Book Review - Paul Meets Bernadette
About the Book
Paul is a fish who used to go around in circles. He made big circles and little circles. He circled from left to right and from right to left. He circled from top to bottom and from bottom to top. What else was there to do? Until one day Bernadette drops in and shows Paul that there is a whole world out there, right outside his bowl, with so many things to see. A banana-shaped boat! A blue elephant with a spoutlike trunk (be quiet when she’s feeding her babies)! A lovely lunetta butterfly, with tortoise-shell rims! Simple saturated paintings play off this charming ode to an active imagination — and the way that life changes when a bewitching creature opens your eyes.
My Take on the Book
Rosy Lamb has written a story about two fish who look at everyday objects from the fish's point of view. It is an interesting concept and one I had never thought of before.
Bernadette joins Paul in his fish bowl and begins to tell him about the things they can see outside the fish bowl. She tells him a banana is a boat and a teapot is an elephant.
As you look at the objects and listen to Bernadette it will give you a new perspective on everyday objects. There is a lot of imagination here by the author to deliver a story from a fish's point of view.
After reading the story it may be fun for you and your child to pretend to be fish and look at other everyday objects and imagine what a fish may think it is. You may be surprised at the responses your child and you create.

Book Review - Dinosaur Kisses
About the Book
For newly hatched dinosaur Dinah, the world is an exciting place. There is so much to see and do. She tries this — STOMP! And she tries that — CHOMP! Then she sees a kiss and knows just what she wants to try next. Who can she kiss? And after a few disastrous attempts, can she figure out how to give someone a kiss without whomping, chomping, or stomping them first? Young children will chuckle and cheer when Dinah finds just the right creature for her dinosaur kisses in this funny new picture book from David Ezra Stein.
My Take on the Book
Your young child, who may especially like dinosaurs, will enjoy this funny story using a dinosaur who just hatched from his egg. The dinosaur has a desire to kiss his friends but is not quite sure what a kiss is and this gets him into a little trouble.
However at the end of the story, he meets another baby dinosaur and they decide together to learn about kissing a friend.
This story will bring a smile and some laughter to your and your young child.

Book Review - Never Too Little to Love
About the Book
Tiny Too-Little loves someone who's very, very tall, and Tiny wants a kiss. What if he stands on his tiptoes on top of a thimble? What if he stands on his tiptoes on top of a matchbox on top of a thimble? Clever cut-away pages show Tiny's precarious pile growing higher and higher, while the object of his affection stays just out of reach. When the teetering stack finally falls with a crash, will his hopes be dashed? How can a tiny mouse get the kiss he needs?
My Take on the Book
Jeanne Willis and Jan Fearnley have written a perfect story for a young child. Children are tiny compared to adults. Do we ever think about the difficulty they encounter when they want to do something that requires height?
The little mouse shows determination and perseverance as it tries to find a way to give a kiss to his friend who is tall. As you read the story, you can feel yourself cheering for the little mouse to find the right things to give him the boost he needs to reach his goal.
Finally at the end of the story the mouse's friend realizes the little mouse cannot reach him and he bends down to meet him. You and your child will be delighted to see who the friend is and the challenge to reach him to give him a kiss. It is a sweet story to share with your young child.

The Buffalo Wing Turns 50! Time to #lickthebowlclean
2014 marks the 50th Anniversary of the Buffalo Wing – a momentous occasion sure to be celebrated by sports fans and foodies alike. First created in Buffalo, NY in 1964, the original recipe was as simple as combining Frank’s® RedHot® sauce and melted butter. As the history books tell it, wings were seen as a culinary cast-off at the time and Buffalo wing sauce was created in a pinch to stave off the hunger of some late night revelers stopping by a neighborhood tavern. But fifty years later, this secret sauce still exhibits a flavor profile that continues to take the country by storm. It’s one for the history books: the lowly Buffalo Wing catapulted from basic pub grub to menu mainstay, all across America.

So celebrate the Big Game and the anniversary of wings with Frank’s RedHot. Some things may have changed over fifty years, but one thing that hasn’t: the secret to authentic Buffalo flavor can only be achieved with Frank’s RedHot, THE secret ingredient in the original Buffalo wing sauce recipe.
While you’re prepping for the party, don’t forget that Frank’s RedHot is the also the perfect complement to all your game day favorites. So bring it on and pour it on! From wings and chili to burgers and nachos, Frank’s® RedHot® is the “must-have” for any legendary party!

Not only are they offering flavors like Passion Mix and HOT TAMALES® Hottie you get into the mood for the day, but I also found a few recipes that use just these same candies to make some very cool cookies as well:
BeJeweled MIKE AND IKE® Cookies
BeJeweled Mike & Ike Sugar Cookies
Prep Time: 15 min
Cook Time: 10 min
Ready Time: 25 min
Servings: 36
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 ½ Boxes of MIKE AND IKE® Passion Mix
- 2/3 Cup margarine – cold
- 1 Cup Sugar
- 1 Egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 2 Cups flour
- 1 teaspoon Baking Soda
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees F.
- In a mixer bowl, put 2/3 C Margarine, 1 C Sugar, 1 Egg and 1 teaspoon Vanilla.
- Mix until well creamed.
- Add in 2 C flour and 1 teaspoon Baking Soda.
- Add in chopped up MIKE AND IKE® Passion Mix, mix into a dough (will be slightly sticky).
- Roll into 1 inch balls. Place on cookie sheets lined with baking paper.
- Bake for about 10 minutes or until edges are golden. Centers will be slightly soft.
- Let cool.
HOT TAMALES® Snickerdoodles
Servings: 2 dozen
INGREDIENTS:
- 1/2 cup (4 oz) HOT TAMALES® Candies, coarsely chopped*
- 1/4 cup (2 oz) salted margarine, softened
- 1/4 cup (2 oz) shortening (I use Spectrum Organic)
- 3/4 cups (5.6 oz) granulated sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 1/2 cups (6.75 oz) all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- pinch of salt (increase to 1/4 tsp if using unsalted margarine)
- 4 teaspoons granulated sugar
- 4 teaspoons ground cinnamon
*The candy is quite sticky so the best way to chop it is with a lightly oiled knife.
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Line two cookie sheets with parchment paper and set aside.
- Using an electric mixer, cream together the margarine, shortening and ¾ cups sugar. Add the egg and beat until thoroughly combined.
- In a separate bowl, combine all dry ingredients. Add the dry ingredients (except the candy) into the creamed mixture and mix until just combined. Add the chopped candy and mix until the candy is evenly distributed, a few minutes more.
- Refrigerate the dough for at least 15 minutes (this makes it easier to handle).
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
- Combine the remaining sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl. Form dough into balls the size of small walnuts (I use a tablespoon cookie scoop). Roll the balls of cookie dough in the cinnamon sugar.
- Place the cookies two inches apart on the cookie sheets. Bake for 8 minutes, rotating the cookie sheets in the oven at the halfway point. They are done when they look puffed in the middle and slightly brown at the edges (the tops of the cookies will form cracks). Be careful not to overcook.
- Remove cookie sheet from the oven and let cookies sit on it for another minute or so before removing to cooling rack; cookies will flatten out as they cool.
- These cookies are best served warm, straight out of the oven, but they can be stored in an airtight container for up to two days.

My Take on the Products
I was given the opportunity to try a few of these products as I got ready for the BIG game this weekend. I have to say is that I was very impressed with the flavor that the two products that were sent to me had. I tried the shrimp sauce as well as chutney. Both had very unique flavors and tasted amazing on the items that I use them with. In looking at the website for the company I found a number of other products that I would love to try in the future. Their pickeled relish, though not something I tried specifically looks amazing and it is one that I will be on the lookout for. All-in-all you can really some class to the items that you will have for your guests at the BIG game by using these products, and I think that you too will be pleasantly surprised at the flavor and at the reactions to the product. Try it out and see for yourself!

My Take on the Book
I am going to New Orleans tomorrow and being on the bayou I have been thinking about gators (though I don't know how prevalent they are there). Anyway, this book gave me some great ideas for how to survive encounters with some pretty dangerous creatures. I loved how this book was organized and how the author keeps the information light while still sharing important information as well. While you might be a wimp when it comes to these creatures, you will learn valuable insights from this book, though hopefully you will never have to use it personally!

Book Review - World Food Cafe Vegetarian Bible

Chris and Carolyn Caldicott are the Godparents of global vegetarian cuisine in the United Kingdom. For twenty years their World Food Cafe in London's Covent Garden was the hub of new flavors, colors and combinations in vegetarian cooking. They took long sabbaticals to travel the world and collect new recipes from every corner of the globe.
The new book World Food Cafe Vegetarian Bible, collects the best recipes from two decades of globetrotting, tried and tested to be easy to make at home.
More than 200 vegetarian recipes fill the pages of this new book including:
- Zanzibar Beans in Coconut Sauce
- East African Wilderness Sweet Potato Patties
- Kenyan Curry with Okra and Peas, Topped with a Fried Egg
- Banana and Chili Fritter with Passion Fruit Dip
- Chana in a Thick Spicy Gravy
- Deep Red Rajasthani Vegetables in s Poppy-Seed Sauce
- Borneo Rainforest Vegetables
- Balinese Gado Gado
- Oaxacan Mole
- Caribbean Vegetables in a Mustard, Coconut and Rum Sauce
- Caribbean Pepperpot
- Pistachio Kulfi
- Guatemalan Flan
- Mango and Passionfruit Cheesecake
World Food Cafe Vegetarian Bible gathers together recipes that have bee published in the Caldicott’s previous books: World Food Cafe, World Food Cafe 2 and The Spice Routes. It forms the perfect companion to the brand new collection World Food Cafe Quick and Easy, published September 2012.
About the Authors
Chris Caldicott is a journalist and photographer. With his wife Carolyn Caldicott he owned and ran the World Food Cafe in London's Covent Garden, where they cooked and served delicious vegetarian food from recipes collected on their travels. He and Carolyn are co-authors of three Frances Lincoln vegetarian cookery books and his photographs also appear in a wide range of newspapers and magazines. Since 1991 Chris has been an official photographer for the Royal Geographical Society. Chris and Carolyn live in Winchester in the U.K.
My Take on the Book
The book definitely includes recipes from around the world. Reading the introduction to this book gave me the background information on the authors and their travels which included gathering recipes from sources in the countries they visited. The authors used their travels to Africa, Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Southeast Asia, French Polynesia, South and Central America , and the Caribbean to photograph and gather the facts for this book.
Each section included beautiful photographs depicting the food, landscape, buildings, people, and art of the country. The authors wrote pages about the country and origins concerning the foods the people eat and ingredients used in their cooking.
Some of the recipes can be easily duplicated with ingredients that are available in the United States. However many of the recipes would be more challenging to use. If there was a substitution ingredient the authors often included that next to the original ingredient.
The book certainly expanded my knowledge of foods eaten around the world. I feel this particular vegetarian cookbook would probably be best used by someone who had access to the ingredients available from these diverse countries.

This is not to say that everything will be easy, but the resources and tips provided give you the stepping stones to follow as you start down this journey. This is definitely a book I recommend that you read as a couple as it will open up many great conversations between you and your partner. All-in-all this was a great book and one that all couples should read!
