Book Review - Sun and the Star: A Nico di Angelo Adventure

Sun and the Star: A Nico di Angelo Adventure

About the Book
In Sun and the Star Demigods Nico di Angelo and Will Solace must endure the terrors of Tartarus to rescue an old friend in this thrilling adventure co-written by New York Times #1 best-selling author Rick Riordan and award-winning author Mark Oshiro.

Percy Jackson fans, rejoice! Nico and Will have a book of their own!

As the son of Hades, Nico di Angelo has been through so much, from the premature deaths of his mother and sister, to being outed against his will, to losing his friend Jason during the trials of Apollo. But there is a ray of sunshine in his life—literally: his boyfriend, Will Solace, the son of Apollo. Together the two demigods can overcome any obstacle or foe. At least, that's been the case so far...

Now Nico is being plagued by a voice calling out to him from Tartarus, the lowest part of the Underworld. He thinks he knows who it is: a reformed Titan named Bob whom Percy and Annabeth had to leave behind when they escaped Hades's realm. Nico's dreams and Rachel Dare's latest prophecy leave little doubt in Nico's mind that Bob is in some kind of trouble. Nico has to go on this quest, whether Mr. D and Chiron like it or not. And of course Will insists on coming with. But can a being made of light survive in the darkest part of the world? and what does the prophecy mean that Nico will have to "leave something of equal value behind?"

Nico will have to face demons both internal and external as his relationship with Will is tested to the core in this standalone adventure featuring two of the most popular characters in the Percy Jackson saga.

My Take on the Book

Rick Riordan's latest book continues to build upon the universe he's crafted over several series. The dynamic between Nico and Will in this book is a highlight, bringing fresh energy and representation to the series. Their relationship is well-crafted and offers both heartwarming moments and significant character growth. Longtime fans will appreciate the nods to previous books, with familiar faces making appearances and plotlines interweaving across the series.

However, the book is not without its flaws. Some readers might find the numerous dream sequences to be repetitive and detracting from the overall pace of the story. Despite these issues, the ending provides a satisfying conclusion with memorable quotes that resonate deeply.

For those who have journeyed through the Percy Jackson, Heroes of Olympus, and Trials of Apollo series, this book will likely be a fun read.

Book Review - Kill the Beast

Kill the Beast

About the Book
In Kill the Beast you get the eleventh book in the New York Times best-selling Villains series follows the downfall of Disney’s slickest, quickest, and smarmiest villain: Gaston.

He knew he was the best. He knew he was everyone's favorite guy.

You may think this tale as old as time has been told before.

You may know about the Beauty, and the Beast, and the curse they broke together. But some stories have more than one ending. Some stories have more than one villain.

Such is the story of Gaston. Growing up, young Gaston and the prince were brothers in all but blood. Their boyhood adventures led them throughout the many rooms of the castle, and into the deep woods beyond. The woods that were home to the legendary Beast of GĂ©vaudan, a terrifying creature whose presence loomed larger than life in their imaginations.

Then one fateful night, a violent tragedy changed their lives—and their friendship—forever, setting each of them down a very different path: the first, of greed and entitlement, the second, of determination to right the wrongs of the past.

The prince, as we know, paid a price for his wicked ways. And Gaston, fueled by the magic of three meddling witches, grew ever more haunted by a singular mission: to become the hero who killed the Beast.

My Take on the Book
I love these Villain books because they make you re-imagine the villains you have come to know and have a love/hate relationship with. This book does just that as it introduces you to the carefree boy who was friends with the Prince and becomes the beast. I love how this makes you see Gaston and the Prince in a new way, but also helps you to better understand how and why Gaston may feel the way that he does about the Beast. This is a strong story with good characterization. The book flows well together and is a book that is a ton of fun to read.

Book Review - Straight On Till Morning: A Twisted Tale Graphic Novel

Straight On Till Morning: A Twisted Tale Graphic Novel

About the Book
In Straight On Till Morning Disney's Peter Pan gets a twisted, graphic novel makeover in this reimagined YA story that asks, "What if Wendy first traveled to Never Land...with Captain Hook?"

Sixteen-year-old Wendy Darling’s life is not what she imagined it would be. After nearly meeting her hero, Peter Pan, four years earlier, she still holds on to his shadow—and the hope that his magical home truly exists.

So when the chance to travel to Never Land arises, Wendy makes a deal with Peter’s nemesis in exchange for passage. But the Never Land she discovers isn’t the wondrous place she imagined: Peter is nowhere to be found, and his pixie friend Tinker Bell refuses to speak to her.

Still, when Captain Hook reveals some evil and rather permanent plans for Never Land, it’s up to Wendy and Tink to save Peter Pan—and his world.

My Take on the Book
I love graphic novels and I love Disney and I have to say that this was an amazing book that really upended my thoughts as it came to the story of Peter Pan. The author and illustrator did an amazing job bringing this adaptation to life and really keeps you connected to the story from beginning to end. I found myself plowing through the story wanting to know how it would end up in the future. There were some definitely twists and turns, but in the end it is an amazing story with beautiful imagery and an even better story! If you love Disney and twisted tales, this graphic novel is for you!

Book Review - Thinking at the Speed of Bias

Thinking at the Speed of Bias

About the Book
In Thinking at the Speed of Bias respected DEI expert Sara Taylor presents a down-to-earth guide on how to tackle unconscious biases and foster true equity in our rapidly changing world. Through relatable examples and practical strategies, readers learn to deliberately slow down their thought processes and become aware of their filters in various situations. Taylor encourages readers to question their own assumptions by asking, "Do I know that what I'm thinking is actually true?" and "Why might I be reacting this way?"

The book demonstrates the importance of a clear set of competencies, skills, and strategies for addressing unconscious bias. By developing a culturally competent mindset and using a shared, holistic language to discuss these issues, readers gain the tools to understand, discuss, and implement change both at home and in the workplace. This approach avoids blame or shame, making it accessible and empowering for everyone.

The book's insights extend beyond individuals; it demonstrates how organizations can scale up cultural competence to transform their structures and systems. With a strong sense of hope, readers are empowered to make a difference, creating a more just and equitable world for all.

My Take on the Book
"Thinking at the Speed of Bias" by Sara Taylor is a transformative guide for individuals and organizations eager to address unconscious bias. Taylor's engaging style makes complex ideas accessible, allowing readers to understand and challenge their internal biases. The book emphasizes the importance of self-awareness and offers practical tools for promoting equity and inclusion.

Having examined my biases and actively worked toward equality for nearly a decade, I found Taylor's insights invaluable. Her focus on the need for personal responsibility rather than relying on marginalized groups for education is a powerful reminder of the ongoing effort required for genuine change. Taylor's detailed stages of filter shift development are particularly helpful for understanding the gradual nature of this journey.

While some chapters discuss influence on larger systems, which felt beyond my immediate impact, I realized the significance of my contributions within my community. My involvement in a church that recently became a Creation Justice Church and continues to grow in diversity highlights the importance of grassroots change. Spending time with diverse families at church and community events has enriched my understanding and commitment to equity.

Each chapter concludes with a Reflection and Action section, encouraging practical application of the concepts discussed. The inclusion of a Discussion Guide enhances the book's utility for group study, making it an excellent resource for both personal and collective growth. "Thinking at the Speed of Bias" is essential for anyone committed to fostering a more just and inclusive world.
