliminates flying insect pests, it also doesn’t attract unwanted attention, as it is designed to blend into backyard settings. Attractive and discreet, the Black Flag Flying Insect Trap and Lures are also economical, safe, durable and perhaps most importantly, effective, allowing homeowners to enjoy, entertain and relax on their deck or patio with less worry regarding flying insect pests.

For added control, be sure to follow these tips from the Black Flag brand for keeping your backyard pest free.

  • Keep gutters clear and direct water from downspouts away from your home.
  • Cut back bushes and tree branches around your house.
  • Clean up all pet and animal feces promptly.
  • Dispose of kitchen scraps and other organic waste properly.
  • If you have fruit trees in your yard, pick up any fruit that falls on the ground.
  • Place lids on trash and recycling bins and move them away from the house.
My Take on the Product
I had not tried and Black Flag traps like these before so I didn't know what to expect. I have to say that I was quite impressed with their look as well as the result in using the product. The trip itself makes pretty large claims to its success, so going into this review I was a little bit skeptical. We've been seeing a large number of wasps already this season. Maybe are saying that because of the early warmth that we had in Michigan and that the wasps started earlier as well, and if what I am seeing is any indication, they are correct. With this in mind we have not wanted to go out on our deck to enjoy the nice weather due to the wasps that I always prevalent. I decided to use this trap near our deck to see if it would help control the wasp population and allow us to sit outside and enjoy the nice weather and the outdoors. In putting this up, as mentioned, I was impressed with the aesthetic look of the product itself. I also was impressed with how quickly it seemed to work, as within only a few days I noticed a marked decrease in the number of wasps that were bothering me when I went outside. Overall, I was quite impressed and I still hit the trap hanging today!

Insect Shield: Providing You A Way to Enjoy the Outdoors

About the Company
In July 2003, Insect Shield, introduced the first EPA-registered insect-repellent apparel. Insect Shield® Repellent Apparel technology provides effective, invisible and odorless protection against mosquitoes, ticks, ants, flies, chiggers, and midges (no-see-ums) through 70 launderings. Insect Shield apparel categories include outdoor, golf, hunting, fishing, and equestrian. Insect Shield® Repellent Gear technology is proven to repel mosquitoes, ticks, flies, and fleas through six months of constant exposure to weathering (sun/rain). Insect Shield gear product categories include camping, patio, beach, pet, and equestrian. Insect Shield technology has the potential to be an important tool in the battle against insect-borne diseases. In partnership with a number of agencies and international relief organizations, Insect Shield technology is being used for apparel and other items that people use daily to aid in protection against insects. For more information about Insect Shield, visit Insect Shield's Technology section. Insect Shield Repellent Apparel is also offered under the brand names of ShudderBug™ and Bug Shield™.

What is Insect Shield?
Insect Shield® Repellent Apparel and Insect Shield® Repellent Gear are revolutionary products designed to provide long-lasting, effective and convenient personal insect protection. The durable protection provided by Insect Shield apparel and gear is the result of years of research and testing. In July 2003, Insect Shield Repellent Apparel was registered by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. In 2006, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) accepted an amendment extending the durability claims from 25 washes to 70 washes. The duration of the repellency is supported by experimental data. Insect Shield apparel and gear products combine the patent-pending Insect Shield process with a proprietary formulation of the insect repellent permethrin—resulting in effective, odorless insect protection that lasts the expected lifetime of a garment.

How did permethrin originate, and what are its uses?
Permethrin is a man-made version of a natural insect repellent found in certain chrysanthemum plants. The Insect Shield process binds a proprietary permethrin formula tightly to fabric fibers—resulting in effective insect protection that lasts the expected lifetime of apparel. Permethrin has been successfully used in the United States as an U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered product since 1977, with an excellent safety record. It is used in lice shampoos for children, flea dips for dogs, and various other products, some of which are regulated by the FDA.

Which insects does Insect Shield repel?
Insect Shield® Repellent Apparel has been registered to repel mosquitoes, ticks, ants, flies, chiggers, and midges (no-see-ums). Insect Shield® Repellent Gear has been registered to repel mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, and flies. The EPA requires extensive effectiveness data to prove a product's ability to repel insects. Many species and varieties of these insects have been tested, including those that can carry dangerous diseases.

Tested and Proven
Insect Shield technology results from years of intensive research and field study. Numerous studies have confirmed the effectiveness of permethrin-treated clothing as an insect repellent. Insect Shield’s own testing methods follow United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) guidelines, and the results conclusively show that our unique, long-lasting insect protection works.

Durable
The repellency of Insect Shield apparel is EPA-registered to last through 70 launderings—the expected lifetime of a garment. This is also well beyond the life of most performance finishes commonly used in the technical-apparel industry.

My Take on the Product I was provided a shirt to wear and I have to say that I was quite impressed. The shirt was lightweight and durable and I already wore it once into an are of the woods behind my own home that tends to get buggy and I was impressed to find that the bugs were notably less aggressive than they normally have been in the past, and I was wearing nothing else to keep them away besides this shirt. I liked the fact that they have so many different materials and items now that are protected by insect shield. Items for children and adults, they run the gamut.

I know for me I will be wearing this shirt a lot over the summer months, not only for its comfort, but also for its ability to keep me itch free.

Study finds that Insect Shield clothing substantially reduces tick bites for outdoor workers

A pilot study conducted by researchers at The University of North Carolina Gillings School of Global Public Health reported that the incidence of tick attachments was reduced by 93 percent among workers wearing Insect Shield Repellent Apparel. The report was published online March 11 in the journal Vector-Borne and Zoonotic Diseases.

Tick-borne diseases are a significant concern for the millions of people who work or play outdoors in tick- infested areas. If not treated early, these diseases can lead to severe illness or death. Over the past two decades, the incidence of Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever has increased. The UNC study sought to determine the effectiveness of Insect Shield-treated clothing for tick bite prevention among outdoor workers from the North Carolina Division of Water Quality (NCDWQ).

Sixteen employees from the Wetlands and Permitting Unit of the (NCDWQ) were selected for the pilot study because of the high number of work-related tick bites in previous years. Nine employees chose to wear Insect Shield clothing. Seven wore untreated clothes and continued their previous efforts to repel ticks including the use of spray repellents and other measures. The study, conducted from March through September, showed that the Insect Shield group experienced 99 percent fewer tick attachments during work hours and 93 percent fewer tick attachments overall.

On this basis, UNC-Chapel Hill and N.C. State University were awarded a four-year grant from The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to confirm the effectiveness of treated clothing in a rigorously controlled study.  More than 120 study subjects – employees from North Carolina Forestry, Parks and Recreation, and Wildlife divisions who primarily work outside, were randomly assigned to wear treated or untreated uniforms for two tick seasons. During this period, neither participants nor investigators know who is wearing which type of uniform.  All are being carefully monitored for tick bites and tick-borne illnesses.

Insect Shield is proud to partner with the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health on these important research projects,” said Richard Lane, president of Insect Shield. “We expect that the large study will corroborate the pilot study and further confirm that these treatments prevent serious tick-borne diseases like Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.”

Patent-pending Insect Shield technology provides long-lasting, effective and invisible protection against insects.  In addition to ticks, Insect Shield apparel products repel mosquitoes, ants, flies, chiggers, and midges (no-see-ums) through 70 launderings.

About Gillings School of Global Public Health, University of North Carolina:
Established in 1939, UNC’s public health school aims to improve public health, promote individual well-being, and eliminate health disparities across North Carolina and around the world. Exceptional teaching, ground-breaking research and dedicated service have resulted in the School’s being ranked the top public school of public health in the nation, and number two among all schools, public and private (U.S. News and World Report, 2012 edition.)

About Insect Shield Technology:
In July 2003, Insect Shield Repellent Apparel was registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Insect Shield® Repellent Apparel technology provides effective and invisible protection against mosquitoes, ticks, ants, flies, chiggers, and midges (no-see-ums) through 70 launderings. Book Review - Great Migrations: Butterflies

About the Book
The monarch butterfly, one of the most seemingly delicate of all of nature's animals, proves to be one of the toughest in this reader. Making the yearly trip from the Northern United States and Canada to the Oyamel forest of Mexico is no easy task, and it takes five generations of butterflies in order to do so. Battling cold temperatures and the threat of starvation, these beautiful insects complete an almost 3,000 mile journey over the course of two months, only to have to turn and around and head back home.

My Take on the Book
Is there anyone who does not enjoy watching butterflies? They perform their ballerina dances from plant to plant and definitely make our world a more beautiful place. These delicate creatures withstand many dangers in nature from animals , to weather, and even humans.
The Monarch Butterfly makes a long journey each year and this book, filled with detailed photographs and easy to read and understand text, will be one you and your child will enjoy.

Let me tell you a little about this butterfly's migration.

The Monarch Butterfly flies 2000 to 3000 miles each year from the United States and Canada to the forests of Mexico .

They winter in Mexico and when spring arrives they make the return flight. They travel totally by instinct.

A single butterfly cannot make the journey to Mexico. In fact it takes several generations of butterflies to fly that distance. The author uses a map to indicate the journey of each generation.

Laura Marsh used photographs to show the various dangers that the Monarch Butterfly will encounter. She illustrates the life cycle through photographs. The metamorphosis of this small insect will astound your child. I know it is still a wonder to me.

Ms. Marsh includes suggestions for you to use to help the Monarch Butterflies in your area. Why not plant a butterfly garden next spring? You will be rewarded by the lovely sight of the butterflies.

If you are interested in having this book as a part of your own library you can find it on Amazon!
